RX WTF engine issues...a solution
are you still using the spfi block? what about o-ringed head gaskets, around the cylinders themselves?

ok, i stand corrected on that one. Now i know to get it right next time. and those dashes with the near white lighting, the other lighting on the instrument bezel is still orange

Exhaust Q.
yes, the other holes can be used. i would recommend installing studs, with thread locker on the head end, and anti-seize on the nut end

87 RS turbo 3-door in junkyard
license and insurance. i can always transfer the plate. its all a contemplation anyway about the car. how is that bad, but if i want to beat a wrx, its no problem? my car is all legal and my insurance current. if i didnt sell my car in idaho, i would still be in jail there to this day. and driving a 3-door aound is no different than driving my current trashwagon. its not like i dont deserve to build another subaru. so corky, step off my tail, especially if what you have to say has nothing to do with the topic. if you want to have words of such with me, there is PM. i think we can get along. its fun to match wits, but we should leave the personal stuff out. this gets old on the board already. i dont have to prove anything. the board is showing its :moon: over me too much and too often

warp3, what you are describing is a part time 4wd 5spd dual range, the RX has an open center diff. this not all aapply to the full-time units. but the diff lock on the full-time acts like a part time when its in 4wd

i was referring to the pert time units as 5spd Dual Range, and the RX trans as the Full-Time Dual Range

would you have a copy of the crossmember mod diagram for the conversion i mentioned. didnt reagan make an adapter to use ea82 struts for an xt-6 knuckle. i am interested in making one myself. I'll take a peek on xt6.net. tom told me about it, over the xt6 that we both parted

87 RS turbo 3-door in junkyard
yeah, but a stock RX aint all that. my turbo wagon gave it a good run for before the head crapped out. my piont is i try these things. i can say that i have fixed a turbo motr and ported the heads because i did. the cars in the junkyard would make fun project. there is a 3-door with a turbo, and a spd wagon right beside it, and i have a carload of xt6 suspension. yeah, i know, i can hear it coming, but i DO have the 5spd Full Time 3.9 , AND a turbo single range hmm, full time in the rs, dual range in my wagon, turbo 5spd in the junkyard wagon. sounds like fun. we dont have a justy. we dont have a rally cross, but we still have subarus, and we take them out for laps on the field. my buddy has an rx. this potential project would be an interesting rival for the rx my point some more: RX: turbo Project: turbo, custom intake, custom exhaust(and i'm talkin a cherry bomb) RX: Full Time Dual Range 3.7 gear Project: Full Time %spd 3.9 gear RX:Rear Anus Lift and 16 inch chevy 6-lug 205/55 Project: XT6 5-lug suspension and 215/60 15 inch impreza wheels xt6 swaybars it seems to be an even match, for vs. an RX

hey, i didnt know the last detail, but oh-well. I had never seen an 86 RX, that's all. lets see some more pics. i am a fan of 85 an d 86, i like them better for an ea82. i had an 86 wagon, and an 86 sedan. the wagon became parts, the sedan was a 4wd auto, and a 5spd dual range from the wagon. i like the interiors better, and especially the steering wheel! i think it would be neat to do an RX conversion to a GL, with all the stuff that would make it an RX

I like that XT, with the paint and all. i recognize it from RGuyvers msn group. i got the lower control arm mod and ea82 axle on my wagon like on his hatch

how fast am i going?
if you can find a 170 that would be good for driving it hard. you dont want it too cool, but you want the room for error, so to spaek. my buddy has a 160 in the rx, it is a hair below the middle of the temp ga, but it will still warm up to OT when being driven hard enough., but it is less prone to get hot, also. try an xt spider intake, it will let you use ej motor stuff. if you can get an xt-6 suspension, you can use impreza/legact wheels, knuckle, strut, and axle on the front, and impreza/legac wheels and brake rotor on back, with ea 82 rear suspension and axles but to use that, you will need either a full time turbo automatic, an rx trans, or a pushbutton 4wd 5spd from a turbo, for the spline count on the impreza axles get a fatter exhaust down pipe past the turbo

High Output EA82T
I ported the heads on my 87 gl-10. the turbo came on a lot stronger at lower rpms. Run a fatter Down-Pipe, if you can have one made, or simply run at least a 2 inch pipe out the rear, with a hi-flo muffler. a turbo is not necessarily that loud without a muffler, and if you run the pipe out tha back or side of the passenger compartment, it wont be loud inside (indiana law requires the exhaust exits past the passenger area) the carb block will get you 8.5 compression vs, turbo 7.7 compression. but the pistons from a carb motor will fit in the turbo block, if you wanted to keep the rods and crank stroke of the turbo engine shaving the heads wont really accomplish much, you dont want to take more than .010" (just to give a clean surface) as it would make the motor too narrow for the intake if you go much more than that. Subaru Junkie i believed shaved his ea81 heads, so ask him abut how much he took off. the pistons or block swap will well than make up for what shaved heads can do you might be able to find lighter valves, but i dont think you can go much bigger at all. the webbing between the valve seats id pretty yhin, and has a tendency to crack between the valves. Now it is common for the valves to crack between the valves, but thatis considered normal, as i believe there is a TSB out about it. But if the head goes bad, it usually drops a valve seat. all the heads i have seen that were too bad to use had the valve seat drop. the crack should be nice and flush with the surrounding metal. worse cracls will "fillet" out, enough to stick a fingernail in. the crack may go down towards the valve seat. thereis no water passage there, i had a crack that went TO the valve stem, and ran , but it dropped a valve seat later.(but this motor had 2 blown head gaskets when i got it) heads will drop a valve seat more than anything, the cracls in the exhaust port are the ones to watch out for. you may find a small 1cm crack by the spark plug hole, but that will be alright. but if you have a known good motor, the heads are nothing to worry about They say Gen 3 heads are the best, off later model turbos if you know thew bottom end is in good shape, it can handle a good 150, good enough for a cost-effective build you can also use xt mpfi spider intakes, in conjunction with impreza intercoolers, or make some kond of hi-flow intake and filter. intake and exhaust alone will free up some hp. you can modify the wastegate or use a boost controller to get more boost, you can go a good 12-13 psi before you have to worry about an intercooler. with the carb block, use a slightly higher octane, and tweak the timing. wjm on the board had turbo on an spfi block 9,5:1 cr, with hi-octane gas. ask his expertise about driveability and reliability of high compression somewhere on the board there is an electrical mod to the MAF to bypass the fuel cut-off

Yo! chill out and calm down. easy now. "Dammit Jim, i'm a Fox, not a Doctor"! Hey, i called you out for your input. looks like you beat me to the post. i didnt expect to have what i said thrown out the tailpipe. I am not wrong, but there are a few things i did not know about for sure. so, ok, i learned something new. so did the guy who posted this topic, and anyone else who is reading this.... not unlike this........ http://usmb.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8000 Of Course I know about these cars. Maybe not all, but hey, i know now from what you said. But what I posted in response is NOT wrong. what is this about digital gauges? i never mantioned that. What i menat as green instruments is the Analog cluster, like in the RX i know of, and an 87 wagon. i had an 86 sedan, with orange, because pre 87 had orange. also, the digital dash does not have an oil pressure gauge, which the RX has the analog cluster for that gauge. The digital dash in my 87 gl-10 is Green. the one on a 85 Turbo wagon i had was orange. i did not dismiss it as an RX, and for sure not on the account that it wasnt a 3-door. i asked if it was a 3-door or a sedan because there was no picture of it! so the ON DEMAND 4wd 5spd is the pushbutton, right? and i quote myself: I'm sorry if i were to post first. at least there was good dialogue and a lot got said. i'm sure he was happy with his quick and informative response. read his replies. Corky, i called on you to add some of your Expertise, baut all you got out is the fact that they werent white in 86. That was shown by Warp3. The board speaks for itself........................................... The Single Range had a 3.700 gear. LSD may have been an option for 86, but that i dont know of. I'm sure Corky can tell us, so lets hear it, Dr.RX:D

are you sure its an RX? rx's were white with gray bumpers and side molding, and has the letters "RX Full-Time 4WD" on the side. they made black ones in late 89, a special edition.. but you DO have the 4wd hi-lo? does it have the center console like the pic i posted? if you look under the rear of the car, you will see the rear diff. there should be a plaque there(if its not there it fell off) that will say LSD if it is limited slip, and have the 3.700 gear ratio but if its a part time 5spd dual range, it will have a 3.900 gear. also, if its a part time unit, the 4wd will lite up in green, the lo in yellow, and it wont have the pic of the 4wd already there like the pic i posted here is an 87 RX 3-door http://usmb.net/gallery/albun92/Oct11_39 and agian with body molding http://usmb.net/gallery/albun92/RXDoorsOpen the molding onthis car has been painted black 5spd dual range part time did not come as stndard for turbos. yours may be a special order though. i have not seen an example of a turbo with a 5spd dual range. does yourt shifter hava 4wd button on the shifter knob itself? if so, its single range, which DID come with turbo, like my gl-10 wagon has put up the VIN and someone here can tell you if the car is original, with its original features also, being an 86, it should have height adjustable front struts..- fuse goes when I engage 4wd ('91 loyale)
if you, go get a Haynes Manual Subaru 1600 & 18oo, it has comprehensive wiring schematics- new subaru RX owner..looking for info
yes, the hazard on 87+ is where the lights are, the lights are on the turn signal on 87. the fan is where the wiper is on 87, and the 87 wiper is on the right steering column. the 87 has a blox-off plate where the 86 fan was. you say the 4wd light kicks on, do you mean the diff lock? what does your shifter/4wd lever look like. the middle of the dash will show a pic of a drivetrain that says 4wd, then a LO light will come on when the lever is moved up, and a DIFF LOCK will come on with the diff lock switch diff lock switch http://usmb.net/gallery/albun92/Oct11_47 the atatchment is the LO and DIFF LOCK lights- fuse goes when I engage 4wd ('91 loyale)
i would rather rig up a coat hanger than leave mine up on jack-stands, thats for sure.(until its fixed for real)- Dead pressure plate pic
looks glazed. maybe a sanding disc will clean it up, if it werent so grooved. i always sand down my clutch bits when re-using them... - new subaru RX owner..looking for info
