EA82T woes, need help
Sonicfrog replied to Subeast-EA81's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yep. The first time I worked on my EA82T, I didn't tighten the throttle body clamp down tight enough, and the airbox popped right off. The car would idle, but really wouldn't accelerate much. PS. So it's an airbox. I always wondered what that aluminum hoop-a-joop was called. -
Subaru Heaven or Hell !?

To quote Merlin from Excalibur: "I dream to some... A Nightmare To Others!!!". -
I had a fun one this year. I pulled the engine out of Murphy, the $500 87 Turbo Wag, to replace the leaky valve cover gaskets and reseal the cam towers. When I put the engine back together, I noticed i was leaking all sorts of oil from the front somewhere. Turns out I only put one of the screws in that held the oil fill tube in place. Oops.

seized up ea71....Why did it happen?
Sonicfrog replied to the sucker king's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Remember to take pics when you get the engine apart. We LOVE to rubberneck at other peoples disasters!!!!! -
It's on Craigslist Why am I sad? Because I don't have the money to buy it. If someone from this list gets it, you have to promise to let me drive it!!!!!! PS. Sorry I've been away for so long. Life kinda got busy. But a Subaru Junkie can only go so long without his monkey, so here I am, back on the board!

Anyone in South Florida want a GL10 with a bad 3AT?
Sonicfrog replied to daeron's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't think there IS a good 3AT. They rev so high, and gets such poor fuel economy, how can you even tell it's bad??? It sound like it's running normal to me!!! -
Me too. Many times.

Any Docs in the House? Want to Diagnose?
Sonicfrog replied to nwsunni's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, it sounds like exhaust to me. This spring I pulled an engine to fix... something - i don't remember, it becomes a blur after a while, - and three weeks after I put the engine back in, I started to hear a similar noise. I was sure I split the front pipe. When I finally got under and took a looksee, I found that some knucklehead (me) forgot to put the exhaust bolts on the passenger side exhaust manifold.... -

legacy stereo into loyale
Sonicfrog replied to The Scooby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I put an 05 Impreza CD / Tape / Radio into my 94 Legacy. Yes had to do a bit of rewiring. And yes, depth of the stereo compartment in the Loyale will be an issue. -
Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag - 20/21 city, 25/26 highway. Red, the $300 94 Alpine Wagon - about the same, maybe a little better on highway MPG. I've got a trip to San Diego scheduled mid July. I'm taking Murph, and I'm going to make an effort to go no more than 65 on the highway, but it's a turbo, and going slow is hard to do.

will EA82's run on 3 cylinders?
Sonicfrog replied to idosubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yep. Back in the early 90's, before the smog rules took effect, I have a 1980 GL wagon that had bad rings on one cylinder, causing very low compression. Would look like a crop duster going down the freeway. But I'll be damned if it didn't take me everywhere I steered it, including several trips form San Diego to Lancaster, and one to Big Bear ski resort. It later developed an oil leak that dripped reight on top of the cat. Man, I would get so much smoke in the cabin that when I opened the door, it probably looked like a scene from Cheech and Chong's "Up In Smoke" movie. -
So...yeah...My engine is screwed!!!
Sonicfrog replied to 4WDFrenzy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
4WDF, did you get the engine problem resolved? -
The oils leaks are down to a minimum now. Ha. Funny!!!

I will have to check out that site and see how much shipping is going to cost. Theoretically, since you live in Japan, it should cost you nothing, since the engines are shipped FROM Japan. You can just have them stop a crate before it leaves the shores. -

HEH! I was just about to post about the same thing, though mine doesn't sound nearly that bad. As many of you know, a couple of summers ago I fried the engine in Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag. Well, It has made some noise ever since, and now the noise is getting worse, and since I just got my last student loan dispersment... FINALLY!!! ... I'm think I'm ready to replace the engine. I get my engines from a company called Attarco. I've had great luck with this company. They have used EA82T's listed for $325. I think I,m gonna get me one. -
Re-routing turbo hoses?
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had considered loosely wrapping the hose with aluminum foil, and I still might do that. -
Re-routing turbo hoses?
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK. I didn't reroute the hoses after all. That would have taken too much time running around to get parts. So instead I fabbed a heat shield out of an old liscense plate I had laying around. This is what it looks like almost installed. I got the engine running late yesterday. Today, I still seem to have a decent case of TOD. Darn! The oil pressure has improved thuogh, and so far I don't smell any burning oil. I'm going to double check the timing, give 'er a wash, then do a freeway test drive. Maybe that will free the ticking lifter. -
While doing this, I am also replacing the coolant hoses to the turbo. Anyone re-routed the the PITA one that sits under the turbo? I'm going to try to do it. I'll let you know how it turns out. PS. Why did they use a hose there anyway? Why couldn't they have just run the tube all the way from the block, or at the very lest put the hose in a different spot?
-
The engine is out. It's a good thing I pulled it. One of the motor mounts had started to come loose from the bracket. I was hearing the noise and thought I had fried one of the main bearings when I toasted the engine. I am going to replace all the coolant and oil hoses on the turbo. I haven't pulled the flywheel yet, but I don't see any evident that the rear seal is leaking. I'll probably pull it anyway. It is always better to be safe than sorry. PS. Thanks SJ. That "Engine Stand" works like a charm.

Oh That's Classic! And I have one of those laying around. Thanks!!! PS. I bet you would have taken some serious heat if you would have use the washer or dryer for a stand.
