  1. My God! You've not finished yet!!!! The tranny has worked fine, has done us justice for the price (thanx again). The inner bearing had become noisier in the last few months, to the point where I was starting to look around for another tranny. But we took a long trip a few weeks ago, and when we got back, I realized the noise was not nearly as loud. It's still there, but now barely detectable... either that, or I'm going deaf!!!
  2. Woo Hoo!!!!! Passed with flying colors!!!! I was worried, as the 94 Alpine wagon failed and I had to replace the O2 sensor and a few other things to get it to pass.
  3. Well - you have voltage drop somewhere - could be through the switch. A bad connection will draw a bunch of amps but they are generating heat in the poor connection rather than kicking the solenoid out hard and fast. Good point. Will do some tracking this week-end. I'm still going to check the starter guts.... just because it's been a long time since I've done that. I'm due.
  4. Well it's that time again for Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag. Just changed the plugs, disty cap and crappy rotor with the hold-on screw (what a crappy design that is). Amazing how much better it runs after I do that. Gonna take it out on the freeway then go to the smog station. Wish me luck.
  5. Hey GD: I lean toward the starter brushes. If you recall, I converted my T-Wag from a crappy 3 speed AT to a 5 on the floor. I never bothered to wire in a clutch switch and bypassed that circuit instead. When turning the switch to crank, everything does dim, and volt meter on the dash does drop a point or two. showing that I do have current flow into the starter. This weekend I'm gonna pull the starter and clean the innards. Wouldn't hurt..
  6. I have the same problem. On Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag, when it happens, the solenoid clicks, but the starter motor doesn't turn. The problem occurs when you start it in the mornings. it has rarely done it during the summer. PS. Hey GD. My God. I haven't written anything here in eons.... I feel so ashamed!
  7. Ok. after reading Gloyale's post on main tranny replacement, I'm gonna try it. The worst that can happen is that I screw it up, and need to get a new tranny anyway!
  8. Gloyale... I'm gonna try it. I have a bad bearing in my tranny, and I figure the worst that could happen is I screw up, and since the original plan wa to get a new tranny, well, what have I got to lose.
  9. Gloyale... I'm gonna try it. I have a bad bearing in my tranny, and I figure the worst that could happen is I screw up, and since the original plan wa to get a new tranny, well, what have I got to lose.
  10. Well, my 5 speed AWD tranny is going out on Red, the $300 94 Alpine Wagon. When the clutch is released, there is a nice bearing noise from within the tranny case. My previous tranny started losing gears, so I bought another used for cheap (real cheap) and though it was a bit noisy upon installation, it did what it had to do, get me through the year. But it's starting to get louder, so it's time for a newer used one. Let me know if anyone has a spare here in CA. I will pick up.
  11. OK. It's not serious yet, but the old 5'er has been leaking fluid and making a klunking sound. So, I'll be on the hunt for a 5 speed for Murphy, the $500 87 Turbo-Wagon. I have the FT4WD but would like to have a 4WD high / low instead. PS. Sorry I haven't posted in so long... you know the story.... been busy!
  12. OK. Took the car to a Certified Smog Repair shop yesterday. There's good news and not so good news. The Good News: They say the O2 sensor is out, and that the injectors are clogged,. Those are easy to remedy. I'm going to get a new O2 sensor, and put some Seafoam in the tank. The Bad News: They say the front Cat is bad. How would one be able to tell if it's bad, and how would one tell if it's the front or back? I'm picking the car up from the mechanic this morning and will ask about that.
  13. Idle (682 rpm) CO2 = 13.2, O2 = 0.0, HC = 275, CO = 2.76 High RPM (2340) CO2 = 14.3, O2 = 0.7, HC = 18, CO = 0.00 I didn't buy the cat failure thing because of the great readings at high revs. But I'm not an expert on such matters. PS. Man, I haven't been on the list for quite a while. I miss you guys.
  14. Yep. The problem is at idle. Both HC's and CO are too high. Max for HC at idle should be 100 ppm, mine measures at 275 ppm. CO should be 1.00 and is at 2.76. At higher RPM, HC's are at 18, and CO is at 0 ppm. The smog guy, not a registered smog mechanic, made a guess and suggested that it could be either the O2 sensor going bad, or cats going all fail on me. I did replace the O2 sensor last winter (broke the wires on the old one, FUBAR beyond repair) but that doesn't mean it hasn't gone bad. I don't want to throw a bunch of money around trying to get this fixed, because I don't have any (God I'm getting sick of being poor). Any one delt with something similar / have any suggestions???
  15. I know. After driving Murph for the last couple of days, I can definitely say it has better acceleration, especially low end, than it's had in a very long time.
  16. No, I swapp'd the crappy 3AT for a FT4WD 5 speed. That one will have to be changed - its leaking fluid and I'd rather have the 5 speed hi lo.
  17. Now that the MAF has been replaced, Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag is running really good. Better than it has in quite a while. No more little hiccups or misfires during acceleration. BUT I'm getting a strange ECU code - .4. Yes, it's four quick flashes. Anyone seen something like this?
  18. Murphy Lives!!!! Again. Got a MAF from J-Yard. That did the trick. Now I'm noticing other codes, but I have to go to my gig tonight. I'll let you know what I find tomorrow.
  19. Test from the above manual confirm - bad MAF. No, to find one somewhere.
  20. Pulled the MAF off Murph (87 T-Wag). The wire looks intact, Anyone know how to diagnose either the unit or the circuit?
  21. Grrr! 23 is MAS, not OX sensor! Well, at least I know where the problem is.
  22. Hooray! Murph is throwing a code! 23 - OX sensor! I will double check. Then run to Kragen and get a new one (return it 'cause it's the wrong one, repeat cycle). I wonder if this is THE problem, or a byproduct of the problem?
