DEFINATLEY know what you mean!

It Depends. How much work DOES it need? Another question to ask is how much is it worth to you. I'm going through the same thing with my wagon right now. I need almost $600 to fix it and I only paid $800. The things I need to fix arent that bad, but they just add up. In the end, It's your call. You keep asking here, someone probably give you a low ball offer to "take it off your hands". good luck,

Buying a new car, some Q's
theDirtyRue replied to theDirtyRue's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks, I was planning on loading up the questions. I bought my car on instinct, and as I know now, thats bad. I bought it at auction, so I had little time to look at it all, plus my mechanical skills were nonexistant! Thanks again, -
Just got a free 86 GL-10 Wagon!
theDirtyRue replied to SubaruRichie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry abaout the "kid" thing, guess I meant "guy". Well anyway, good luck with the cars, hope you get at least ONE good runner out of both of them! Good luck, -
Okay, Tommorow I am going to look at three wagons to possibly replace mine. I have a good idea of what problems to look for, but I thought I'd ask you guys too, maybe I'm forgetting something so I guess it never hurts to ask. I know to look at the boots for tears, look for leaks and where they are coming from, Listen for brake problems, Check the clutch, listen for the infamous "tick", Make sure it shifts well into all gears and 4x4, check the oil for coolant and the coolant for oil (how can I tell if there is coolant in the oil and vise versa?). Well, I know I am forgetting some things, so any help is much appreciated. thanks again,

Be careful drawing things into the mud on your car! Two reasons: 1. It invites other people to leave you "messages" in the mud And 2. It scratches the paint. Even the "messages"! I absolutely cover me car with mud when I go, and one time I took it to the friday night races. Before I went, I wiped off the mud on my car so it had the number 35 on both doors and on the hood along with "THE DIRTY RUE". Lets just say my car is now permantley known as THE DIRTY RUE!

Wow this kid is getting lucky! I wish people would just offer me subrus at random. I also wish I had a place to keep them all! Good luck with getting at least one to run! -
Welcome. You'll probably want to do an engine swap, swapping your EA series motor with an EJ series. Do a search for motor swaps or EA to EJ and just read up. There are a couple of threads that talk about what kind of power gains that are to be expected with the different modifications. *EDIT* Also, I'd edit the name of this thread. Change it to something a little more specific. That will get your thread looked at by the people who know the answers. Good luck,

The 3AT tranny isnt the most impressive thing that Subaru put in their cars. They usually go out around 120K if I remember right. The Turbo's rarely have problems, If anything they can cause problems with the cooling system. Try to feel all the coolant hoses for weakness and such. I've only had manual transmissions so I don't know too much about the auto ones. Someone should clarify for you though. Good luck,

I must agree here. This movie is one of the funniest movies you and your family will see!

Did anyone here breakdown on hwy21 in Idaho??
theDirtyRue replied to hush777's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It wasnt me (could have been, with all the problems lately...), But I was just wondering where in Idaho you are... Thanks, -
A leak I can't seem to find!?!?
theDirtyRue replied to theDirtyRue's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the Ideas. I still havent had time to tear inot it a little to find the leak. Tommorow will probably be the day. It's hard to tear it down, find the problem, fix it/replace it, and put it all back together before I have to get ready for work. Tommorow is my first day off in almost 2 weeks. I'm hoping that it is just a hose. The water pump is a lot more expensive! Thanks for all the Ideas. -
I'm moving over to Gig Harbor in about a month (heading to college). I'd be up for it if you hadn't done it yet and if I have time. Just need a date...

Okay, It started leaking coolant two days ago. Before that it was boiling and filling up the overflow tank. My gauge said that it wasnt getting above 1/2 though. I recently replaced the T-stat. I determined that it was boiling b/c i didnt have a good enough coolant to water mix (more water than coolant). I drained some of the coolant and refilled with straight coolant. Anyway, now it's leaking. I can't seem to find where its coming from, but I can see the coolant and smell it burning (It's leaking onto the down pipe and burning off). I can only follow it to the small shield over the oil pump. Does anyone have an idea of where it's leaking? My guess is the water pump... thanks in advance,

Sounds like we are about to see one bad rump roast subaru forming! I don't know what happened but I can bet that almost all of us have experienced a similar moment... Good luck,

XT6 clutch/pressure plate....who was it?
theDirtyRue replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
WJM, Whered you get the clutch kit for your RX and how much was it? Replacing my very soon and just wondering... Thanks, -
I'll have to agree with GD, but only in part. In the city I don't get that good of mileage with my 87 turbo, but on the highway I can get close to 30. How much of the trip will be highway miles? Figure that out and then determine from there. Just my 02 cents i guess! Kyle

Last summer, I was driving to a friends house before heading to spokane( 30 miles) when a coolant hose burst...Big time. I was about two miles from home. I limped it to my friends house and left it thouhere for the night( you can still see my trail of coolant leading to his house:D ). At the time we had no idea what had happened. When i came back the next day, i poured some water into it and heard it running right back out. Kept pouring until i pinpointed the noise, felt around and found a considerably large hole in the hose. The whole bottom half had literally blown out. It was the second time this had happened. The first i didn't loose as much coolant for some reason. Anyway, I limped the car home after i filled the radiator to the brim along with the overflow tank. I was out of coolant within a 1/2 mile and just kept on goin. I ended up goin about two miles with next to no coolant. I replaced the hose and havent had any problems yet.

Pictures from CV axle replacement work.
theDirtyRue replied to MPVSubaru87's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'd LOVE a write up on this. My right side CV has been clicking since i bought the car(November '03, about 10,000 miles). I really want to fix it and stop hearing that noise. I've heard that it is a lot easier to replace the hole assembly though. I've thought about this and right now i have more than enough money to do so. Thanks again and looking forward to the write up! -
How to adjust clutch cable?
theDirtyRue replied to dave valiant's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Dave, first off, you have to disengage the release lever return spring. The spring is located on the drivers side right in front of the master cylinder. You can use a pair of needle nose pliers to get it off. Next you have to find the two nuts on the end of the cable at the release lever. its located under the spare tire. It will be easier if you take out the arm thing thats holds the tires heat shield. Back off the smaller nut (the first one, its a locking nut) and then turn the adjusting nut to bring release lever freeplay. The specs from my haynes manual say that the pedal play is 10-20 mm or .39in to .79 in. It's very simple. Shouldnt have any problems, unless I screwed up explaining it. Good luck, -
that does look pretty sharp. show us the pics when you get the front on! Nice work,
