Thanks guys! Yeah, I am wanting to do the OEM deal - NAPA stopped selling the aftermarket CC's a long time ago because they were pretty sketchy, so I am leery of getting one, esp. if JC Whitney has anything to do with it! Alldata listed a part number for a kit from Sub to put cruise in at the dealer back in 1988. Man, I hope it doesn't require harness replacement!

What kind of hose did you get at Advanced? A preformed heater hose? If so, it will get eaten up by the petroleum fumes very soon and melt. Go to Subaru or the junkyard and get the right one SOON!
-
You should check and see if the dealer will cover the repair - sounds like recall time to me!
-
Just curious: Has anyone put cruise into their vehicle that didn't originally come with it? What components are necessary to get from the boneyard?
-
You snowboys should see it: Snow in the Willamette valley turned to ice - Subaru wonderland! Just have to watch out for people who can't drive!

A cold day in the wrecking yard is much better than a warm day at work!

More than likely it's the fan - they wear out after a few decades.

water pump, or no?,83 GL WAGON
Partsman replied to tompalushock's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If it sounds like the water pump, then it probably is the water pump. Imminent bearing failure won't cause temp readings to go up - just noises. Pump is $35 new, $22 reman at NAPA. -
I use NAPA (Valvoline in a cheaper wrapper) 10W30 in my EA82 - don't like to use the thicker stuff in small engines. You get a little better mileage with the thinner oil, too!
-
233K 50K on second engine - first engine was changed by my Dad because it leaked oil - of course, this one leaks oil too:D ! So I have a parts EA82 available.

Mickey Mouse is NAPA/Victor # B45702 Pump seal is NAPA/CR #7205 For the other O-ring, all I see is the kit mentioned earlier by Flow that has it all - Beck-Arnley #039-6320 - NAPA sells as well. If you want to do the crank and cam seals, the best seals NAPA sells are in the timing cover gasket set NAPA/Victor JV-1028 - it also has the rubber timing cover gaskets, the oil pump seal, and a couple of thin seals I can't identify

Getting off a stripped brake line
Partsman replied to benebob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Is it a piece of line with inverted flare fittings on each end? You can buy a straight piece of line at NAPA and bend it to match. Or is it something SPECIAL? -
batteries and chargers

By the way, what is "jacking the SOA battery?" Partsman -
batteries and chargers
Partsman replied to subiemech85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well actually - A fully charged battery has appx. 12.75 volts. A battery at 12 volts is almost fully discharged! Your charger should put out in the range of 14.4 to 14.8 volts to be running most efficiently - not sure about the little 1A chargers, they may run differently. If you cycle your battery between charged and fully discharged very many times, it will go bad prematurely. Vehicle starting batteries are designed to start the vehicle (duh!) and then be recharged back to full by the alternator. This is why guys with Big Arse Stereos eat batteries. Hope this helps! super ultimate hp gain ground wire?
Partsman replied to archemitis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's the "handling" charge that gets you - since the guy charges $90/hr for his time - must be a lawyer or a dealership mekanik! Partsman 88 GL wagon 5spd D/R -
Like I said, find a parts guy who is willing to actually work to find you the right parts (who DOESN'T think he knows it all) and stick with him! Partsman (who doesn't know s**t, but is willing to look!)

suggestions for new clutch
Partsman replied to MaroonDuneDoom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On the subject of lifetime warranties: Here's the deal. Nobody is going to offer you a lifetime warranty on a clutch against anything you can do to it. If you install it and run it at slipping until it tears all the lining off your parts store will probably laugh in your face. Nor are they going to warranty it against wearing out if you drive normally and need a new one in 100,000 miles (or whatever). Clutches are DESIGNED to wear! The lifetime warranty is against manufacturer defects - like a bad spring, etc. The other way you can get caught, even on a legitimate warranty, is if you don't retain your receipt. KEEP ALL RECEIPTS! NAPA's warranty is 12 months on clutches BTW Partsman 88 Subaru GL wagon 5spd D/R -
GD - Yeah, the guys that code in "per car" amounts sometimes mess up. If I flip the screen to Beck-Arnley bearings, or if I pull out the bearing paper catalog there is a specific message that it takes two bearings per side; plus I know by having done the job (what an annoying sound when one goes bad!) My best advice is to find a parts person who you trust that is willing to go beyond "that's what my computer tells me, so it must be right." From what I have heard from customers who come in to me cussing about getting the wrong parts down the street, I think NAPA has the best cataloging in the aftermarket. QMan - You mean to tell me that if you put in my NAPA PCV valve into your car that is in good condition, that it will start sucking oil? Do you actually have experience with this? If so, I'll get mine at Subaru too! Partsman 88 GL wagon 5spd SPFI D/R

NAPA part# 2-9254 - we sell it for $4.99 here. What's with the hostility towards NAPA? Jeez, as long as you give me the right info, I'll come up with the right part for you at this store! Partsman 88 GL wagon 5sp SPFI

I like Lucas for noisy pumps (shuts up old Ford pumps immediately) and SMALL seal leaks. Partsman 88 GL wagon SPFI 5sp

HEY! Can anybody tell me real quick where the pcv valve is located on an 83 GL 1800 wagon? I looked at this vehicle with my customer and can't see it. Partsman (not MechanicMan)

"Bushes" means bushings, as in the bushings that keep the shaft tight in the housing. They are soft so they wear out instead of the shaft. He probably has more time than money and isn't afraid of getting a little greasy! Partsman
