reffering to the 3at in my 88 gl wagon.. got another good governor in it.. the 1-2 shift is real sloppy.. doesn't rev up between those gears, but it just seems like its slipping into 2nd.. then to get it to shift to 3rd you gotta stomp on it.. think this is a funky modulator? wanna get opinions before i go buy one..

i know on every auto matic vehicle i have ever driven, if you put it in 1st, it will shift when either the sensors on the tranny or ecu tell it that its too high of rpms for that gear.. thats a safety feature built into 99% of auto trannies.. keeps people from blowin the car up.. although my 3at didn't shift even at redline when it was put into 1st gear manually.. i also know the old xt6 i had would shift if you pushed it hard enough.. and the trans temp light only came on once.. goin up a 12,000 ft pass with over 1500lbs loaded on the car (including 2 people).. this was prolly because it was so loaded the car didn't have enough power to get out of first gear, lol 10mph max speed (got passed by a geo).. let it cool off and it was fine..

sorry to disagree with ya here on the synthetic and the rislone.. that combination may be good.. but from personal experience with a subaru wagon (ea82T) i think synthetic is a waste in these engines, especially since they like to leak.. me old wagon had 290k original.. always had castrol 10w40/20w50 mix with 1/4 bottle MMO in it.. it never ticked, and only used at the most a quart between oil changes.. was prolly leaking it cause it never smoked either.. in fact i still have the motor sitting here in the shop.. engines still purrs like a kitten (but prolly needs headgaskets) anyways.. thats just my .02 and personal experience.. 290k original on an ea82T says alot..

bah, i need to move back to the ashland/medford area... used to have a ton-o-fun.. need to find a job there first tho.. always had my trucks/4wd's out at white city ponds, gettin stuck or laughin at my buddies gettin stuck, lol.. if i'da been into soobs like i am now and knew you all i prolly woulda stayed there -
heres an older post with lots of part #'s of what you need it explains more than i can.. oil pump thread
-
ticking, the all time subaru question.. most of the time the ticking is caused by the o-rings in the oil pump gone bad.. the o-ring kit can be bought at napa for under $10.. now as far as oil goes, i always run castrol gtx 10w40 or 20w50 depending on which car and the mileage.. and 1/4 bottle of MMO i also only use purolator pure one oil filters.. if your ticking never stops no matter if the engine is warm or cold, i would say your oil pump needs some new o-rings.. pretty easy fix really..

the one by the pump has 3 hoses that attack to it, the one under the hood has 2.. personally i got both of mine from advance for like $6.. -
yup i meant all of it
-
well that sucks.. but personally thats the reason i leave my trailer hithes sticking out the back.. so a tailgater gets whats comin if they aren't payin attention.(not implying anything here) my wife totaled our van.. it was her fault.. but it didn't raise my rates one bit.. and my renewal came the other day, and the policy was about $500 cheaper this time around.. go figure. lol..

naw, i'm thinkin someone had it flushed at a spiffy lube and it got screwed up.. there is 0 gear oil in there. like its been drained and refilled with atf.. and its full to the mark, same with the trans.. fluid is real new as well, cause it smells new, and looks new.. at any rate, i'll keep the seal in mind, just incase it fills up with tranny fuild again, lol.. -
3at 4wd tranny question..
Meeky Moose replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well, it doesn't make any funny noises, and i know the 4wd works like it should.. so i'm hopin theres no real damage besides the governor.. the guy i bought it from said he was drivin along, pulled up to a light, and poof, no more 3rd gear.. he didn't say if he had anything flushed. but the atf doesn't look or smell very old, acctually looks pretty new.. so it couldn't have been in there too long.. time to flush the front diff, and get this wagon on the road. heh.. -
since ya prolly saw the other post i'll cut to the chase.. the trans is supposed to have atf in it? (duh) the front diff should have what? atf or 80w90? think i figured out why it ate the governor... the front diff is full of atf, not a drop of 80w90..

nope, guess i need to check.. thanks for the tips.. maybe thats why it cored like it did.. if your moms did the same thing.. gotta check the front diff now.. cross my fingers and hope thats it.. -
lots of loyale engine noise.
Meeky Moose replied to james's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i place my bets on the oil pump o-rings... when they wear out this allows air to be sucked into the oil flow, thus making the lifters not "pump up" it will cause a ticking sound.. -
