Mid 80's Nissans also had them. I know because I pulled a couple last year at the bone yard. Of course... That was last year... Now I have NO IDEA where I put the damned things when I got home!!!!
-
Cool on the steering wheel. I'll send you a check to cover shipping. One of these days I will have to get an account with UPS... But not today.
-
Well, the alt checked out fine. Now, on to the ignition switch.
-
It's a new alt though. Still, I'll have it tested this morning just to make sure.
-
Are you kidding... It is registered as a wagon. That just makes the insurance that much cheaper!!!!

So, we bought the 83 Brat from SubaruJunkie!!!! It's a very nice ride! It has Legacy seats, which make it extremely comfy to drive!!!! Here are the main issues that need to be taken care of. * Need to get car smogged. Exhaust gaskets are shot. Will have those tomorrow... Of course, it's going to rain for the rest of the week and the garage is fulll of crap, so there is no room to pull in. I will get a little wet tomorrow. * Alternator charge problem. It only starts charging after the engine has been revved up to about 4000 RPM. I put a new ground from the block to the chassis, and that may have helped a little. * Ignition switch is somewhat squirley. Easy enough to fix. Wonder if that might be affecting the charging issue. * Will definitely need a new clutch soon. * Hood release cable is two threads shy of breaking. Will also hit the bone-yard for that, or see if anyone here on the list has a spare, OK. Here is a pic of the Brat in our driveway. Oh, and one more thing. I will be on a quest to find a brown steering whelel to match the brown Legacy seats!

instrument cluster, e;ectronic?
Sonicfrog replied to beginner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Did mine a couple of years ago. It's a bit of a pain... But worth it! I hated that digi-dash! The previous model looked so much better - cool layout and orange color! I thought about swapping one of those in, but they are quite temperamental - fry very easily - so I went with an analog. I did use orange bulbs to light the dash, and put tiny LED's behind the needles to give them a red glow. It didn't turn out quite as well as I would have liked, but it's good enough. My on-line pics have disappeared (probably the results of a server change when the old one done blowed up) I'll post some picks tonight. -
Well ... I may have finally done it ...

Yep. Goes directly to the alt. I'd be surprised if it survived... assuming that wasn't the cause of your problem in the first place. -
Dude.... Where Are My Tires????
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Keep in mind, because Murph is a GL-10 turbo, my tiers are P18570/13 and are a little bigger than the standard that comes with the normally aspired GL's. -
Dude.... Where Are My Tires????
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sears has been my go-to tire place for several years. The Sears in this area, and even the ones some 100 miles away, don't carry this size at all. I did find some at Discount tires. http://www.discounttirecenters.com/list.php?size_1=185&size_2=70&size_3=13&go=Get+Tires&db=tires&search=tiresize -
Anyone else having a hard time getting tires for their old Roo??? I'm looking for rubber for Murphy, the 87 Turbo Wag, and not having much in the way of success.

Best music for wrenching on the Subaru
Sonicfrog replied to diluded000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
+ 1 I like stuff that is not as well known. Give me some David Baerwald, Kevin Gilbert, Toy Matinee, Crowded House, Split Enz, Niel and Tim Finn..... And I can wrench for hours at a time! -
I have an 87 T-Wag - Murphy, the $500 87 Turbo Wag!!!!!. Love The Car!!!! Soooo much fun to drive!!! Most important things to check / replace..... water hoses that are connected to the turbo!!! The USMB is rife with guys, myself included, that have had one of those fail while driving. They are a pain in the royal arse to replace, so do it now before they inconvenience you on the road. On a related note, does the car have the original radiator? The original was adequate for the non-turbo models, but barely kept up with the extra heat generated by the turbo engine. The dual core rads work MUCH BETTER for this car! This is well worth the cost. If I would have known about this or... uhm... listened to the guys here on the list when I first got my GL-10, I would have saved myself much time and money doing this right off the bat! When i bought my car, the previous owner was having problems with head gaskets. Turns out, the cause was indeed a bad radiator. People here told me I should definitely replace mine when I first bought the car... but did I listen???? Well, a blown head gasket three months later convinced me they were right!!!! If you have the 3 speed automatic, you will soon notice it gets crappy gas mileage, especially on the freeway. The reason is that the tranny was designed in an era when the max speed limit in the US was 55 mph. At that speed, the top great would be up to about 3000 RPM. At 75, which is the norm in todays driving world, you'll find you're pulling roughly 4000 RPMs out of the thing. It sucks gas... And just plain sucks! This is why so many, myself included, have done the crappy 3 speed auto to awesome 5 speed manual swap. It's some work, but well worth it. Another thing - does yours have the Pneumatic Air Suspension? Mine did. it was great while it worked, but once they break down, they are very expensive to fix. When it fails, it's much better to just swap in a normal strut assembly and be done with it. If you're good with electronics, you may find yourself pulling the digital dash in lieu of an analog one. That is not as easy as you would think. You would need to replace the on-off oil sensor at the front of the engine with a pressure sensor as the analog gauge requires it. All that said, again... I LOVE this car!!!!! I've had it for five years now, and don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon.

Intake Manifold Bolts... Teflon Tape???
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the replies. The teflon tape seemed to work well on the water port. Will use an anti-lock thread coating on the intake bolts. -
Anyone have any objections to using teflon tape on the intake manifold bolts, especially the long ones! Murphy, the $500 87 Turbo Wagon actually got the name "Murphy" - as in Murphy's Law - because both of the long ones broke when I was rebuilding it when I first bought it. I'm almost done with the head gasket replace, and one of the bolts was very close to breaking. So I'm thinking teflon tape on those, and on the turbo water port tube screw on the bottom of the engine, which also broke the first time working on the car. Any objections?????
-
Well, it looks like something got into the # 1 cylinder and banged around a bit. The head has matching scars. There was more carbon build-up in that cylinder than the others, which would indicate that happened a while ago. I bought the engine a year or so ago, a used import, and for all I know, this happened before I ever got the engine installed in Murph.
-
When I put Murphy, the 87 Turbo Wagon back together (blown head gasket of course) I'm going to finally throw the intercooler on that I've had laying around for over a year. It is a behind-the-wheel IC from a VW Corrado. Very big. and should provide ample air cooling. I'm planning to mount it where the spare was.The spare disintegrated a long time ago and foolish me, I never replaced it. I'm planning on venting using the hood vents from a Datsun 280Z.
-
Time to go feed the bird, feed the doggies, then go pull me some EA82T heads off the car! UPDATE: Heads are now off. I don't see the usual signs of a blown gasket, one cylinder with different colorations or deformed gasket. BUT, this is probably the earliest I've caught the problem before things got all wonkey.
-
BINGO!!! The one and the same!!!! I've got the intake manifold and all the top stuff off. I WAS going to pull the engine to replace the HG's, but, since the engine is so new, and there is no sign of an oil leak, I think I'll just pull the heads with the engine still in the bay. Certainly wouldn't be the first time I've done that... Seeing that for all the Subies I've brought back to life w/o a cherry picker, I would put the figure at probably at least 15 if not more!

The Good News! - The 5 string Peavey Dyna Bass is polished and brimming with new stringyness! The bad news! Murphy, the 87 Turbo Wagon, has a blown head gasket. :-( The radiator sprung a leak and the car got hot. Didn't overheat, but I guess it was just enough. The milky oil of death has made it's telltale appearance. Well, it has been a few years, and I was running on the original gaskets from the latest replacement engine... so I suppose I'm due. There goes my plans to be lazy today. PS. Anyone want to buy a bass amp to help finance the repair????
