  1. ohh and if ya wanna talk mileage, the ford gets 12mpg.. the little junkyard hatch with 200K on it went 140 miles on 3 gallons of gas.. believe that one or not.. hard for me to believe but it did.. for subarubrat: it went from ruckersville to manassas and back on 1/4 tank.. lol i think thats like what 40mpg?
  2. well i have to side with the ole ford sittin in the driveway .. its got more than 400 HP its got pushrods, and it'll spank any wrx that steps up.. haha.. so timing belts or not, it just depends on how big the engine is.. the 4cylinders are easier to design small, get lots of hp/rpm's with timing belts... so show me a big v8,10,12 whatever that has timing belts.. ya won't find it...
  3. your coolant issue... there is a tiny coolant line that runs from the intake manifold to the thermostat housing.. its about 1/4" in diameter.. they like to spring leaks in the form of pinholes.. you can't see the hole until the hose is off, and most of the time won't leak unless they either completely blow or you rev it up (3500 rpms or so) it'll be on the right side of the thermostat housing down low and runs under the intake manifold if i remember correctly.. check it first.. its always the first one that goes.. you can replace it with regular fuel line from a parts store.. that way it saves ya a littel bit of $$ vs going to the dealer for the hose..
  4. yeah skip brat has the custom x-pipe and dual out the back.. saw it this last sat. sounds like a freekin v8.. has the rumble and the looks.. i gotta do somethin with my hatch.. just had a new centerpipe/cat put on it, but the muffler is shot.. i want something a little louder and less restrictive in its place..
  5. ahh the things i forgot.. gotta bow to the subaru master hehe..
  6. well i might be up for it.. dunno yet as may is a long time away.. this post doesn't look like the right one though.. the RX should be runnin and ready to go by then.. maybe i can convoy up with a couple local guys here as well...
  7. for a wagon and ease of use for the wife i would say any 85-89 gl or gl-10 wagon... fuel injected of course.. they are roomy inside for campin ahulin kids etc.. and are pretty tough little cars.. now if you want offroading capability you need one of these: for offroadin in my .02 i'd say get an 80-84 wagon or hatchback.. no timing belts to get mud into, etc.. and you can use a weber
  8. if ya want to change the tranny, i would say yank the hole thing out.. engine and trans.. this allows you to put the engine back together much easier.. you'll need a transmission, flywheel, clutch, pressureplate, pedal assembly (inside) clutch cable, and all of the shift linkage and shifter.. when ya get a transmission make sure it is the same gear ratio as the rear end or you'll have problems.. the rear end gear ration can be seen by lookin under the back of the car at the rearend. there will be a sticker on it that says "3.70 or 3.90 or 3.70 LSD or 3.90 LSD". the LSD stands for limited slip differential. if it doesn't say lsd its an open rear end.. by looking at the pic of the car its prolly an LSD. important part is to make sure the trans you put in is the same gear ratio.. good score too btw.. looks like a keeper..
  9. a lady that works across the hall from me bought an 02" forester brand new... its got about 36k on it now and she's been very happy.. nothing has gone wrong with it yet..
  10. i'd check to see if there was a thermostat in it.. being 2 degres outside and not having a thermostat will cause the cold air as well.. as for dieing, check the fuel pump and filter..
  11. i'm gettin my custom down/upipe from Skip.. he does beautiful work
  12. on our little trip up north yesterday, we found an 85 or 86 RX sedan with 49k on the ticker looks like its sat since 98' 4 flat tires, dirty, paint is goin fast, clear coats gone and surface rust looks like its just starting on the top of it.. no rust underneath, in teh fenderwells, anywhere, no other rust at all.. interior was nice, not ripped, looked plush still, stereo had been taken out and was layin on the floor.. it was grey, h-alloys, RX decals, and rear trunklip.. looked identical to mine.. no clue what was wrong with it.. but is deffinitely worth savin.. its a perfect candidate to sand off and paint any color ya want... the paint was the worst part about it.. got pick of the sign out front with the #.. gotta call in the near future and see what the deal is.. maybe haul it off for free
  13. takin my stock one to skip today.. maybe he can wiegh it before he lightens it.. will report back after this 14 hour trip today, lol
  14. well my 89' ea81 hatch has who knows what in it.. no tag on the valve covers sayin don't adjust valve lash.. and from what i can tell it is the original motor.. all i can say is its a dog.. lol it'll be a ea82 turbo hatch this summer though..
  15. sounds about what mine looked like really... your cracked valve seat or somthing might have progressed a little farther than mine has.. i'd clean the threads in the head on that cylinder real good.. and give that a shot... maybe even try the new plug from #2 in #1.. might have a bad plug even though its new.. in any case, your problems might be what i'm looking at in the future if its the same thing.. which it sounds like it is.. i'm thinkin about doin an ea82T transplant into mine this summer tho have all the parts to do it really...
  16. when i got ole Junky from the scrap yard she ran on 3 cylinders.. but at first glance i knew it was plugs because they were rusty.. 3 plugs were burning normally.. the 4th on #1 was black and oil covered.. very fouled.. so i changed all the plugs, and she runs like new.. but you already got new plugs.. i'm still wondering why mine was gooey with oil.. am thinkin she might have a valve issue as well, but she doesn't smoke, miss, nothing.. i did have to add half a quart of oil since i got her (1500 miles ago) but shes got 199,500 somthing on her and looks original.. going to take a pic when she his 200k even.. let us know what ya find out.. would be interesting to know.. how'd your old plugs look when they came out?
  17. on your oil leaks.. i would say if its not gushing out and leaving big puddles everywhere you drive, its not going to hurt anything.. the little oil seep you speak of is quite normal on just ab out every subaru i have seen.. if its got high miles then i would say its going to leak a little bit of oil.. or have seeping.. if your oil level is staying pretty close to the same between changes and your not having to add more than a 1/2 qt.. its really not worth the bother in replacing the gaskets in my opinion.. changing the pcv valve would be another good start if you don't know when it was last changed.. also a complete tune up (plugs, wires, gas/air filters, etc.. as stated above) would help narrow down the stalling and irratic idle issue..
  18. yeah i have one of those square sears jobbers.. mine hooks to the car by adjustable straps with clamps on the end.. it fit well.. we had it on the top of an xt6 and drove from oregon to virginia.. it stayed put held all kinds of stuff and we still got close to 30mpg .. best part was when i bought it i went to napa cause they had some on the wall.. i asked him and the guy said they had to order them.. i didn't wanna do that but another customer said hey i got one of those i need to sell.. so i said alright, we went to his house and he dug it out and said "we took this to alaska and back on our jeep once.. hows $30 sound?" i said heck yeah and whipped out the green.. best $30 i ever spent, lol... it does collect bugs real easy though.
  19. and he's half ways across the country. haha..:-p
  20. i have my new (16k mile) flywheel off the ole turbo wagon.. its going to get lightened but i can wiegh it for ya before it gets worked.. its outa a 2wd but its the same as the 4wd turbo ea82 flywheel.. i also have the clutch and PP as well.. all new from the dealer 16k ago.. i could also wieght the hole shootin match as well.. now to find a scale... haha maybe scrapdaddytatum has one i can use for this..
  21. i agree with ya on the coca-cola.. that stuff will free a siezed engine if left in teh cylinders all night, lol.. think what it does to your inards..
  22. lol, no, but the cat sure liked them.... i know where to look next time..
  23. yeah.. i'll get to brag more when it becomes an ea82 turbo hatch
  24. well i found the keys, the damn cat took them and stuck'em in his food dish, then buried them.. i went to feed him, and noticed the little plastic card i have on my ring stickin out of his food.. so alls well again.. thanks all
  25. this little junkyard hatch surprized me this morning on the way to work.. i got a wild hair up my you know what and decided to drive it without the clutch (except for starting out from a stop) the thing shifts and downshifts through every gear without the clutch, no grinding, just a smooth shift.. this thing gets better everyday.. hehe sorry for the rant..
