diesel subaru?
ACtually, diesel engines do burn more efficiently than gas engines do. Why do you think that Diesels were exempt having catalytic converters until well into the 80s (Probably earlier in CA though) MY 82 Rabbit has no catalyst. Less HC and less CO emissions, NOx emissions arent' that much less. Most of the "dirty" stuff that diesels put out is particulates (Soot) which can be avoided by proper tuneups and maintenace, and not loading the engine down, shifting properly, etc... Aside from the smell, the smoke, and the noise, I'd take a diesel over a gas engine any day.

Push Button 4WD questions
Your transfer clutch might be shot too, although I would think even with that being toast, with it up in the air it should spin the rear tires a little bit?? I rebuilt one of those trannies, it was out of an 86. Those XFer clutches are a pain to do, you have to press a bearing off the shaft (which took me an entire day to find the right damn press adaptors) to get the clutch apart.

LSD? am I halucinating or what???

Do these stupid things work??
well, it DOES have a moneyback guarantee...... maybe read the fine print and like, put one on and see :-P

Do these stupid things work??
Says it;s supposed to increase gas mileage by 27% and that is uses technology from GM, but knowing GM, if it DID work, they'd be installing it on their cars :-P http://www.yeez.org/default.asp?axel=4996

Turbo rebuilding
hmm, so I guess whoever told me that oil inside turbo/plenum = bad turbo seals was mistaken. So I will try a new PCV and see if that helps. Gotta crank up the boost too sometime, after I get my I/C:headbang:

Turbo rebuilding
The oil seals in my turbo are starting to go, when I took my plenum off to paint it there was a bunch of oil inside of it, and when I hammer on it I smell burning oil a lil while later, and it seems to lose oil if I get on it too. So where would I get the seals and are they hard to replace??

Turbo Timers, which should I get?
Hondasucks replied to Hondasucks's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHmm, maybe I'll just save the 80 bucks and rather than getting a Turbo Timer, I'll get a WRX I/C instead :-)

what is wrong with these cars?
Hondasucks replied to citabrickr's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYeah, dude, you got one of teh rare lemons that come about. I bet the previous owner never changed the oil or did any other maintenance on it. I've had 10 Soobs... I think hold on lemme count... 87 hatch, 260k engine still runs 77 wagon 86 wagon (parts, 187k with blown h/g, but still ran) 84 4WD wagon 343K when engine blew due to my own stupidity 82 2WD auto sedan (Still have, converted to 4WD manual) 178k when I swapped the motor to the one out of my hatchback because teh previous owner didnt' take care of it and it made noise and leaked oil everywhere 83 GL-10 117k when I bought it, still running around town (get's teh poop run out of it cuz the guy I sold it to treats everything like it's a race car) 91 Legacy LS, almost 200K when I traded it for my 87 Turbowagon, ran like a top too. 87 GL Turbo wagon, 165k on the car, ??? on the motor (Not original) Runs like a champ. so how many is that....*counts* Eight.. Ok so I was off :-P But out of eight soobs, only one of them would I consider even a remote Lemon, that was my 84 wagon, but it had almost 350,000 miles on it, I rescued it from a junkyard and replaced the blown head gasket and water pump, and I had to half-rump roast the front end back together cuz some parts had been taken off @ the JY, cuz I needed a car, so it main;ly had front end problems, but other than that it was a good car. Orignal motor died due to lack of water when I blew a hose and didn't know it because the stupid temp gauge didnt' work :-( So if I were you, if it doesn't give you any more trouble, keep it, if it does, fix it and sell it and get another one. But make sure you get one wiht a known history, or with a warranty.

Turbo Timers, which should I get?
I'm looking at getting a Turbo Timer for my 87 GL, was wondering if anyone could make some recomendations as to which one I should buy? A'PEXi makes a cool looking one that is compact, and it has an 02 monitor which will act as a mixture indicator, can get it for like $80 + Shippign on Ebay.

Pic of JDM XT-6

Subaru GL Brake Circuits
Most Front-engine front wheel drive cars are set up that way, because if they were set up front to rear like most RWD cars are, if you lost teh fronts, there is so little weight over teh back wheels, you'd stomp the brakes and it would set the car spinning. (So instead, you mash the brakes and change lanes :-P)

My Ru is too tall!!!!
There are limits to to the bumper height (Can't be having any little Ricers getting their Honda stuck underneath that Durango on 44's now can we?) too. I think in Oregon 50" is the largest tire you can run on-road, and I forget what the height limit is as far as lift goes (Maximum vehicle height I think is 14 feet or somethign like that, I forget..)

charge, brake fluid, and stop dash lamps turned on?
On mine, one of the diodes was bad. Running it in-car would show nothing, unless you checked the AC voltage coming off of it or used an oscilloscope.. Quite obvious with an O'Scope, cuz teh pattern instead of being this ^^^^^^^^ will be ^^^^_^^^ basically. Have them check it with a scope, or put an AC voltmeter on it, it should not read more than 1 volt AC, anything more you have diode issues.

running lights flash after battery replaced
Hondasucks replied to dkasberg's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe factory alarm system on those is partly installed on all vehicles, they just add another module to it when they put the full alarm in. There is some trick to making it stop, if I remember correctly it's cycle the from off to on 5 times or something like that. A dealer should be able to help you, or consult your owners manual. I remember reading about this happening to another board member.

charge, brake fluid, and stop dash lamps turned on?
It's an alternator issue, I think it is an open field winding that will make those lights come on? Somethign like that, anyway, swap your alternator out and it should be fine. I had teh same thing happen to my 84 wagon, and my 77, and it turned out that the alternator had a problem with it.

pushbutton 4wd won't engage
Turbone, you're thinking of the automatic. The Manual PB4WD is vacuum actuated. On the driver's side by the strut tower there are two vacuum switches, which feed vacuum to a big vacuum actuator, about 3-4" in diameter which is located on the driver's side of teh transmission. Check teh hoses, and check teh solenoid switches. IF anything, you can directly connect the correct side of the diaphragm to manifold vacuum to lock it into 4WD, I don't know which side engages 4WD. If neither side makes it engage, than that diaphragm is bad. I have one if that is the case. The 4WD light on the dash won't light unless the transmission actually shifts into 4WD.

Schwab stories...
Here in Albany we have this Mexican guy that works at Scwabs, I DO NOT let him anywhere NEAR my car, he's one of those guys, that it's obvious he knows jack squat about cars, and is only there because of affirmative action. Not to slam anyone who is mexican or anything, but this is one of those guys who is not only a complete moron, but also speaks poor english as well. Last time I went in there was because oen of my snow tires wasn't holding air, he told me that "tires lose air over time" I told him the tires on my car had been on it for over a year, and I've never had to add air. Got a blank stare on that one. On top of that, he didn't mount the tire correctly so later in my friends driveway it came off the bead. And I took my parents' Sable wagon in there for a flat repair, and when they put it up on the lift they crushed a fuel line, and got grease all over the interior. I was at my friends house when I noticed that there was fuel everywhere, so I called them up, they came out and patched it, and then I drove it back there where they took about 4 hours to fix it, all the while teling me it was "my fault" because I had been out "4 wheeling" in the car.. It had been wrecked before, and the undercarriage was a little bangtified, but nothing near where the fuel lines were that got damaged. (Leave it to Ford to run the lines underneath where they can get damaged, rather than inside like Subaru does.)
