  1. No error codes. I'm not sub'ing today, so I should have more time to devote to the problem. My best guess is the fuel pump. I'll know more when I can get ahold of a fuel line pressure tester.
  2. Definitely not belts. Had that before. Plus, the covers are off and they're in tact. It's not behaving like the timing is off either. It cranks up just fine. The after a moment or two, it dies.
  3. OK. I just tried starting the engine with the green test plugs connected. No difference. I pulled the main disty wire and I have a nice bright purple spark. Don't know if it means anything, but the fuel mix smells rich to me. I looked to make sure that there are no fuel leaks anywhere. I see nothing. I had a long day at work and didn't get around to doing much diagnostics. Will be back at it tomorrow, provided I have time.
  4. Also, you could go with the F-150, or 80's LTD pump. Really? That's kinda wild.
  5. I always use either Beacon or Arco. And I've been using either 89 or 91 (depending on the budget). Question: if it's the fuel pump, would it have to come from a turbo, or can I use any from the SPFI series? Got to go work now. Sub'ing for high school math.
  6. Kinda leaning in that direction. But won't know anything until tomorrow.
  7. Murphy, the $500 87 Turbo Wag is sick. Here's the mystery. Today I drove to Madera, 20 miles from Fresno, to pay for a speeding ticket. Murph ran just fine on the way up. When I got all done and the court drained my wallet, I went to start Murph, and after turning over, it died. It starts, but even if I punch the gass, it just won't keep running. The fuel filter is about a year old, so I don't think that's the problem. Plus the fact that it died so suddenly. In the past few months, I have had a little quirck where, on hard acceleration, Murph would have the ocasion to misfire. But it hardly ever happened, and if it did, it was almost always when the engine was cool, so it was difficult to find the problem. I'm not getting any codes. Any ideas? PS. I'm going to connect the green connectors and see if this bypass will keep the engine running. If it does, that should give me a clue where to look next.
  8. Car is running again. The newer tranny rocks! The l shifting is nice and firm, and I have a fourth gear once again. Thanks M-G-Gruff.
  9. Of course it's the front half of the drive shaft. I'll go to the non local J-Yards in the next few week and see if I can't scrounge something up.
  10. Went to a couple of J-Yards. All the Legacies were automatic. There are a few more but I won't have time to hit them for a few weeks, so I'm gonna put the old one back in. The joints are not loose, just tight. I sprayed some penetrating oil on them and that seemed to loosen them up a bit. I'll start hunting around for either a used one, or try and find a place that will replace them for cheap.
  11. OK, got the new(er) tranny for the 94 Legacy Alpine Wagon from Mountaingoatgruff (thanks man) and it is installed. The old tranny shaft was very loose, which explains why I lost fourth gear. Now I find that the U-Joint of the rear drive shaft is very stiff, and hardly moves at all. The dealer tells me that the U-Joint is not replaceable, and I would have to buy a whole new shaft for $642.00. Has anyone found a work around, or am I bone-yard bound?
  12. Very interested. When would you be available for pick-up? I own my own pool service / spa repair company, and when I'm not doing that, I substitute teach (no school today). In short, I'm my own boss - I can take time off at any time. You can contact me at 559-355-5457. Mike.
  13. Scoob. Does the engine actually start, or just crank. When I replaced my EJ22 in my 94 Alpine wagon, it wouldn't start. Turns out the wire connectors to the magnetic sensors on the cam and crank were reversed (cam sensor needed to be on the bottom plug on the tree, crank in the middle plug). I guess they switched them on different model years. After a little cutting and splicing, the engine started right up.
  14. Last year, I had bought an 84 Tercel with a bad tranny. I was going to fix it and sell it for a profit, but I couldn't get the tranny out. On Friday, I finally sold the car to the j-yard for $87. Well, when the tow truck driver came to pick up the car, he pulled up to tow the car away... except he was going to tow the wrong car! He pulle up behind my 87 Turbo Wagon (Murphy). I caught him before he could start hooking up the wheels, but, regardless, it was pretty funny.
  15. Hey All: Sorry I haven't posted much on the "New Gen" side of the forum - hey, what can I say, I haven't had to do anything to Red, the $300 94 Alpine Wagon.... until now. We have lost fourth gear in the manual tranny. I now have a bit of spare $$$$ and want to get a tranny. Am I limited to the 90 - 94 series, or will something newer fit? ...and does anyone in the Central Calif area have a tranny they would like to sell?
  16. That sucks... But WOW. That's some AWESOME Destruction!!!! My bet on the FOD is a piece of the disintegrated piston or valve ring.
  17. I figured it was the bulbs. I was loading up the car for band practice, and was set to go, and noticed only my parking lights were on. Funny, I thought, I don't remember turning down to the parking lights (I usually drive with the lights on). It was too dark to diagnose, so I decided to wait till morning.
  18. Murphy, the 87 Turbo Wag, is blind!!! They both went out yesterday. High beams still work. Does one fuse control low beams, or are the fuses divided by left and right.
  19. Curious, will the standard legacy rad cooling fans fit? It didn't look like there was much room for them.
