(1997 Subaru Legacy Wagon) The front wheel bearing seal with the rubber lip, does it go on the transmission side of hub or the wheel side? Last year the one I took apart was on the wheel side, last weeken with help from someone we found the seal on the other front hub with the rubber lip on the transmission side. Both of these hubs had been done in the past by other shops, so someone put one in wrong. Which is correct?

The # 1 is the front left as you face the engine from the front. Use a compression gauge to find when it is up on compression, then when you remove the front covers you will turn the crank just a little to line the marks, this will put the pistons in the center of engine so then you will be able to turn that right cam pully around a complete turn cockwise if you lose your mark. The cam is always right when the mark is lined up. As far as taking the crank pully off I use the big chain wrench from Harbor Freight to hold it while removing the bolt. Then you must wiggle it off and you may need to use a small screwdriver to help but go easy. Make sure you do not use the arrow on the crank spocket for the timing mark, the timing mark will be the line that is on one of the spocket tabs. Also If you do not have a Haynes manuel get you one I done my first timing belt job with only that information.

Give junk yard dog a chance, it is a place you post what you need and it goes out on the web to many yards and the ones that have what you are hunting will get back to you by e-mail with details, You should get back seven or eight offers on a transmission if you post there. Just make sure to check them out with the B.B.B. before buying.

I got a transmission for a 97 Legacy wagon from Landry's in NH. for around 300.00 dollars I think it was 275.00 but it has been a while back, and it cost another 125.00 dollars to have it shipped from NH. to TX. by truck freight, and they will line that up for you. I do remember the whole transaction was under 500.00 dollars. Their number is 800-332-4937 and I checked them out with the B.B.B. before ordering and they checked out with no compaints in the last three years. The transmission is still working fine. The job is easy except for the torque converter bolts, they are a bit tough. You will also have to remove exhaust, but some of this is connected with hangers so it is easy. The job took me and one other person around nine hours, but this included replacing one of the wheel bearing also.

I am glad you got your disabilty, it is not easy my brother spent a long time getting his and he needed it much sooner then he got it. The Post Office gave me 45 days contentian of pay which ends this Friday, and then I get switched to workers comp. which they say will be 75 percent of pay tax free. I have to go back to Dr. next Tuesday and I think he will put me back on light duty for at least a half day, so that will cut the workers comp. pay in half. -
Go for it. If the bolts or rusted it may be nice to have air and impact. It is very easy to change the spindle and hub out with a used one. I have only been doing my own for a few years, but with the help I got here and the Haynes manuel I found it very easy. The front left axle will be easy to remove after getting the hub off, just knock the little pin out on the engine side of axle, the other side is a little bit harder because of the exhast. Of course it helps is you have another car to drive while you are doing this.

My wife, does a small Aux. Rt. in the same office as me, so she is now carrying my route, along with being my my nurse, cook, and house cleaner so she is very busy. They are in the process of getting someone on loan from another office to help out. I dont know if I could ever watch Opra, I just dont care for her or Dr. Phil. I have began to like Little House On The Prairie, I never got to see it when it was first on becaused I worked nights. I am also in the process of fighting Best Buy in small claims court, we had an extended warrany on a washer and dryer and after 45 days of trying to get the dryer fixed I gave up and hired someone else to fix it. So I am now trying to get my 149.00 dollars for the warrany returned along with the 72.00 dollars it cost to file it. Win or lose I think this one is worth the fight. -

Thanks for asking, I am getting better, I have been able to get out of the house and go to Wal Mart, thanks to the little scotter they provide. I still have to use the walker or cruches because the Dr. dont want me to put any weight on it for twelve weeks. So I have around six more weeks to go. -

Thanks, I should be able to find it. -
If you put new struts in the old springs, make sure you mark the orination of the spring to the top hat with paint marker before taking it apart. It does matter and I had to take take mine back out to straighten it. If I remember right I think the two small holes in the top hat face to outside of tire.
