I just put in a new engine a month ago, so that's not it. :-) -
" My Brain Hurts!!!" ECU Strangeness.
Sonicfrog posted a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I seem to have a blinking disorder! So, I'm driving down the highway in Murph, the 87 Turbo Wag, and the "Check Engine" light starts to go on. It's flashing weirdly. When I get a chance to pull over, I check the ECU LED. It is flashing, but not in the normal way when it's giving a code. These are random flashed, some real long, and some real short. I've seen the CEL do interesting things when the O2 sensor goes out, but that has thrown a readable code in the past. My ECU is having a seizure. Any one else have this or similar experience? PS. -

Ah, it's aways for a girl, isn't it! I saw the same thing with the cylinder wall, but figured the gasket had blown, and sat around for a while. Wipe it down with DW40 and then check the condition. -

Separating Engine and Transmission

At this point, stepping on the clutch a few times has always worked for me. If you've taken the tranny support bolts off, put them back on. Engine and tranny like to be at the same level when coming apart and going back together. The easiest way to change the clutch is to pull the engine. With it stripped down as it is, you and a friend should easily be able to lift it out. You'll want to jack up the tranny a bit to get the engine mounts out of their seat under the engine. -
Question - Are the positive voltages that go to the clock all 12 volts, including the light dimming circuit? I'm ditching the trip computer (did the analogue swap and trip no longer functions) and want to throw in the normal clock. The trip runs on everything BUT 12v.

Check for a short in the wire leading to the sensor in front of the engine. The sensor is right below the crank pulley. -
So, it's spring break, and I have a little time on my hands. One project I want to finish is installing the intercooler on Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag. I have a couple of unresolved questions. (1) If I'm not increasing the boost, do I need to install a blow-by valve? I have one but an unclear if I need it. If I do need to install this, where / how does it hook up? (2) Scoop vs ???? I see that some of you who have installed an IC haven't bothered to install a scoop. I have a fun idea. I was thinking of using the hood vents from an old 280Z. Would look really cool. What tools do I need to cut / prep the hood?

XT seats for the Turbo Wag!!!!
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK. Here is the skinny. The rails on the XT on both driver and passenger seats are longer than the GL seats and are too different to make this an easy swap. The passenger side rails from the GL-10 seats would fit if you drilled a new whole in the bottom of the XT seat bracket and fastened it with a bolt and nut. That would not have been difficult at all. The big obstacle lies in the drivers seats. Because of the height adjustment mechanism, the rails are more complicated. Short of doing some welding, there is no way to swap this without some serious modding, something that I don't have the time or tools to do. Label this this project - FAIL. Now, does anyone want to buy some XT seats in very good condition? -
XT seats for the Turbo Wag!!!!
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
UPDATE: The problem with the seats is not that they are so low, the problem is that the rail that is attached to the XT seats are longer than the GL-10. The rails are interchangeable, but there will need to be spacers between the rail and the actual seat, and the lever that unlocks the seat to slide forward and backward is shorter on the GL-10 rail. Don't know if that will make a difference. Stay Tuned! -

Front and back fenders look good. The back would be hard to get as the bumper is sitting very close to the car behind it. -

I got the seats. I measured them before I pulled them. Looks like they are maybe 1/2 to 1 inch lower. I can live with that. I'll let you know what the final install shows. -
XT seats for the Turbo Wag!!!!
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The name? Simple. I bought it, not running, for $500. I replaced the engine, and when I was working on it, all sorts of things were going wrong. Intake bolts were breaking. Some of the flywheel bolt heads were stripped. I screwed up the rear main seal installation... twice. The auto parts store was selling me the wrong parts. I couldn't get the disty timing right.... etc, etc. I realized that this car was all about proving Murphy's Law to be correct, so when I finally finished, I decided the car had to be named Murphy. -
I was at the Boneyard today, and found an XT with brown front seats in very good condition. I assume they will bolt right into Murphy, the 87 GL-10 turbowagon. If not, what mods would need to be made?

Oh. My bad. I thought you had a wagon. It's there on the wagon, not on the sedan!!!! -
Why are third-eye Subaru's so rare?
Sonicfrog replied to sandor's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Many years ago, in the time before time, I had an 80 GL with the "Third Eye". It's kind of useless, but that's one of the things that made it so fun to have! I've often toyed with snagging one if I find it in the local boneyard. Would love to try and mod it to the 87 Turbowagon, just for the heck of it. -

In the fuse box under the steering column. Connect the green tabs. Oh, and remember to disconnect them after you're done. If you drive off with them connected, you'll get a check engine light. Ask me how I know.... -

Don't feel bad. Timing can be such a bear on these cars... easy to goof it up. I've done several engine swaps, and more often than not, I screw up the timing every time. With the flywheel "0" timing mark at the timer mark, the rotor should be pointing at about or just past the brake fluid reservoir, toward the brake booster. From there you will need to adjust using a timing light, with # 1 firing at + or - 20 btdc. If you need it, I'll post a photo of my timing marks tomorrow afternoon. -
Yep... You'll be back. Owning a Subaru is like being in the mafia... except for the murder and intrigue and the Italian / New York accents.
