  1. Ah yes put one in my 96 Legacy not to long ago, although some say aftermarket is ok for this part personally when it comes to pretty much an sensor on a Subaru I choose OEM, If you dont want to go to the dealer I can say Bosch is a decent brand in the aftermarket...
  2. No prob. bud, its pretty easy to install, under an hour. They do tell you to remove the lower trim panel under the steering column to install the relay however with delicate hands you can maneuver the relay in there and pop it in without removing the panel... OH, you will need a 10 mm socket and a ratchet , there is one bolt and one clip that holds each foglight in plus to remove the little undershield you have to remove a clip and a bolt...
  3. Not sure where your located in PA however I have installed dozens of foglights in the new foresters ( I work for Subaru) there all pretty straight forward..did you get instructions with the foglight kit? A: yes, stick a screw driver on the side of it and they should pop right out B: Yes it is already pre wired the harness for the foglights is taped up out of the way ( you have to remove the little splash shield from under the foglight cutout in the bumper and you should be able to look up there and see the connector ). C: I'm assuming your talking of the switch on the steering column?. there is one phillips screw holding the lower portion of the steering column trim on, remove that, than you will be able to see two other screws holding on the top portion remove them, the covers snap together a tad also. Unplug the connector for the switch and remove the two tiny phillips screws that secure the switch to the column, pretty much plug and play. Dont forget to install the relay
  4. +1 I had a customer the other day on there 05 Outback, they went to walmart to get there oil change done and I throw the car in the air and the "lube tech" at walmart pulled off the trans filter instead of the oil filter, WHEN THERE IS A COVER THERE THAT SAYS OIL AND FILTER ACCESS!..DUH
  5. The "virgin switch" is located on the top of the steering column and is used to illuminate the parking lights with the key off and out of the ignition ( my best guess is off-road use)...Every now and than we will get a post on here about someones parking lights being left on and they cant figure out how to get them off, usually the switch is flipped, When I got my Legacy years ago I had this problem and I felt like such an idiot when I learned what it was...
  6. Nice car man A little boost..hmm Im thinking you should build something like this..Show her whos boss.....
  7. First of all open your sunroof and pour water down the drains and see if it runs out around the rear mud guard on the ground or by the front mud guards, If it doesnt chances are the drain is clogged which as mentioned is common. If the drains are clogged clear them with compressed air. however I have also seen where the drains come off of the little nipple up at the sunroof so that is also a possibility. As for the 3M ultrapro sealant, I have done a few of these, you can usually see light through the opening if you look close enough, your basically adding this sealant to the low/worn spots, however I personally ground down everything to make it flat and applied sealant throughout, kind of contrary to what the TSB says lol... I believe the TSB is 12-68-00...I attempted to post a link to it on Subarunet and since I think subarunet is a secure site it wont allow me to do so...I do know if you take it in the TSB states it should pay .5 hr...
  8. As mentioned Subarus EJ22 in the first and second gen Legacies and Imprezas are a phenomenal engine...If your lucky you can find an early outback with a 2.2 However it will be a 5 spd...Not to sure which you prefer automatic vs standard. The other Subaru I would recommend is a WRX wagon...Room to haul, AWD obviously and a little pep when you need it plus the decent fuel economy. I will say this, if you do decide to go this route find one that hasn't been modified in any way or beat to all hell ( it might be difficult to find lol). I have seen some of these WRX's with over 200k on them with the original turbo and all...Good luck in your search...I will say this, personally I would wait for the CVT to get good and worn in for a few years in these newer flat 4's before I would purchase one...
  9. Hmmm I dont think Ive ever seen any problems with Purolator oil filters....I can say when you tighten the painted oil filters don't use the oil filter wrench you use to loosen them fore they can strip the protective paint right off...Unless the oil filter wrench is lined of course...
  10. I'm not quite sure if they have Monroe's over there however If they do I would recommend them.. installed 4 new ones on my Legacy a while back and they have performed flawlessly so far....Very pleased...
  11. +1..as mentioned DONT do any clutch dumps Subarus in general have a very difficult time transfering power from the trans to spin all 4 wheels which obviously results in many a broken transmission...Not just the WRX either lol... in 98 or 97 rather when perhaps your vehicle was constructed traction control was not available on Subarus. ...You have a pretty decent car there and if the HG's where already done you have an even better car which when well taken care of will last you many many care free miles.....
  12. automatic is more difficult than manual or well i suppose just slightly different in terms of R & R... You might be able to find a decent tutorial in the archives section of http://www.endwrench.com...
  13. Hmmmm are you 100% sure this is not normal and that the block hasnt been modified in any way such as forged internals?.....In my WRX..I have a EJ257 block with EJ20 heads... My cars knocks its rump roast off.. a tad quieter when warm but not much..however I made 100% sure this is normal due to the full floating wrist pins and the forged rods/pistons... there used to be a video up on youtube from someone but for the life of me I cant find it...lol...
  14. LMAO...I try to explain this to customers sometimes and they look at me like an idiot...lol
  15. Hmmm when was the last time it had a tune up...perhaps a clogged fuel filter...perhaps a bad sensor its hard to tell sometimes....any maintenance history? automatic or manual? How many miles are on the vehicle? Usually if you have an open plug wire it will cause a miss and throw the light...however I do know for a fact some of the early subarus where hesitant to throw the light even though they where OBDII..I have actually seen some older Subarus miss like you wouldn't believe and the CEL never illuminated...and yes the light was working properly..lol...Also check the ignition coil...
  16. If your looking for some brighter lights..Ive seen some good prices on some HID kits also I just put Silverstars in my legacy and they are an amazing improvement for around $30.....along with that polish the headlight housings and you should be good to go...
  17. As mentioned very common to see the outer "ring" seperate from the balancer itself...I would also recommend the use of a solid pulley...I know my 96 EJ22 has a solid pulley...I would be willing to bet you could take a trip the the salvage yard and pick up 1 if not 2 to be on the safe side...for pretty cheap...What year is the outback? Are you sure its not the HG leaking oil/coolant?
  18. +1..I never understood this...people say say "oh if you let your gas get so low you will start picking up sediment and such in the bottom of the tank"..well guess where the fuel pump pickup is..almost the bottom of the tank..lol..
  19. As mentioned...Any DOHC..its much easier to pull the engine...SOHC..cake in the car....
  20. so this is a U5 car...it prob. has the 3 piece intake manifold and the triangle shaped exhaust ports in the heads....hmmm...as mentioned check for intake/vacuum leaks also check for exhaust leaks..If you have the means I would also check the IAT/MAF/CTS sensors...all vital engine sensors that could throw numerous codes..
  21. Hmmm....What year/model is the vehicle? I've seen this code thrown a few times for a bad front A/F sensor ( not saying thats the problem here)...do you currently have any drivability problems...rough idle? lack of power? etc....
  22. You could run a piece of steel wool across each line in the grid with the defogger on...where it sparks there is an open...Of course the multi-meter as mentioned also works... ...I think I saw a repair kit from Permatex...
  23. Yeah Subaru has had grey, green (olive) and gold axle nuts over the years..I personally don't think it makes a difference...as long as you torque it to the proper spec and stake it I would think you should be fine...
  24. +1^...as long as the noise goes away when the vehicle is fully warm I wouldnt be to concerned...
