Why don't we do like the rest of the southern subarus and meet somewhere around the Dragon in Deals Gap, NC? It's right on the TN/NC border and not that far from GA. All the peoples from Nasioc have a big Subaru meet there around Memorial day. I know there are some trail/gravel runs, they aren't too extreme since they run Foresters and Imprezas on it, but it could be fun. I went last year and had a good time though I was driving my '05 RS at the time. I know a guy who organizes it, he'd know more about the trail stuff. I can find out if you guys like. I'd really be down for a SE meet, not a lot of us around, that drive the old stuff anyway.

Since my hatch is a total stripper from the factory, it seems like it was destined to be a racer. I've been looking for some Rally X events in the surrounding states but have yet to find any. Just wondering if anyone out there is running rally cross and have an tip or infoo on sanctioning bodies and the like.

and it's awful nice to be able to have a very capable off road rig for less than $2k total. You can't knock the weight difference either, I once helped free a Disco that had sunk up in clay with freebie EA81 wagon that rode right on top of it.

Brat Jump Seat Removal?
GoldDiggerRoo replied to GoldDiggerRoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm gonna set them on fire and dance around in a circle, cause I'm crazy like that. Not really, I'll likely be selling them at some point in the near future. -
gen 1 jumpseats into a gen 2??
GoldDiggerRoo replied to 75subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I can measure the Gen 1 headrest bracket/slider tomorrow if you want. I've got 'em out in the car. I suppose you could move the lower brackets up a little if they were shorter, if you were a person who was planning on painting their Brat, or just didn't care.. I think the seats themselves are the same. -
Brat Jump Seat Removal?
GoldDiggerRoo replied to GoldDiggerRoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Cool, hopefully it'll stop raining at some point so I can try and get 'em out. -
Can anyone tell me where all the bolts are on the Brat jump seats so I can take 'em out. I see two bolts/flathead screws per seat on the bottom front of them (where legs would be), where are the others? Also are these actually screws or are they bolts and if so what size? Thanks

got my new 1980 Brat

What kind of noise? A clicky clacky popping noise or something else? Clicky clacky pop is likely to be axel/cv , if that's the case you'll here it primarily on acceleration and turning, but should be fairly quiet otherwise. If it's something else it could be brake/bearing/hub related. The hubs going out on these is common (for me) I had to replace the drivers side front hub on my '79 brat when I bought it. If it's anything other than an cv, let me know... I'm parting one out. -
Here's my trick for turning those grey EA81 4WD bumpers black again, like they're supposed to be. I've done this on several cars and noticed that it usually works a little better if you clean the bumper with WD-40 really good a day or so before. You can either spray hWD right onto the bumper and wipe it in or spray some onto a rag and rub it on, but I've found that spraying it right on works better due to the texture of the bumper. My next secret weapon: Mother's Back To Black: Remeber to SHAKE WELL and the pour a little onto a terry cloth rag or an old towel, the directions on the bottle say a "quarter sized" drop, but you can feel free to use more, it'll take a lot. Then take the rag and rub the B2B in with a circular motion. The directions also say wait until the product dries to a hase to remove it (like wax) but if your bumpers are anything like mine, you're gonna need 2/3 or more coats of this stuff....so on the first couple coats, it's going to be soaking in more than drying, I'd wait 30/45 seconds and then remove it with a clean cloth again using a circular motion. You do have to be paitent with this stuff, it's sometimes uneven looking, but most of these bumpers have had no treatment for 20+ years. After a good rain some of the grey will come back, but even this eventually will go away with continued treatment (once a month, every other month). Here's a few pics from my '87 Hatch, you can tell a major difference. Good luck! Before: During: After:

No pics of the wagon yet, but I'll hopefully get a gander at it this week, he was driving the wagon until a few years ago, so it's faired a little better though it is said to be rusty and beat up..... that just means it's a Subaru to me. I will likely keep the shifter it looks like the handle is JB Welded onto the stick, so it's gonna remain a Gen 1 part forever, I may stick it on the wagon. I had a T handle on my Brat, which Andrew hated, so it's on the hatch now. It's been in every manual trans Sube I've ever owned. When I saw the one in the Brat, I knew it was meant to be. As for the seats, we might be able to work something out, let me know what you're thinking. I've stared a thread in the For Sale section for the other parts, this thing has some really nice stuff on it. -

Well it appears this Brat is gonna be a parts Brat, it's not in terrible shape other than the fenders, but it's missing the radiator and since the trans is messed up, I'm just gonna part it out, speak up now if you need parts, cause I got lotsa nice ones! Oh, and turns out the missing suspension and axel were there, just inside the truck. I am also getting the '78 Wagon which is apparently more together, not sure what I'm gonna need from the Brat, but I'll know soon. This Brat was orginally bright red, not the maroon it is now. Pics! more here:http://s13.photobucket.com/albums/a270/Silverbullet25RS/Parts%20Brat/ -

Going to go dig it out and check out what it needs to roll shortly, hopefully before it rains. Pics to come! Oh I forgot, it's even still for all the mud flaps on it too! -
I would be shocked if it wasn't. Sure sounds like the symptoms I've dealt with in the bad HG department.

The Gen 1's also just pull off, been there, done that.

Rust! Break it to me gently.

It should be no big deal to make and weld on a cap for that, undercoat it and you'll never know it was there. -
Well today was a pretty nice day and since I washed my hatch last night and it's supposed to rain tomorrow I decided to go out crusing the back roads with my cousin looking for old cars and whatever else we could see. After going up and down dirt roads for about an hour we decided to head back home, but not after making a pass down one last road. So we start down the road and I see a familiar car, my dads fugly caddy sitting at a friend of his house, so I stop to say hi and show my cousin this guys "collection" This guy is a unique breed, he's in his early 50's, retired, but all of his life he's bought stuff..... doesn't matter what it is, if he gets a deal on it he'll buy it. He has everything from front porches removed from houses to conveyor belt systems and those nifty three wheel carts that traffic cops drive. After chatting for a bit we decide to venture out amongnst the stuff to have a look at the oddball stuff he has. About half way through our self guided tour I see something I recognize, as I walk up on it realize it's a Brat.... a gen 1 GL Brat! What's weird is I actually remember this Brat and completely forgot about it. It used to be a parts delivery vehicle for a local junk yard so it's got crazy decals all over it (I remembered that part), I saw it maybe 10 years ago but it apparently didn't stick what it was. Anyway, I casually bring up wanting to buy it, and we discuss price... I won't say here.... but it was well priced. So here's the good and the bad: The good: It's a GL, round gauges and all that good stuff (couldn't see inside) It's not terrible rusty from what I can see It's got a camper top (it extends onto the roof?) It apparently still has the seats and headrests. The Bad: Hasn't run in a few years (not really an issue, I can make it run) It may or may not have a title (forgot to ask) It is missing part of the right rear suspension/brakes and axel 3rd gear is apparently out in it I'm gonna go tomorrow and try to relieve it from the bushes it's sitting in and inspect what exactly is missing in the rear. I know there is no axel, but I can't tell if the suspension is there, it may be sunk up and underground. The best part....... he's got a complete '78 Wagon I'm gonna talk to him about too. Never though I'd get another Sube' today when I woke up this morning, you never know!

Gasoline smell, and a strange sputter...
GoldDiggerRoo replied to daeron's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My car seems to be doing something similar, it wants to sputter really bad when you're barely on the gas (crusing position mostly) but if you're all off or giving it more than that it's ok. My problem is being caused by the choke sticking on, car is fine when it's not, but has that issue when it's on and warmed up. Not sure what'd you do about it on a fulie car, but sounds like the same symptoms.
