  1. i have mounted the ea82 pump to an ea81 motor. i have also put an ea82 motor ina glf, and swapped some lines from an ea82 to adapt it to the glf rack yes, it can be done i noticed the ea81t has the ea82 airbox, and the battery and coilonthe opposite side,(as in ea82 body, and what i did to my ea82 install on tashwagon)
  2. my sent messagees folder was full its a go. like my new avatar?
  3. i remember my 83 turbo had an ea82 unit
  4. mine did that last night. i'll dump it again. keep hollerin' if you wanna hollar at josh his board name is 1ABAJA
  5. the ciltons book we had didnt have squat. the haynes book has "typical 84 thru 86 mpfi" and 87-84 mpfi one of the wires was labelled brown with black stripe, but the hrness had brown with red stripe. it was the oly brown wire on both the schematic and the harness. yes, it will be standalone. it will run of the spfi coil, but the little dookiet on the bracket will be disconnected. i will wire it up to get it working, and then instal it. if i dont have time to install it, it wil go in the spae tire compartment and connect directly to the battery. but when id does install, it will come in thru the grommet on the passenger firewall, down along the rocker panel, and under the wagon seat. the clip off the ecu will plug into the fuel pump, and the spfi's will hang. all of the spfi connections under the hood will hang too, maybe tape off the connectors and tuck them away, but leave them un-messed with we got as far as having the xt motor out, and the spfi motor out. originally we were going th leave the add-on air conditioner in tact, but the spfi had the long water pump and the xt had the short water pump, and we didnt have the short pump v-pulley required to do so. so we decided to sacrifice the ac for not having to swap water pumps. but we had a problem. the xt flexplate bolts were on super tight, slightly rounded. we got 2 out, but we risk tearing up the bolts too much trying to use 12 point 3/8 dr sockets, and the one 6 side socket we used split on the first try. we amde a last ditch efor to go to walmart for a socket, but hey either had 12 point metrics or 6 point standard, in sets, none would do any good. so we were considering just resealing the spfi and put it back likeit was. but here is the dilemma. the spfi pukes oil, like it is under pressure. jim has cam cover gaskets and an oil pump gasket. the oil leaks onto the crossmember right next to the motor mount hole, which looks to me to be leaking out the o-ring on the cam box where it meets the head. when she runs she has a steady "pour" loke when you dump the last little bit of oil out a quart bottle so tomorrow we are going to go get a good socket, and 1/2 dr set. we need to get at least one motor onthe car and running, but it would be pointless to get the spfi back in if we dont have the o-ring. and if we were to do the rear seal, we would need the socket to pul the flywheel anyway. so in the effort we may as well go with the turbo engine afterall i told jim it was his call, and he said "get one of those motors in" so its up in the air at this point
  6. the wires you want to jump are at the shifter itself, inside the center console. thee is a flat wide connector that connects the auto shifter to the wiring harness. i had jumped it before, but i cant remember what wires. but i fugured it out by jumping around til i got it right!
  7. i had the idea to do the same if i were to get an xt6 for the trashwagon. but i would mount my rad to the hood itself. anyway, very nice, its cool to see a working examole of such an adea. is the mesh a pre existing ventailation cover or a custom unit?
  8. I have the ecu and its wiring harness out and cleaned up. i just finished pulling the knock control unit(86) i grouped the wires and taped them up. the green clip is still there, i will leave it until i find what to wire to. i have the haynes book for a diagram, some of the colors are different than in the book, but i pretty much know what's what. the ecu has its own fuel pump clip, so i will disconnect the spfi's and use it. i will most likely mount the whole unit under the rear seat in the wagon. next comes out the xt motor, then the wagon goes in, and out comes its motor. after swapping brackets and the flywheel, i will connect the ecu and get it running before i make my final connections and installation.
  9. got most of the inside of the xt apart. what was subaru thinking? that xt was pput together in a way that i swear subaru shoved elves in the dashboard to put the screws in, and the elves had to find their way out thru the seams between the plastic! i had to pull the center console, during which i pulled the seats to get to 2 screws(seats were coming out anyway) i had to pull the whole dashboard, after getting the steering column out. i dont understand why you would have to get behind the radipo to pull it out, its still in the dash with impossible screws. keep tearing apart to then find out the ECU is in the Trunk! but its not a waste, because i need the wiring up to the firewall and engine. alleyboy is getting the dashboard anyway. back to work, gotta get the whole bizzle
  10. i'm not upset- just needed to be sure what you meant the first time. now its all said and done.
  11. where is the ecu located on a xt ?
  12. the xt 6 in butler has the ft4wd single range. by buddy said it has a 3.9 gear! a 3.9 gear dhould do 60 at 3500, while a 3.7 will do 65
  13. make sure to keep up on its flui changes, and clean and inspect the governor shaft, as most autos go to hell from lak of attention. check the front diff oil. it uses gear lube. it has a separate reservoir and dipstick than does the ATF
  14. i dont know about where to buy one or order one from, but i can tell you that if you go lookin for junkyards, youll find them in most turbo models, and ones that didnt come with a clutch fan. try gl-10 turbos specifically although they may appear in non turbo models, like this 88 spfi wagon we are working on. (but we're swapping a turbo into it!) spmeone on the board may have one for you, and by where you are located, someone not too far away. try the marketplace forum you could try ebay others can give you a link to a place to order from
  15. here is a little deductive logic from what you all said the ea81 turbo ale will fit the same as a non turbo. although the axle itself might be thicker in diameter, it will have the same spline count as a normal axle. EA81T's came from the factory with the automatic. The automatic has the same spline count 4spd dual range, 2wd 5spd, 4wd automatic, and 2wd automatic. They should all be the same as long as they stay on the same engine. ea 81 will not work with ea 82 and vise versa That is not true. I had an ea81t wagon that had a 5spd 4wd from an ea82 installed. So that means that not only does the 5spd dual range have the same spline count, but that means that any ea82 5spd 4x4, 4wd automatic, 2wd 5spd, and 2wd auto have tha same spline count, as well as non-turbo single range pushbutton 5spd. On ea82 Turbo models, any with the 4wd and 2wd 3spd automatic will have the same spline count. But the single range pushbutton 4wd 5spds and 4spd full time autos, and rx dual range 5spds have a different spline count. quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by GeneralDisorder EA71 depends on which bell houseing it has. If the starter is in the middle, the axles will be different. If the starter is to the right like an EA81, then the axles are the same as any EA81 axle. GD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i'm telling you that aint true. i pulled the axels from a ea71 hatchback with the STARTER IN THE MIDDLE and put them on my ea81 with the STARTER ON THE LEFT. The transmissoin with the starter on the top is the ea71 BBELLHOUSING, and the one with the starter on the top has the EA81 bellhousing. so if the axle will fit from an ea71 single rangetransmission onto an ea81 dual range transmission, then that means the same axle will fit on any of the aforementioned transmissions(except for the mentioned turbo transmissions). this also proves that either mentioned axle will fit against either mentioned transmisson in either a gen1 pre-79 and gen2 80-84wagon, sedan, coupe -89 hatch and brat, in either combination Also EA81 2wd and EA82 2wd axles are not the same. The EA82 axles have a longer shaft. so is true. that is because the ea82 has a wider track than ea81 and earlier bodies. using any ea82 or ea81 axle against any transmission will depend strictly on which body it is going on. but my 83 wagon has ea82 axles! no that's not impossible, and no, it didnt just fit. that's my secret for now(although some of you may know what it is!)
  16. i was having a similar discussion with a budy about explaining the RX open center diff, and the limited slip on the rear axle. we got so confused in our trying to understanding eachother that he suggested that "if i put the RX on jackstands, and turn the rear axle forward, then one front tire would spin the same way, and the other front tire would spin backwards." and then it made sense for both of us
  17. so let me know when you come to indy. where i am at tonight is equidistant to indy and where i live as i ponder, i wonder what would be a good way to wire the ign pulse signal to the spfi's ecu to kick on the fuel pump? leaving all the spfi stuff intact, so it will work the same with the absence of the turbo junk. i really dont feel the need to pull the carpet up, although the seats will get swapped.
  18. no, tis is a rig if you havent seen one! yes, that's sheet metal all down the side, and the "EA82" sticker aint lyin'! this was the last trashwagon, the one described in the signature! i drove the bizzle all the way out west, although the trip almost ended some 15 miles into the 2300 mile venture. but it only got back as far as idaho, because of my dumb A. its still there waiting for me
  19. well get your A over here and give me a hand!
  20. and when it blows out the windshield you will be glad the hood is there to keep your eyes from drying out!
  21. i meant ign coil. they were both starting batteries, one interstate, and the other some duralast or wal-mart brand. maybe the way it was grounded had something to do with it. it might have not been a parallel connection the way i had it. i was for a little bit running a spare battery in the car with jumper cables to the main. i dont recall voltage spikes then. but it was good year ago at least.............
  22. that's cool. its your ride, do with it what you like. at least you can be driving it around instead of having it up on jackstands! but keep the mod in mind for your next project---its not as much as it sounds to be! as long as you already have all the parts!!!
  23. i cut off the mounting part from the air box, then welded a piece of exhaust pipe expanded to fit the diameter of one of those big cheap ricer cone filters. and it sticks out of the hood like a jet engine!http://usmb.net/gallery/albun92/Oct21_53?full=1
  24. looks yummy. so how many licks does it take to get to the water passages?
