Rebuild or toss - EA81 ???????
Meeky Moose replied to mcbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well i have one that was supposedly a new shortblock.. with like 18k on it.. rod knocks like a mofo.. but i kept it.. i figure i can put a new crank in it, new bearings, and have a good spare for my little hatch.. i also have (word of mouth) good ea81 block, crank, pistons, rings here.. supposedly it just blew a HG so it was pulel dout and replaced.. i'd say keep it, crack it open, replace what needs replaced, and put it together for a spare.. -
:boohoo: looks like most of ya got yours, but me..:boohoo: damn slow usps/ups/fedex here in VA..

ea82T Compression/Head Gasket Question?
Meeky Moose replied to dave833's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
my rx did the same thing... drove it home, was fine.. parked it.. it sat for a few hours.. then i went to start it and it had a mis .. checked everything.. and figured out it was a head gasket.. i ran it for a few minutes and it started blowin water out the tail pipe.. so you prolly have a blown HG.. sorry my friend.. -

well heres what i just bought from importedcarparts.com camshaft seal kit (2) front and rear crankshaft seals intake manifold gaskets (2) oil drain plug gasket oil pump gasket oil pump seals (3) t-belt tentioner springs (2) both timing belts (Goodyear) valve cover gasket set water manifold gaskets (2) water pump gasket exhaust flange gasket turbo outlet gasket turbo inlet gasket(2) pcv valve upper and lower radiator hoses thermostat gasket water pipe o-ring free shipping and was only $137.74 figure this is everything i need (minus the HG's) to reseal my entire ea82T plus some... it won't be leakin when i get it in me car.. i had a shop in oregon do the timing belts, oil pump, cam seals, crank seal, etc. everything on teh front of the engine for $300.. and this was on an XT6... so me think the $425 is a bit high.. valve cover replacement doesn't sound too bad though..

well scrapdaddytatum put an engine together for a guy awhile back.. overtorqued the head bolts by 3 or 4 lbs.. never retorqued.. cars been driven a good 5k overheated so bad it blew the radiator and hoses.. and guess what.. the headgaskets are still as good as new.. no leakage, nothing.. so if it can survive an overheat that bad, i'd say overtorque a little and forget about it.. did this on my acura too, everyone said don't reuse the bolts.. bah i said, i overtorqued them by 4lbs.. drove it 4k before it was wrecked.. no problem.. lady that bought it is still drivin it aboud.. i imagine she's put a good 4k on it as well... just my .02

t-belt covers: yay or nay
Meeky Moose replied to nutt7's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ran me turbo wagon myself for 16k without t-belt covers.. and the previous owner (from this board) ran it for 30k like that and they were still holding.. i'd say if you just drove around on pavement all teh time its fine, but if your going mud boggin or somethin put the covers on.. my wagon was 2wd so i couldn't go bogging, lol.. -

Meeky Moose replied to Subafly's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
heh, me check still hasn't gone through yet.. just wonderin whats the status on these.. -
well the biggest flaw in your plan is this... EA82T engines were not SPFI they were MPFI (multiport fuel injected) turbo heads are different than the SPFI heads.. you can however put turbo heads on a SPFI block.. but you'll also need fuel rails, intake manifold, fuel injectors wireing harness and ecu from a turbo car. theres prolly other things i left out as well.. this swap can be done, but for all the time and money it'll cost you to round up all those parts, you might as well buy a turbo car..
-
i'm sure if the trailer is not too incredibly big and heavy a soob would pull just fine.. keep an eye on the temps though
-
just wondering if there are any differences between the 86 ea82T intake manifold and the 87+ intake manifolds?

High performance crossover pipe
Meeky Moose replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Blizzaks have more grip than any other street tire on any kind of pavement.. slicks have more grip on dry pavement than blizzaks, but until you've driven blizzaks you just spin and slide if i had the extra $$ to toss your way i'd take one of them crossover pipes.. already have a custom downpipe comin to me
