  1. Not been able to drive mine as it's getting a heart transplant (waiting for parts to hit the mailbox) for WCSS. But it's always done well in the heat. Always stays right on the first line at the bottom of the temp guage. (about 1/4 of the way up) 102 F here today.
  2. Hopw you can save it. Other than whatever happened below the rear bumper the body looks pretty good on it.
  3. I'll know as it gets closer. But I'm wanting to head out there and roll around the sand in the Soobs with ya one of those days. I'm still waiting for parts to arrive so I can finish up my engine and swap 'em. (they say I should have my parts before the 5th, dang free shipping. hehe) The current leak would take me a case of oil to reach the coast.. And it's on it's last leg anyway.
  4. Seen enough pics of EC to know that unless you want to reach speeds that leave nothing attached under your Soob in order to make it over stuff...... Weld it.
  5. :slobber: :slobber: :slobber: :slobber: Wow. Great job.
  6. I like the ATV tire seat. I think that should stay. Way better than the milk crate I used to drive an old Triumph around once. Seriously. Looking good. Can't wait to see it done.
  7. Sweet. Sand Lake huh? I'll have to see if I have mine back together by then. (engine puked, gotta build the spare)
  8. Thats gonna be some fun. Are you going to make some short rear doors for it, or just weld in some skins? Be kinda neat to have gear access on the sides.
  9. Nice. Thats a bit of tire you have under there.
  10. Didn't get as many pics as I should have but here's a few. I was tail gunner most of the day as I had the biggest CB But the fact I also had the only WORKING CB made it kinda pointless later. hehe So later in the day I took up second place so I could give Gregg hand signals as I had the GPS but he was leading. Going down a fun little trail at the back of the pack. After a break we came back up the trail but the Blazer and Jeep for some reason didn't wanna do it. On the beach at Cape Kiwanda. Some hang gliders were hovering in the wind overhead. Our "families in minivans filter" at the campsite. Had to drive through it to get in and out. Filled with mosquitos. Got the fire going right away to drive them off. Scoobyclimbs getting dizzy in a bowl. There was a tree stump sticking out near the top of a dune. Seems the game was to go up drive around it and come back down. So I played too. My little EA81 ran out of oomph and I kinda used it as a pivot point. Oh well. Thats what I bought it for. Great times. My new tires worked great. The bigger size and more agressive tread proved to be a bit much for my engine in the sand but it still got around pretty good. Just lost steam on the bigger climbs it used to make. And having the spare out of the car was nice for hauling gear, so the new rack worked great as well. Didn't get to do any real night wheeling so I didn't get to play with my rock lights. (but I already knew those worked great from previous trips at night) On the way back it was getting late (my Fiancee was DJing a club and I had to get back I time to be the groupie) and I was toast so the stop at TSF/Browns Camp was merely a rest to strech the legs. They had the orange fire danger closure signs up but a guy on an ATV said the place was packed that day and the sheriff was out there and not hasseling anyone. ============ haha! Went and popped the hood. Oily! Seems the front crank seal let go at some point in the trip. Oh well that engine has been shot for awhile now, just been milking it's rod knocking butt for all it's worth. Time to put the spare back together and drop it in.
  11. I'll get some pics up soon. If a trip thread gets started for this last trip someone may have gotten good ones of it too.
  12. Comes in around the tail lights on my GL. I tracked it down by cleaning it all up and taking it for a dusty drive. Then I could trace right where it was coming in. The seals around the lights are pretty dried up. I know there are other places but on mine that was the biggest spot.
  13. Thanks. I'm sure it becomes kinda self explanitory once all mounts are side by side and such. But a good guide is always helpful. Plus as I don't have much Soob knowledge beyond my own EA81 I may not have thought about EA82 mounts. "these mounts look more like a well loved dog chew toy than a real mount." That about sums it up right there.

A bit of info on it. Gives some info on difficulty and such. http://www.aworc.com/orv-area/Naches-Wagon-Trail.html A 4x4 board I'm on describes it as tight in spots. Fullsize rigs (meaning fullsize pickups+ ) generaly get body damage. Some spots require good clearance.
  15. Hhmmmmmmm........ I believe my mounts have seen better days. Kinda mushy. They are another thing that has been on the to do list. I'm bumping them up to the do soon list.
  16. Not sure. Don't do alot of tire spinning even when wheeling. I'm more of the idle down the trail easy going type. And I mean come on, EA81 with 316,000 or so miles on it..... not real big in the axle shreading power department. Sand dunes are the only all out place and that is a rare trip. And my Soob is stock chassis wise. Only 25" tires (26" as of yesterday though). The first two I could see as I had upper strut mounts fail and the axle/brake lines became my limiting straps. That was a day of days right there. Had to be there, the sounds coming from my wheelwells when the suspension came back down and the strut tried to find it's place again was making my spotter cringe. So yeah, the first blowout was a given. As the angle were too great so no real power was needed in that case to do damage, only some rotation. The second one failed a week later. But they are in need of replacement again, lots of "whoomp whoomp whoomp" on acceleration in 1st/2nd. Goes away once up to speed. Same thing they did before blowing last time. The needle bearings pulverized in them. (I took a peek in one before rebooting one and exchanging it to make sure it was not something I could take care of without making the drive out to DI.) Out of warranty now so I've been milking them. Now I don't feel any slop when I grab the axle shaft and try to wiggle it in the DOJ. But the whole DOJ does seem to wiggle on the trans output. (Or maybe the output shaft is wiggling. Maybe trans bearings... no leaks though and I would think the seals would show signs of abuse.) Not a DD so it tends to get forgotten till the next time I take it for a spin. So I've not given it the major checkover I really should. hehe, I really just need to finish building my "new" engine, do my 5-speed swap, and throw some new axles in while I'm at it. Already has new wheelbearings so everything would be fresh as can be. I should have cleaned out the grease in them and put synthetic CV grease in like you mentioned before when they were new. Gonna do that on the next set.
  17. Nice. now it looks proper. I got my new bigger tires mounted as well. Did some clearancing and made sure there were no sharp edges (so it may rub but not shread). I'll see after this weekend where I might have to BFH it a bit more. So nice to finally have all terrains on it. And I finally have tires on my Soob that are as big as my spare! hehe
  18. Best part is the warranty. I keep blowing them up (the little needle bearings in the DOJ tend to shatter) and Discount Import keeps handing me new ones. Though at this point they think I'm drag racing it and give me a funny look..... Reality is I never go much over 3 grand and my engine is too worn out for anything but slug like performance. Love 'em just wish the DOJ was designed different instead of three roller bearings with tiny needle sized bearings inside. (I've had 'em apart, lots of free play right out of the box)
  19. And that is how we are going to push our Soob's limits just a bit further. I've gotten caught in the "can't be done" rut. But at least giving things a shot could at the very least spawn a new idea, or inspire someone else to take it a step further. I have an idea for if you ended up wanting to go with gears. At least to make it like the ones in the link I posted. Not sure if they still have them or not. But last time I was down at Clackamas Steel thay had a couple crates of transmission guts. Lots of various gears and such in there. Just a thought.
  20. From way back when it was totally stock except for paint. Sand Lake Picking a line. ScoobyClimbs preparing for liftoff. Chazmataz sailing. Me sailing. fire break 5 Christmas Valley Dunes
  21. Kinda figured if you were going that far you proly were already planning to relocate it. but I just thought I mention it. Awesome.
  22. Gonna be sweet. May I suggest a relocation of the radiator for better approach angle? Just figuring if you are gonna do all that may as well address one of the biggest Soob flaws for wheeling. (though with the lift and swampers it gets helped out alot) Alot on my plate these days but if I was closer I'd be down to lend a hand here and there. I'll just have to watch though.
  23. I'm planning on meeting saturday in Newberg.
  24. I'm just off of Cherryville on Baty. Gregg told me you were close by. I've seen your lifted outback around town. I'll be the token old school rig next weekend out at Sand Lake and such. (I think I caught wind of you going on the Outback board, and Gregg told me I should tag along)
  25. I like the portal hub idea GD! Always thought it would be the way to go but the $$$ of having them custom made. Recently have seen some in a 4x4 mag. They are just using twin idler gears. Only for the D60 for now though. Maybe if the Yota guys show interest and some are made for them, we could be closer to modding a set for Soobs. Maybe. http://www.motorsports.axletech.com
