These are all add ons. Nothing here is factory. We all got hose clamps .etc ......it was the 70's. I've seen a new unit or two lately. The SD-508 is really close in size and looks to have the fitting in the exact same place. I have the same set up and am always thinking I'm going to get this system up and running again someday. But I actually use the car more in the winter.

Nice to see you taking this well. To me , and probably at least a handful more , you're better off just yanking the engine and swapping in the one you're looking for. OK you knew that , but just to offer a verifying opinion.....time equals $. First , you don't mention which year it is. There are 2 types of EA71's out there and we want to do this right the first time, Check that your intake and air passage tubes are the same to the unit you'll be buying. Hopefully you can score a whole unit with intake and all inplace. "tailgatewagon" - Brian , has some 1600 stuff of mine/ours that you might be able to use. He's in Bozeman - not sure if that helps. Otherwise there has to be one fairly close to you. You couldn't be in a better area for these cars. Now what to do about images of Liberace in a sparkly bass boat .....arrrrrrggggghhh!

Daytrip. One will show up within a few hundred miles. Good luck. And expect to need a seal (gasket). Most can't find the key for the lock too. ;( but you can score a core key and new core I've heard. -

Yes , I crated and shipped a canopy. Went from Milford CT to Colorado for a young lady , paid for by the old man. The shipping was like $540 or so !! But they just couldn't find one local and it was important enough. I spent too much time on it but made it happen. I was in an industrial park so my neighbors loaded it onto the freight truck and it was there puppy to deal with. All went well , I packed it well. They even sent me a pic of the gal with her prize rig. Good luck ! -
I'm not going to tackle those questions but I will say this about storage. IF you simply do not have indoor storage like myself , just make SURE you do NOT park it over dirt or even gravel etc. Please DO make sure you park it over pavement where water sheds and runs and there's much less condensation. Keep the exhaust fairly dry too by running it and not letting it sit more than a couple of days without running it.

Welcome to the "family". It's contageous for sure. I'd like to suggest you take it down to the Pine Barrens and do a little trail riding. You can gently go through the trails and not beat the crap out of it yet truely enjoy the permissions granted by a Subaru that most others won't handle. It's just off road exercise. You'll get a feel for what your vehicle can do if needed. Don't keep it too clean ! LOL We'll be rocking the Barrens sometime soon. If you see a post here and would like to join up you can always leave your 'rester in the lot and take a passenger seat with one of us so you can see the conditions. Take a look at my '78 and maybe see your 'rester's future. Enjoy !! -
Doug those are somewhat rare heads in that they are 1400 but they are "dry sleeve" engines. They were made for the automatics and 4WD cars and sold here in the USA until '76 or '77. Pretty much 1975-77 model years. chickaskia - does your 1400 have two exhaust ports at the bottom of the heads or does it have 4 ports from the ends of the heads? Big difference and one does not work with the other. also chick. you can find all you need. We have good used and somewhere I have at least one new 1400 head - old style four port - and guys like ctsuba have more - engines , heads , etc ......

The cowl itself is not the problem but under the cowl. Take it out and if you don't mind take the dashboard out too. From inside you can usually see some daylight where the pinholes are. Ususally on the passenger side but sounds like maybe you've got both sides because water isn't going to jump over the tranny hump. PRP may also have a windshield gasket in stock should you need one. Heater cores are the same as a Dodge Colt , so when you search try both. Also get the spigot or cock as its called. That opens and closes when you change the temp from blue (cool) to red (heat) with the slider lever on the panel. REally smart to just take the dash out and go through the whole deal. Leaks from the top , windshield gasket , heater core and spigot , clean the ducts out and I'm pretty sure you're going to find some nesting materials in there too. It's really not a big deal although so many people don't want to get involved with it all. Expose it all and think like water. Follow along from the outside where you can see where water will work its way in. Especially if there was a build up of pine needles , dirt , leaves ,etc.... Get any of that crap out and look close where it was. I'll bet lunch there'll be pinholes there if the owner never thought to get in and clean it out properly. Enjoy !!!

Shop with "dannybreadman" on eBay first. He's here as "drivesubies". If he comes up short on anything there's currently a couple other sellers with new old stock for your car. After that there's a wealth of used parts from folks like myself , Subaru3 , Subafreak , ctsuba , and more ..... You can do better and get Subaru parts not Vera , etc......crap. I'm thinking you're going to enjoy the whole process. You're lucky that there's still parts out there and we're all fairly reasonable on prices. One guy on eBay recently has some NOS and I think he's here too , but he apparently hasn't researched much and is asking a bit much on his items. That's why you should shop with Danny first. Gen 1 Wagon Heater Issues...

Yeah, the white plastic lever whatever you want to call it. That's my guess. The flapper door is not closing to redirect the heat. Toes warm is a great sign. And chances are there's a mouse nest in there if the vehicle sat around more than normal. Might want to install a flush adapter on the heater return hose then back flush it. Check your heater core for leaks or bad corrosion (about to leak). Those are the same as a Dodge Colt so when your search yields zip for Subaru 72-79 cars you can try the Mopar way of life. -

Gen 1 wagon wheel bearing and carb questions

Or just get the accelerator pump for starters and see if that helps the hesitation. You only need to lift the top plate of the carb. off to do it (float chamber). Easy , cheap enough. You could score a whole carb. kit off eBay for like $24 or so ,just saw one , and the accelerator pump will be in there. Also a factory service manual - same deal on eBay for like $15 or so. You can use any of 1977 blue cover thru 1979 model year. It's all right about the same. Wheel bearings aren't hard but know not to set the new one in by striking the inner ring. Always best to send it in with a press and proper install tool BUT - Most of us have "walked" it in being very careful not to hit any area of the OUTER RING in too much at a time. Sorry if you know what you are doing already. I'm assuming you've not done one before. What this means is only hit the outer ring on the bearing and do not hit the inner ring. Line it up flush and use something that fits the outer ring if you can't score the correct tool. Plenty of way to accomplish this. Back to the hesitation - check all vacuum lines too. Some may be cracking and allowing a loss of pressure etc. We'll be there for ya ....that's what we do here. Enjoy !!! -
What you do is your biz but you can do all you mentioned and it's still an old Subaru that won't beat much of anything from the stoplight. Your greatest satisfaction will be when a few years from now you've grown with the car some and you'll see it as an accomplishment just having saved it. Gas isn't getting cheaper. You've got a good sipper there. Why make it guzzle only to be blown off by an 80's Honda with primered fenders?

Did you know he's selling 360 parts on eBay? ...... Danny, Sorry Andrew didn't get the manual to you in time. I see he copied me and sent it to me as well. Between his and the rest I'm guessing you're covered for now. Had a lot going on last 48 hours but all settled. I'll be talking to you soon. What you might want to do is carefully undo the fuel lines and drop the tank. If you live where you get frost and want the tank to last another 20+ years then you might want to do this once and pay a little more. Have it sealed and lined - good for three decades and then some if you clean the area well and garage the car or park it protected and NOT OVER DIRT. See that rust you mentioned? It'll turn really bad really fast if you park it over soil or where it can't drain and dry properly. Good luck with it ! -

Wow , that's a real 43K car !!! Take extremely good care of the decal on the driver's door. Use water only to clean it and don't even look at it the wrong way. That , and the pedals and carpet are a dead give away you've got a true low mileage car. If that turned over I'd be thinking the original owner was a meticulous one. Yes , the body will suffer if left to sit outside , especially over dirt. But yours looks like an extremely nice base to work with. You've done well ! Start with Danny W in TN - goes by "drivesubies" here and on eBay as "dannybreadman". He has a lot of new old stock. If I can get him to get parts out "ctsuba" Charlie has some of his and my old 70's parts including some solid exhaust. Wheels we have. Tires are 155/80 R13 and are tough to find but not impossible. Also fit toyota Tercel among a few others. If you shop with guys like Danny and other board members you can probably have that car in great running shape and able to get through inspection for under $3K , maybe lots less. Price isn't bad but of course we'd all work on it a little. See what you can do. Good luck !!
