  1. Not worth the labor charge to replace those unibody supports and firewall , floor , rockers , wheel aprons ..... Many of us here on the right coast bucked and whined but finally broke down and paid for shippnig for a car from the west. Worth it! We got lucky here and found one ('78) that was Zeibart rustproofed properly - meaning it didn't hold water - and another from the west that a previous owner brought east. That's my '87 turbo wagon , currently offered along with my '78 or my '92 Legacy if you're interested. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=115632 Here's my gallery: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/album.php?albumid=11 Sorry , I know you want to hear that you can fix it but unless its TRUELY minimal .... its terminal. :-\ We've logged hundreds of thousands of miles on those GL-DL/Loyales and have had trailing arms rot to the point of the wheel folding , and rear struts pop thru the top mount area of the wheel arch , on top of catching road spray and dirt in the holes of the rear corners , fender tails disappearing , bumpers sagging on one side , the list goes on..
  2. From a Subaru GL wagon , something like an '89 ...had D/R 5spd. The guy at work I know has a flatbed and he's been bringing cars on the back of his rig to work. Gets out at 6AM and hits the yard ,makes his $$$ ... so here he is the other night with this rotted to death (underside) GL D/R wagon - well those wheels caught my eye. Wish I took the Before picture.
  3. Yeah, I hear ya , but I've got so many of these stinkin alloys in 13" My though was , I guess , to be a hotshot mo fo with my bad alloys in the corrosive spew and knowing I've got an even sweeter set with summer tires. Big ego inflator Ya know , when I got them they looked like crap from road salt, etc. but I could see they were not abused at all. Now that they're cleaning up so well I'm feeling a bit guilty ... but .... So I guess you don't want to hear that they'll be going on my mighty mighty non-EastCoast-like SUPER solid and almost rustfree '87 Turbo wagon which at this point is super rare in these parts. Plan is to enjoy what 4WD I can get while not using the '78 another winter , and plan on numerous full service car washes from November to April. What do you guys think about bright red in the recesses? Maybe red in the large holes and white in the small square holes???
  4. Scored a set of these ,cleaned 'em up ,painting the black recesses FLAT black, Q #1 - would you have gone for gloss black? I honestly grabbed the flat because it was there and I didn't look thinking it was gloss. Have you seem many of these? - I know I haven't. Know of any centercaps for these? I'll get the size but they look to be fairly common - around 2 1/4 inches maybe 2 3/8" Should I bother going for a clear coat if they're only going to be for winter? Paid $50 for the set. Had to work my drill with sanding disks (for a couple small gouges) and grinding/scrub pads for a good 2+ hours total....which is crazy since I really don't have this kind of time to screw with winter wheels .... obsessions .... Kind of just going at it and not really being too fussy. I'll get some pics soon. Anyone who does have centercap in any working condition I'd buy some. I'm going to take well used caps and dress them up.
  5. So you parked on your door ....again!
  6. Welcome. Saw that Brat , what's the sellers name ? "hyrdagirl ?? something or other? ...hmmmmm Good luck with this one. I was kind of watching it for awile too. Take your time! Cheers!
  7. yup ,starting here in the US in like 1972 ..or '73 ?? with the Coupe only. If you can find an FE model fivespeed you'll save some gas. 1978-9 FE Man , I've got to get back to the Vintage Fall Fest at Lime Rock one of these years..... :-\ Did the car get lots of attention?
  8. whoa , does that mean you over this end of the state and didn't call me to come check it out??????? Hope to see it soon.
  9. Outstanding couple of days and a we did a good 70+ miles of trails. OK , go back to sleep now ...
  10. If you're interested in one of the last new windshield gaskets left you can contact me at moosens at yahoo. I also have a very nice low mile windshield but its here on the right coast. . "Drivesubies" has crated NEW stock of windshields ,the absoulte last of their kind. If you really want to do it right snag one from him. Otherwise a good used and of course get one of those new gaskets from me and you'll be all set for a long time.
  11. No sweat, I'll be happy enough doing light duty and netting creatures with the kid. I might go look at that 45K Loyale wagon on C'list in Penssauken ... or something like that. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=115439at.
  12. All depends on if we go to the races at NJMP. AMA Superbike and other road racing motorcycle classes - SuperStock , SuperSport , and wheateverthehell else they have these days. If we go we'll be in FWD - that's right. Pine Barrens , Wharton State Forest. We'll likely head down Friday afternoon and camp in the woods unless it looks like hurricane weather ,etc.. Talk to me if you think you might make it. Fred , I swear this time I won't blow you off. It'll be all about hitting the woods and my son can deal with not catching reptile and stuff for a little bit. Cheers!
  13. There's no matching left mirror for the type on the Brat in this picture -post #1. The set I took home with me is for the '79 ,like I said ,they didn't start dual mirrors untill '79 so they are not the same style. All that said I have here at home a new set of 1979 side view mirrors. PM and we'll talk soon.
  14. Noooooobody went to this ??? Please , please , please don't make me go over to the NAUSIAC site to hear about it.... please....
  15. Terrible , just 13. Only good news was Ben Spies' performance.
  16. American Ben Spies takes the pole position !!!!!! Hayden also on the front row !!! 3PM Eastern time - you know where I'll be - watching SPEED TV Greatest road racing action anywhere and look how few people appreciate it. Turkeys!
  17. Best to use an engine crane. No friend's with one around? I picked mine up on sale at like PoopBoys for $119. Saw them even lower than that once on Sale for $89 !!! Jacking will do but you'll need a couple of blocks of wood under the heads to rest it back down on and I really can't verify that you'll get the oil pan off and out that way since I've always picked the engine right out and worked on it that way. Yes ,one nut removed from each side. Mounts stay attatched and lift up. If you don't have the $ for the engine crane , one guy on each side and you lift it right out. But you'll be needing to jack the tranny slightly along with a second jack. Cheap way - use one jack under the pan with wood so you don't hurt the pan. Second jack under tranny to support it when you go to seperate the engine from tranny. 4 nuts on flywheel , leave the intake on just disconnect the fuel line and throttle cable. REmove the radiator first , it gives you more room. And always disconnect the battery -first. When its time to part the two use a putty knife ,then thin flathead screwdirver. There's dowel pins that often like to stick. They should stay inserted into either side ,usually the engine side. Go at it,you'll do fine and anything not mentioned will become obvious and easy enough to deal with. Keep that tranny at the height required to seperate the two which is when the motor mounts clear the bracket by about an inch. When you put them back together have that buddy again and carefully align the shaft of the tranny without stressing weight on it. A little jostling sometimes but the dowels will eventually align and you push the engine back onto the tranny ,throw at least a couple of the nuts back on and get them closed up to each other before resting the engine and tranny back down into the brackets while guiding the motor mount stud in....we've all done it ,you'll be fine. Good luck.
  18. OK that was a little crude , but you laughed Edited out of kindness... ..not because they told me to. WTF ? that few two wheel people here??????
  19. http://rally-america.com/rallycross.php Geez ,where have I been? Thanks to my son for telling me about **** EUROPEAN STYLE R/X ***** Travis Pastrana and the gang coming. NJMP in Milleville ,NJ We MIGHT go but really can't be sure. Sunday is the main event day. Might try to make it. There'll be 3 events here on our coast and 3 on "their coast". For you east coast folks the later dates are in Oct. and Nov. No time to add links now - use Google. Cheers! ....I'm doing my joker lap right now
  20. Valve covers - which are actually rocker covers (don't worry I say Valve too) they're a piece of cake - a few minutes each with the exception of possible having to scrape the old ones out a bit. Oil pan count on a good half hour AFTER you've spent the time lifting ,etc. Plenty of gaskets out there. Good luck. Oh , do the oil pump too ... And inspect the head gaskets for leakage too. When they sit a LONG time they can soak thru.
  21. no bulge - 1600 The other one has to be 1800. Measure them flanges across? 1800 will be a little wider. Bad week for money but I wouldn't let that 1600 pipe go for any less than $100 ..... maybe if you eBay it start there and let it roll. Might fetch a solid $200 if the right owner shows up. Good luck.
