Congrats,Connie! Have lots of stuff left at Charlies. If you truely intend on keeping this for a long stretch you'd be mighty smart to hit up Charlie's stash. I also have a beautiful trunk rack too incase that one isn't to your liking. Tommy can have some of my mahogany if he doesn't have any handy. Nice fresh wood on those rack slats would make it like new.Couple of cuts and some PL Premium,better than new.

Why now in the middle of winter,are all these vintage Subarus popping up??????

take the sedan engine,remove intake and egr piping from exh. sideports,plug egr holes in carb'd heads with thin stock,no biggie-two 10mm bolts each side-easy-done-drop intake on with fresh gaskets,finish the job and you have an SPFI formerly carb'd engine.Will run fine,ours did.Be smart to maybe save and/or transfer certain harnesses but its a real drop 'n go deal. Have fun! Wagons,yes. just edited....if you haven't done this kind of work before it's easy.Just put your SPFI intake up on the spare tire deck with everythnig still hooked up.A/C and P/S can just be unbolted and moved off to the sides without losing any fluid,freon...let us know if you need more details.

Hey there! HAPPY FREAKIN' NEW YEAR !! #1 Pine Barrens Trail run anybody?? We ain't seen the Barrens since a quick dash through in the dark in May coming back from Carlisle with the '78 and '79.....jonesin' bigtime! For those yet unfamiliar with the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey its mostly sandy trails,nothing too crazy. Some water,take it or leave it. No pressure to be a hero or retard. It'll be a winter run so it should be a little more slick than usual. If interested and want more info just ask. Kick it around and we'll see where we settle as a group. The more nasty it is,the more I'd prefer to have several vehicles and probably a non Subaru or two might come along. February? March? Something before Carlisle,which is the third weekend in May every year. #2 The Ice Carnival and/or Ice Races in upstate NY. I'm sure Mike Kamm will post. This year I should actually be able to make it there with new tires on my '78 4WD wagon. Tires are on! Nothing fancy,but at least I have something acceptable. The Carlisle Import/Kit and Repli-Car show in May is a National event. You do NOT have to have a show car,just anything that's roadworthy and Subaru for our group.Or bring your other specialty car and meet up at our tent. This year I should be going down there on Friday. Sure would like to help out more this year. I'll be happy to cover the tent up front if need be. This year has seen a few folks shed their old cars for newer ones. But some of us have added more older cars. Should equal out to a good show with a healthy mix of Subarus from the 60's through the latest models. Will my '78 be restored by then?? Hope we can all make it there in May. Rumor has it that Todd "Subaru3" is going to make Carlisle from Texas with his sweeeeeeeeet '79 GF.

Updateski ! Talked to the guy on Friday. Car is looking extremely good,he says. I'm totally looking forward to seeing just how nice this car is as he describes it as 89k -certainly looking original - VERY clean,showing no rust,crisp lines,etc.... He never really took much time to look it over other than snapping some distant shots for Craigslist when I snatched it up. OK,so this is history,not an update but here's where I'm at now. He had the starter rebuilt for only $35 and before sundown came he saw that the f/p was pumping fuel. Had also tossed in a new battery for me. So that means it'll at least creep with 2nd gear and the starter only.But he seems to think it'll start and run pelnty good enough to drive onto a trailer,etc. He got this car in a lot deal/estate type thing. He was told the engine had a knock but never really ran it much. His thoughts from his recent views of the car are that it sure looks to be ready to drive. I was suppsed to call him on Saturday but had to get caught up on sleep in a major way. So hopefully I'll call him later today and he'll have good news. OK,I know it's a long shot at but I just want to again see at this time who's available and for what sort of situation. If there's another "NorthWet" - Pat P. who'll tow dolley my little puppy to me I'll pay as good as I did with Pat or a little better since gas is now double what it was then. Grab it and tuck it away from the elements for me? I'll pay for that too. But keep in mind I still have to pay the big transport chunk come spring so I don't want to pay too much for the winter holding. But I'd hate to see someone like Shawn make a long run like that. I'll only have to cover him that mich more for gas. At a certain point you're better off paying now for the transport Co. to grab it. So again,within reason,if someone can conveniently help out that's great. But I don't want you guys trekking over snowy mountain ranges for hundreds of miles for this....please. So,run by me what can be done and we'll weigh it all out against calling the transport co and getting my Christmas present in February. Thanks for any help and please don't anyone feel obligated,etc......it's the winter season,travel gets hairy,etc.etc. and it's just a little old car. Cheers !

The 1300 and 1600 should NEVER be wasted. Log splitter,toothpick maker,whatever....but melting them down is a crying shame.

Oh,now I see what the heck you were talking about in that PM "Gimme shock treatment" .... I love it ! Here's my issue with the new stock. The top rearward corner of the front doors. They come to a square corner and factory seals have a nice molded corner to fit. Given that I'm going for as close to 100% as possible with my '78 wagon and '73 Coupe I'm going to try to use some of what Charlie D has laying around firstly. Most likely I'm going to buy at least one cars worth of seals from this new stock for the '79 that I'll probably just abuse for a few years untill it splits in half.:-\ Also,while at Charlie's I started chopping pieces of various seals and gaskets. Hopefully I can shop around and get some really excellent matches.

hmmmm,let me check. Meanwhile he hasn't called back about trying to start it again and see if it'll run somewhat. Can always use 2nd gear with the starter to get it loaded. Thanks guys! I'll buy a freakin tow bar,that's plenty easy enough swing. Man,I know I should fly out and haul it back but there's such little spare time around here lately. I'll post new info as fast as I can.

Mike, I'm holding off for the moment because there's a ton of decent weatherstripping from 1971 through 1979 at my friend's place.

Car in Cour d' Alene,needs to get to CT or near NYC drop off. 1974 DL four door , ran when parked in the springtime but has a knock. Manual shift so it can be 2nd gear/starter engaged moved somewhat with a healthy battery,if needed. Currently sitting covered with snow. Car either needs to be transported or stored kind of soon. The owner has a really nice tow dolley for $900 so if there's someone willing to do it I'd cover the dolley and pay gas up front to have that car and dolley brought here. Or,you buy the dolley if it pleases you. I'll even donate $100 towards it for you , and gas $ of course. Or,storage untill I can get regular transport for it. I'd rather not have to buy a tow dolley right now,but if it works all around I'll do it and turn it over or tuck it away. Guy like me can get himself in serious trouble with one of those things hanging around.:-\ 1974 is really in great shape as far as the body goes. Bumpers look crisp and clean. Would rather see if here in great shape than dinged up,salted to death from coming across the top of the USA in wintertime,like my '73 did. All respect to Pat and his effort that escapes words but if there's an option to store it SAFELY untill spring I'd be all for that. Transport can be arranged fairly quickly. One guy was just by at that same location on Wed. and offered to take it on his next run,probably in 2-3 weeks. If that's the case I probably don't need any help. But I haven't locked that down yet. Wow,really nice base to start from!! That rear bumper....I most copy it!! Or find one,but that's unlikely. Not many of those left. Enjoy,and yes,there's more parts out there than you'd think for this car. But of course,some items are scarce. No problem for brake/tune-up parts,etc.

No sweat,headgaskets show up all the time on eBay. No longer stocked by Subaru of America,but some are still floating around. Most dealers know nothing about this car. That's where this cool little community comes in. Enjoy!

Same here. But if you lift the hood there should be a sticker with the info on it. Also,engine has a raised lettering "EA71" up by the distributor. If its not an EA71 1600 then someone did a swap with an '81. If the starter is located at dead center top of the bellhousing it's the EA71 or first edition of the EA81 1800 which was a one year deal,pretty much,with the top starter. After that the EA81 has the starter located on the upper driver's side of the bellhousing. Enjoy!
