  1. any difference in an ea81 oil pressure sending unit and an ea82? i stuck a new one i had sittin on my shelf for an ea81 on my ea82T that i stuck in the RX.. guage reads fine (around 50 at 2k rpms) but i was curious as to any differences.. to me the original one on the old engine and the ea81 sending units looks the same.. same threads and all, lol..
  2. take tha radiator cap off, and start it.. give it a few revs.. if it blows water out like old faithful then you got a blown HG or cracked head.. compression check would be a good way to go as well.. low compression in 1 cylinder by a drastic amount would = blown HG.. could also take it in and have the coolant checked for exhaust gases..
  3. all i have to say is still gotta replace an exhaust donut and fix the oil line to the turb o (leaks) but
  4. well iwth a welded diff your not going to get any free play between the 2 rear tires.. so i'd say CV axles..
  5. well i can say that there is a noticable difference in how the rx revs, and how high it will rev.. i put a cone filter on it very nice imo.. deffinitely worth it.. now on my spfi wagon i took the airbox off and replaced it with an MRT cone style filter (made down under) its hella loud, but i didn't really notice a difference in power.. maybe a little better acceleration past 5k but not enough to make the gain offset the sound.. so its gettin a stock setup again when i do the tranny..
  6. hehe, seems its a common error we all make then at some point. lol i needa get one of them how to books.. every time i find one on ebay it gets sniped, by subaru nuts..
  7. well, i have a feeling that those autozone/shucks/advance clutches are the problem.. my 85 rx had a new clutch put in it about 15k before i bought it.. that thing slipped like a mofo.. now in my turbo wagon i bought the clutch, flywheel, and PP from the dealer.. when i got the engine outa the RX i compared the 2 side by side.. the one in the RX had half as many grooves in the disc as the one from the dealer, and was also burnt to hell.. aside from the grooves they looked the same.. when i first bought the wagon it had an AZ clutch in it and it slipped but was fairly new too.. thats why i replaced it all with OE.. so imo just from my personal experience with this issue, i'd say go buy a clutch kit from the dealer, it won't slip.. and the price diff, might be at the most $20 more, lol so far the 2wd turbo setup is working great in the RX..
  8. yeah.. although the exhaust is still hangin off, have a water leak somewhere, and, and, and... i'll get her buttoned up tonight i hope, supposed to be snowin ?!$% sad part is in a entire weekend i didn't once think that i had them wrong, lol.. ohh well live and learn.. least i got the t-belts right,
  9. i think you were closest WJM.. but dummy me didn't realize the disty turned the other way..
  10. heh.. well since noone guessed yet, i'll spill the beans.. i had the rotation of the disty backwards.... hence the #3 and 4 wires would be on backwards.. i always thought the disty turned clockwise.. so i hooked the wires up accordingly.. but i never thought that it coulda turned counterclockwise.. Skip said in his email to just humor him and switch 3 and 4 plug wires at the disty cap.. humor him i say, haha.. ok.. immediately it fired on 3 cylinders, so i drove it around the house.. let it run for a few minutes, then with a couple revs, whala all 4 and soundin good.. still has some minor tuning problems.. 2k rpm idle, small water leak somewhere.. just a few minor things.. but i feel better now.. i do really appreciate all your guys help, the fsm doesn't say anything about disty rotation.. (shame on the FSM) maybe we outa keep this post around somewhere.. alot of good ideas to check for this funky problem..
  11. Its alive! Its alive! knew skip would have the answer... car runs fine now.. just like new.. mm the sound of a turbo mmm almost forgot what it sounded like.. i'm not gonna post the answer to my problems just yet.. i wanna see if anyone can guess what it was first.. hehe
  12. swapped the IAC.. no difference.. and it wasn't stuck.. still stumped..
  13. well if a valve was stuck it wouldn't have compression.. and it does.. i also just swapped the disty, and maf.. no change.. i brought it up to TDC and reset the disty.. its perfectly in time now.. fires right up as soon as you touch the key.. but only on 1 and 2.. 3 and 4 are still not doing anything.. any other ideas folks? i'll go check the IAC now..
  14. yup.. enough spark to fry an egg on each wire.. and all injectors were replaced and switched to verify they all work.. even held them out and watched them pulse and spray fuel..
  15. i want one fo those fer my hatch, lol... only dual webers.. vroom:burnout:
  16. if water shoots out the cap like old faithful, then you got a blown HG or cracked head thats allowing compression to get into the coolant..
  17. but but but.. lol the RX we just stripped had the center diff lock switch wireing plug under the pass side seat.... the wagon i pulled this PB 5-speed out of had the same thing.. of course both had the solinoids under the hood behind the drivers side strut tower.. i was just thinking if my auto had the same thing then the PB plug would go to the same place.. under the pass side seat.. then wire in the solinoids somewhere.. but what i'm hearing is that ya wire that button into the solinoids instead? hehe forgive my lack of knowledge in this area
  18. about the 4wd switch wireing.. i am going to be doing this same tranny swap soon.. on my 88'gl 4wd wagon.. wonder if your car is my cars twin? anyways, i assume if you use a pushbutton 4wd 5-speed the 4wd pushbutton wireing will plug into where the old one was.. i already have all the parts i need to do this, just haven't done it yet.. i also snagged the instrument cluster so i can get rid of the PRDN21 on the dash.. personally i don't have to worry about the dash indicator to make the cruise work, cause i don't have cruise, hehe.. may have to do it anyways to make other things right though..
  19. so why would it be too rich in 3 and 4 and ok in 1 and 2? i swapped injectors so i know they're not bad.. maf maybe? at any rate maf and disty are gettin shanged tonight after work.. will post back again after i do that, lol.. i'm sure thats not going to fix it..
  20. yeah, did that too.. emailed skip this morning to see if he's got any ideas..
  21. ok i'll go down the list of what i did.. pulled the 87+ intake off put on my 86 intake changed a couple fuel injectors (some were cracked) resealed the water pump resealed the oil pan changed the t-belts put on my wagons old turbo (no shaft play) put on my Accell 8mm spiral core wires bought a new accell 8140 coil new plugs new cap replaced all coolant lines and vacuum lines with OE line molded at the right bends. (i pulled one off put the new one in, one at a time) flywheel (lightented by skip) clutch and PP are new from the dealer put the engine in the car, brought it to TDC put in the disty, and whala, i get a engine running on #1 and #2.. thats it.. now the list of what i've done.. tore the timing down twice and quadruple checked it.. also scrapdaddy tatum checked it too to make sure the t-belts were set properly.. (they are) i've swapped injectors checked for ecu codes (none) unbolted the exhaust after the DP (now it will idle on 2 cylinders) checked all my connections (all good) verified all vacuu mlines are hooked up as they should be (yes) swapped injector wires to make sure the harness is working (yes it is) made sure the plug wires are on the right cylinder and the fireing order is correct (1-3-2-4) did a compression check (123-130 all the way around) made sure its getting spark (enough juice to go through one arm and out the other.. along with nice blue spark with the new coil) after i got frustrated, i pulled the disty and put it in every tooth, just to make sure.. didn't help.. the car will sit there and idle all day long on 2 cylinders.. hell in 4 low i can drive it around the yard.. but thats about it.. at this point, i have to swap the disty, swap the maf.. all the parts that i used on this car (sensors, wireing, intake) all came off the old engine, which ran fine besides the blown HG. so i have no reason to believe they have some thing wrong with them.. i ran the old engine before pullin the motor out... plugs in 1 and 2 look tan colored.. plugs in 3 and 4 look darker, almost black.. they don't smell odd in any way and are not gummed up (new plugs lol) hmm knock sensor... i did unplug it and it made no difference in how the car was running.. although i doubt its going to do much when its not runnin on all 4...
  22. ahh, no vacuum leaks.. been on top of, under, and all around it several times.. can't swap plug wires.. but i can pull plug wires and/or fuel injector wires off #3 and 4 and it makes no difference.. so its running on 1 and 2 right now.. idles at 1k no prob. revs up.. just not on all 4...
  23. alright.. will try that again.. done it several times already.. i also thoguht maybe my disty is hosed, so i grabbed the original one that came with the car when i bought it.. also snagged my original maf as well.. gonna try that stuff tomorrow after work..
  24. ignition pulse.. only when engine is off.. so that one is normal...
  25. been through the fsm 50 times.. the car gives me a long and 2 short blinks with the key on, and when its running it doesn't give anything... hmm wonder how hard it'll be to find another ecu for an 85' rx sedan.. haha
