Blown head gasket - further damage??
MilesFox replied to snoboy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i've towed cars with blown headgaskets you could try the block seal stuff if you follow the directions closely and use clean water. after a while the water pump wont like it, though -

top off with straight water. you ndont need to spend 8 bucks to dump lake eerie down the radiator every time you stop. and if you are getting coolant in the oil straigh water isnt as bad since coolant will eat bearings. if the radiator is bubbleing let the cap loose dont get too hot or wait to long to refill because a hot motor is impossible to fill. run the heat full blast and when theheat goes cold its time to top off, before the motor gets hot -

well since your oil is due for change run a can of sea foam in the oil or even some ATF (about 8 oz) the loosen all the gunk and then change the oil within that 300 miles a dirty filter will affect oil pressure, when my camper got so overdue for oil change the oil pressure was down by half at idle and a third at higway. i changed the oil and the pressure was better it idle than it cruising! wnen you treat the engine oil give the car a few higher rpms, at least 4500-5500 revs and hold it there for about 20 seconds or so -
Road trip reading, radio, waterpump? others?
MilesFox replied to nathan.chase's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i had to do this one time as a result of excessive coolant los out the weep hole, it just poured out. but then again i had driven on the pump for too long. but jb weld plugged it up enough to get across another state and then change the water pump once i got one. i think this was in ohio thru west virginia -

you should be ok if you drive your car everyday and stay within your normal driving habit. 2 times i lost a belt were during hard acceleration on original belts. if the belts have been changed once before you would be ok as long as there are no leaks on the belts and the tension is proper from who did the repair typically i see originl belts go around 135-145,000 mi as i have seen in junkyard odo's and on my own vehicles the coolant loss could possibly be the water pump weep hole. if that leaks i would change the waterpump but worst case scenario is jb weld up the weep hole it would get you through a state. for precautionare measure i would o if i were you is just take off the belt covers before you go a nd if you have a problem it will be easier to fix. i wouldnt even deal with removing the crank pulley, just break off the covers around the crank pulley and remove the outers. its about impossible to get the crank pulley tourqe right with the motor in the car and hand tools. you dont want to have the crank pulley fall off! the water pump will lwey you know its bye-bye wen it leaks behind the pulley or the shaft is wobbling here is a motor with all the covers removed, outer and inner. the one behind the idler pulley remains here is the motor in the car. the pulleys are red, you can see the water pump -
i would thingk 2wd tranies and 4wd trannies have a difference in gearing. it seems any 4wd doesnt want to do much more than 95 naturally but my ea81 fwd 5spd wagon would sail along at 100 mph at 4000 rpms and evens o with a floppy carb and a blown head gasket i did notice 2wd trannies seem ot have longer gears

How are these cars for towing?
MilesFox replied to ZRX Doug's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
you should be able to tow 1000-2000 lbs no problem with you r soob. especially being a manual, especially since it has lo range i have towed 3500 and 4000lbs cross states with my sedan. its a little tough getting going towing another soob up a hill in chicago rush hour bit lo range will save the day in that situation towing a motorcycle will be no chore for the soob if you really got heavy into towing you can remove the rear half of the driveshaft to use lo range all the time or better yet convert to rear drive with lo range for towing i work at u-haul and the last time i checked there was a subaru gl hitch in the detroit area, its one for he more expensive hitches but the price is including the labor. call your local u-haul and get the retail price of the hitch itself or availability. ask for the employee discount even you can buy the hitch outright and if you haggle you may be able to pick it up for right around 150 bucks the wiring you will need would be one of the converter boxes they sell at u-haul the part number is 13486 and the price is $16.95 -

she must have felt empowered. i bet she has no kids and her husband beats her...maybe that's too much to say but her blood pressure must be better than that of any subaur';s oil pressure that's for sure!

actually, i have done a leganus timing belt once before, fired up on the first try, this was the only time i have done one. anyway i dont remember the lignment procedure as t was somewhat complicated printout from the internet. i know i wrote the book on timing belts for ea82, but where is a diagram for the 2.2? we were smart to leave the covers open for easy access, it seems t me the passenger cam slipped whilst donuting the TRUCK STOP! the intake makes ill farting noises the more you open the throttle, as if the compression is flying past open intake valves. the car seems to idle fine as far as its running off the drivers side cylinder bank just fine.

Could Subaru make a worse bumper!

mine fell off.. -
suppo0se the cone washer was on bacward, or not present at all. this will cause the nut to back off. not a matter related to remanufacture, but rather installation

Home alignment on EA82 wagon
MilesFox replied to ShakotanBoogie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
forgot to mention this car has xt6 conversion 5lugs with 2wd legacy macpherson struts. Myoss Feece aligned the tie rods pretty good but we never thought of the alignment being off at the bolts on the strut-to-knuckle. i think if the struts were aligned the tie rods would then be way off. the car is out of line to begin with since zanny dook crashed it into a the turbo wagon on our way back from midwest 2 meet -
long term engine storage tips?
MilesFox replied to hooziewhatsit's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i read some stuff about filling the crank case and cylinders with diesel fuel. also if you take off the timing belts you can center the cams at 12:00 so all the valves are closed now and again with the belts off you can spin the oil pump cog with an impact or drill to pressurize and circulate the oiling system -
D/R 5 speed driveshaft Q's
MilesFox replied to newsoobdude's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
any 4wd 5spd driveshaft will work wether it be part time, full time, dual or single range, sedan, wagon, 3door, xt and xt6, clutches are the same as well. have fun -
oh yeah i forgot to mention that u-haul wont rent a tow dolly to a subaru. i work at the u-haul as a matter of fact. that doesnt mean you cant tow a dolly should you get one by other means. i wouldnt tow anthing on the auto transport with a subaru but towing an empty auto transport isnt impossible. but then again the tow dolly has no tongue weight.

i towed wth my gl sedan 2wd at converted to 4wd 5spd, my 87 rx loaded down with parts on a tow dolly some 300 miles or so. it can do it, the gearing is appropriate, if you are confident in your driving skills the car will do it just as well. i towed with a 1,000 lb hitch and a 2,000 lb ball, did ok although it probably wouldnt hold up in a crash. i wont tell you not to do it, but then again i would only do it within your confidence to do so. my rig was pulling a good 3,500 lbs altoghether. i have made the same tow fairly often and even in heavy rain, where i used the 4wd hi at 70 mph. just use common sense, defensive driving, plenty of stopping distance, and no erratic maneuvers. the only warning i can present to you is that i am Miles Fox, and i am crazy like that.

Using Diesel to increase octane ratings...

i would use kerosene. about a gallon or 2 for a full tank. we used it when roberts car got stuck in the river -
*stabs* Timing belt cover bolts not coming out
MilesFox replied to Syonyk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
wedging a flat screwdriver between the cover and twisting it will usually get it. and this way, you can pop the covers back on if you want to use them, they usually fit tightly so its not like they will fall off -

MilesFox replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
this sounds like the spider intake mpfi. i have seen non turbo on an 87 but not a turbo version in person. late 87 models and ones listed as "88" i would presume i guess it was the 84 brat had an automatic tranny for only one year (4wd)
