  1. update! been driving for 50 km tank still reads full! Does any body know firmware here ? What is the newest firmware you gan get in an 06 and what are the features ? Can somebody explain the difference between a re-flash and the normal resetting of error codes?
  2. In your final questions you brought up several issues. I am currently driving an 06 impreza wagon and I find it handles extremely well. I find that careful attention to tire pressure is all that is necessary. Too much is as bad as too little. Personally I go for the factory 33/30 in the winter with my snow tires and in the sumer with the stock brigstones I go 35/32. Maybe there are alignment issues with yours? Recently I had the firmware re flashed and that seemed to cure the transmission from hunting. It has smoothed out the car and has perked up the throttle response. (even my wife noticed) In regard to the 97 It would seem that you were lucky to find out about the head gaskets before any permanent damage was done and that the fix should be good.
  3. Not sure but if you really like it get it serviced properly. My guess is it probably has never been done. Hesitation can be from idle stabilization ( low idle ) or from electrical ( plugs coil wires etc ).
  4. The internal low friction nature of the subaru engine is cool idling. So yes that is what a subaru does it cools off rapidly. Why you are overheating under these circumstances,I can't say. I can feel the loss of heat imediately when I sit idling, I have to turn up the heat. Sounds like you did everything you could think of to chill the engine. This might open up head gasket leaks I don't know? Try same test only this time leave it in 2nd or even first gear but not in neutral. Why people don't avail themselves to engine braking I don't know.
  5. After a couple of days I can report more on the new re flash. Almost perfect even boring smoothness, transmission guessing is way down. More torque converter fanning so less sluggishness. but it is fanning (500 rpm (guess) or so and then just locking up invisibly. This gives the desired result. Shift transitions are smoother. I heard when I got the car that the 4eat was good for a conventional automatic. And now I believe it. It's like the computer now knows that your driving an automatic and will now behave accordingly. Engine is dead quiet even when started at - 10C

  7. It started with me noticing lousy fuel economy on my last tankful. Then a few days later I noticed when it was cold/damp it stumbled. The next day It stumbled again and this time the check engine light came on. Next day the dealer read the code and reported a misfire on cylinder 2. I was told that the most likely cause was # 2 wire but that it might also be the coil. I had #2 wire replaced and the firmware re-flashed. $150 Canadian I couldn't get any specific info as to what the latest firmware would do but I was told that if there was new firmware it would automatically be installed. So far this is a fix! and the car is running smoother than I can remember. I feel that everything from the fuel mapping to the shift points has changed. The auto is super smooth, really pretty civilized if you consider it's all wheel drive. I wasn't sure but my wife noticed this improved smoothness, linearity, and throttle control also. If I'm not on cheap drugs this is something I would definitely recommend. David
  8. I find that the 2.5i in our impreza runs fine on regular. But it runs smoother and has more power with mid-grade. For the last couple of months I have been biting the bullet and buying mid-grade as I feel that the car actually runs better.
  9. Got the brake fluid flushed, the pcv valve replaced and the oil changed. At 56000 Km/ 35000 miles I still had almost half of the life in my front pads, the rears however were wearing on an angle, thinning on one edge. The rotors front and back are pristine. I changed all four pads. I decided that new pads on the back necessitated new pads on the front. Anyhow I was amazed that the new pads went on just like I thought they would without machining. My questions are: 1 Can you change only the rear pads safely? 2 What caused my rear pads to wear at an angle ? is this normal. 3 What might be the maximum number of pad changes one rotor set might see?
  10. I started thinking about lightweight trailers and found this. Surely one could tow this? I myself would also always opt for the optional trailer brakes if there are ones for these. Anyhow neat eh? http://www.golittleguy.com/teardrops/models/4-wide-econ/
  11. Looks like a camry crossed with a masda. Sad but it's how all the new cars look. Who said roger rabbit wasn't an influential movie. I'm more concerned with the fact that toyota is gradually steam rolling over Subaru. Is this built on camry platform or something?
  12. What is this the constipation channel ? Where are the " I did this to my subaru now this is better, I would do this again!". posts. here's how you can make your car better and fix flaws not just wait until the factory ones reoccur. Seems like owning a subaru is a passive experience like BBQ . Where are the group buys for after-market stuff that all we Know is better than OEM? Where is the sharing of this knowledge? Seems like this had better be called the squeak channel.
  13. On Mine it says 33/30 lbs front/back. I had subscribed to the theory that as long as the ratio was 11/10 ratio front to back your OK. But now I think differently. I was getting some wandering weirdness with the all wheel drive ( auto trans ) in corners running 37/33.5 I find that as you go up in pressures that the transmission will favor a closer ratio, for instance I am running 37/35. or 10.6/10
  14. I came to the conclusion that even if you pay that little bit more it is well worth it to go nitrogen. I personally would have a long hard look at koni"s given they are also Japanese. Sounds like the KYB's are the house favorite. I believe that as long as they are nitrogen damped or better then your fine. Do they have after market magnetic shocks yet ?
  15. http://allwheeldriveauto.com/subaru-head-gasket-problems-explained/ I found this site hope it helps, sounds to me like you have the old style.
  16. After a long search when I owned a VW I finally found eurospeed they were fantastic. Who does Subarus privately with any degree of excellence?
  17. I found this link out there on the web. http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2283696 I might add though that the new silica based compounds do a much beter job on ice and make the need to go really narrow for most folks a thing of the past.
  18. I just had OEM Subaru packagd wiper inserts installed on the front sides. What are they? They are just like the originals and are genuine OEM. But what are they?
  19. Ok I don't think that is what the poster meant. Just because the subaru is all wheel drive doesn't mean people will drive it faster than it can stop. Snow tires will out stop and out handle most all seasons and problems with sumer tires in winter is what we are still contending with. Also there are the exceleration irregularities ie fishtailing that come with 2wd at any speed. But time and time again during a 3 hour drive I was able to navigate snowy in-between areas and make change lanes without feeling compromised. I was able to drive for an hour on snow pack yes at 50 mph.
  20. For those of you who have yet to subscribe to the monthly Winding Road E-Magazine http://www.nextautos.com/Winding-Road-Magazine Here is an article I thought folks around here might enjoy. http://www.nextautos.com/ten-most-beautiful-subarus-in-no-particular-order Personally between the Forester the Legacy and Both impreza's I would find it hard to pick.
