Hey all, i am putting an 87 RX steering columb into the 79 brat... i need a wiring diagram for the RX columb and anything else usefull for the wiring... even a brief description of what each plug controls would be super helpfull... thanks!

agx's and all those nice struts are all meant for the street... if you want something with travel that will bolt on get yourself some rally suspension... alright, so not many can afford a nice set of DMS coilovers...(although they are LOADS of fun...) something cheaper? hotbits coilovers... a set new starts at around $1200 ish... (thats what i got quoted... CND) then its all out add ons... can't remember the exact #'s... but 150 gets you external oil canisters(don't need to run hoses and crap, they are on the coilover), 250 or something for 1 way valve adjustment and i think another 250 for 2 way...(my prices for the valving are wrong i think... but you get the idea) also custom spring rates and lengths... 10% ontop of total if you want rally valving... so it can get up there pretty quick... but for an adjustable coilover that gives you more ride height than stock, not bad! btw, awesome impreza! would love to have that as a DD!

that's such a vague question... look at that sky... i wonder how far we'll get into outer space...? any car can have as much potential as you want it to have... if it happens or not is up to you and your wallet... i have been following most of your threads... and replied to most of them too... deside what YOU are doing... then deside based on that what to do with your brat... perhaps save up some money before you go gung-ho on this thing... pics of your brat would be kinda nice to have too...

anyone got a gen 1 heater core for me?
Zefy replied to the sucker king's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
i would be interested in a group buy to depending on the price... mine only gives me slightly warmed air... and only really works when it's hot outside... quick question... how do i get to the old one!?! i have the dash out and stuff but i still can't really see and easy way to get to the heater core... special way to do it? thanks -

ya i'm pretty excited about these too... any news? -
finaly some real suspension for my wagon!!!
Zefy replied to suberdave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
awesome work! i'm really curious to hear about the results... where did you get the bushings for the 14mm to 12mm? did you make them yourself? how exactly did you modify the rear tops to have the funky ea82 mounting plate bolt onto it? -
Great ideas (stuff ive done/doing)

looks good! to bad you couldn't do the entire dash with just one piece of fabric... i might have to steal that idea of yours... and hey, refering to your steering issues and bashing your fingers on stuff... NO WONDER! look at the tiny little steering wheel! (looks pretty good though...:-p ) -
if you get an ea81 parts car you're set... and from what you've said you have all the fab equipment you need... if you're really that broke, perhaps a better solution is to go to the gym and work on your arms... i used to drive my brat up in the mountains on some pretty sketchy roads... (or no road at all) and i sometimes had a problem keeping the wheel straight but i never had a problem with the wheel going madly out of control and me jabbing my fingers on stuff...
-
get an ea81 power steering rack and put it in... they are slightly wider so you'll have to be a little bit inventive... perhaps just ovaling out the holes for the crossmember would be enough? welding on extra support to where you're ovaling would be a pretty good idea though... while your at it, put an ea81 engine and d/r trans in there... power steering will solve all your problems...
-
like i told you in the other thread... the easiest and best method is to upgrade to ea81 rear supension... this gives you an instant 3 inch lift... go to the j/y and get yourself some rear suspension... then just take your old stuff out and have a look... it's easy to see where to make your adaptor brackets...(sorry i don't have pics because i haven't actually done it yet... waiting on some parts...) you can even use ea82 suspension... the downside to that(or upside depending on how you look at it) is it is 2 inches wider on either side so your tires will stick out... while gaining stability you'll end up having to chop up your quarter panels to accomodate the wider track so you don't get rubbing when cornering or going over rough terrain... then you can run a decent size tire... the only other option i can possibly think of would be to have massive rims in the back that will just go right over the torsion bar end... so you'd need like a 28 inch rim...:-p there is no point in trying to moddify that old ea71 suspension so it works without the stub... it'll probably end up costing you more money and headache then it'd be worth... but hey, maybe just cut off the end of the stub and see what happens:rolleyes: hope that helps...

that'd be a supercharger... why not just but a normal s/c and bolt that on instead of fiddling with an electic one like that and changing it so it runs on pulleys? http://search.ebay.com/electric-supercharger now mind you these are gimmicky things... they don't actually work all that well.. my buddy (a sucker for the ricer performance crap) had one on his old car... according to him he could only feel it in 3rd gear... and i;'m pretty sure somebody flinstoning it up would produce more power then one of these bad boys... might wanna give one of these little guys a try... it couldn't hurt really... only 40-50 bucks or so... lol there is even one showing it on a new suby (ebay listing)...

the whole kit for either car is 1100AUS bucks... send the guy(Gee) an email for seperate prices for the stuff...

you couldn't even use wrx brakes on the front if you wanted to keep your wheels since you need 16" wheels to clear them... (or some 15" alloys) so using your stock 13" wheels won't work... and i'm not use on this but i doubt the pug wheels would clear WRX brakes... RS brakes are a different animal...(15" steel wheels are usable) i'm sure getting xt-6 parts shipped over to you wouldn't be that huge of a deal and finding impreza parts shouldn't be to hard to get locally... where is the rest of that car you got the ej20t from? and you don't need the entire back end of an xt-6... you need backing plates, rotors and hubs... that's it... you could probably fit it all in a shoe box...(well, almost... a ski boot box for sure...) oh and you might wanna look at www.crossbreadperformance.com if it's to much money to order xt-6 bits then this is going to be to much aswell... but it's worth a look.. perhaps some insperation...

just for reference the spare tire will push the engine down under the car instead of into your lap in a head on collision... having a big beafy bumper will help that, buuuut if it does get by the bumper it will still help... note: only works when the tire is bolted down! and if i were you, i would save that spot for something else... it would be best to put it somewhere that gets nice cold air... not right behind the engine... you might wanna consider relocating your battery to the spare tire spot and running your intake box where the battery is... nice cold(er) air... but really, these motors only have 65hp... it's not going to make a whole heck of a difference... i am interested in your interior setup... i recently stripped my interior out and now the thing is empty... but now i realize that getting carpet isn't an easy (or cheap) task... perhaps your method will work for me too... pics of everything would be sweet! -
the adaptor plates are simple to make, or so i've been told... i guess the expencive part is buying an ea81 rear suspension... you need a good welder to be able to do this though... since the adaptor plates have to be welded on... and i tried looking into sucking that butt back in... near impossible to do since that end is what holds the end of the torsion bar... so you can't cut it... then i thought that since i was upgrading to coilovers i wouldn't even need the torsion bar... unfortunatly from what i'm told the torsion bar is a supporting member for the trailing arm so it would really weaken the suspension... and also, you'll notice that even if you get rid of that end bit you're still going to have clearance issues which could be solved using wheel spacers... but that's always kinda sketchy in my mind since there is extra stress on the wheel bearings... but hey, i might be wrong about the torsion bar... so if you have an extra rear suspension or something off a parts car then give it a whirl! if it turns out good i might have do the same so i can go unlifted...

alright if you're planning on lifting your gen1 brat (i'm assuming that's the car you're talking about) then you're going to have to do a little more work then you thought... when we lift our roo's all that happens is we drop the suspension and everything and put blocks inbetween it... now if you look at your brat's rear suspension and look at where the top of the control arm you'll see the problem... it sticks out over the tire, so even if you lift it you're still going to have that bit of the control arm sticking out over the tread of the tire... the biggest size tire i've seen on these is a 205/60/15 i think... and with that you can't even get your pinky finger through the gap... have a good look at you're suspension and you'll see what exactly i mean... so with that in mind, lifting your brat will take a little more work and effort... the easiest way to do this is to upgrade to ea81 rear suspension... you'll need adaptor plates made so that the ea81 suspension will bolt up to the stock ea71 brat locations... now the upside to this is if done right, it'll give you 3 inches of lift by itself... then just drop the diff to avoid destructive axle angles and you're golden asfar as the rear is concerned... then you can use a normal ea81 lift kit for the front with possibly a few changes with the trans crossmember... i hope that helps a bit...
-
yes it will bolt right in... although i think it'll be a slug with 3.7's... if you want something like that and don't mind running 2wd i think you should look for a 2wd trans from a gen1 coupe or something... some of those are 5speeds... and that'd solve your problem since you'd get an overdrive gear... i also think your speedo might be off... or mine is... my brat used to top out going 93mph... and the 5speed should bolt right in... then just don't run a driveshaft for the back and leave your rear end in... if you practiced a bit i bet you could change out the trans when you wanted 4wd pretty easy... now that i think about it the 5speed might even be 3.7... i'll look in the fsm tomorrow... Good luck!

you gotta realize that it's not going to be producting 165amps all the time... it will only produce that much when the load is drawing 165amps... now drawing 165amps on a car is HUGE! that's equal to running almost 45 50W off-road lights... that's a lot of lights! now even with a heavy heavy load (big big BIG stereo, lights, power converter, and the microwave in the backseat) you're still probably not going to be maxing the thing out... Ken runs a welder on his rig i think so his in the most extreme conditions might be drawing enough to kill 10hp... but then again he isn't going to be driving when he's welding...:-p so running such an alt won't take 10hp outa your rig that you'll never see again... as a matter of fact it might even make it run better due to it producing more amps at a lower resistance in the alt making it more efficient...

alright... bring it back from the dead... so i tested out the socket last week... and i have some good news! it didn't break! the downside... i snapped my impact rated 3/8 to 1/4 adaptor... and i also snapped the heads off not just one bolt on the diff... but 8 bolts... off 4 diffs... so they are strong... (at least mine is...) so i'll cut you guys a deal! i'm fresh out of diffs to break... so i will trade one of you the socket for one of these bloody bolts... sounds pretty fair to me? who's up for it?

i don't think you will be able to find forged goods... it's not something you can just pull off the shelf with these cars... if you want power, upgrade to a newer engine... if you really wanted NOS i think the easiest way to do it would be to upgrade to an ea81 and convert it to SPFI... then you could tune it (i don't quite know how you'd tune it) to run NOS... if you want power there are other ways to go about getting it...

my old auto teacher has all of his cars and trucks running on LPG... including the school drag car... i quite like the system and i might also think about converting when i have the time and money... so if you got a tank that goes in the spare tire spot, then where does your spare tire go?:rolleyes:finding a good spot for the tanks is kind of a challenge it seems... if you find a good way please tell us all... i would like to know! and hey, if you do deside to get a TDI (i personally wouldn't do it!) come on down to westminster VW in Coquitlam... i work there... tell them Greg told you to come down... they like it when i do that... i stil say go for the LPG though!

Im pimpin out my 79 brat and need some info...

i'm pretty sure this should still be in the retrofitting section... but anywho... i'll lend my advice... if you want an off-roader don't get a turbo... there are a few people on here that use them, but for the most part, it isn't done because of the high RPM needed to make the turbo go...(bad for crawling) and you also cannot use a conventional body lift like the gen2 cars... gen1's you can lift, but you still won't be able to put on bigger tires... go look at your rear suspension... look at where the trailing arm attaches to the rest of the rear suspension.. the torsion bar mount sticks out over the tread of the tire, so even if you lift it you'll still only be able to put on tires until they hit that point... the solution? put on ea81 suspension... i'm in the proccess of doing this and i'll get back to you when i have it all sorted out... engine wise again... if you want to keep it simple, go with an ea81 with d/r trans... if you really really want a turbo, your best bet is the ea81t... or you can do what i'm doing and use an ej22... or of you still want a turbo after that, ej22t... i was debating doing this but desided against it since it is 100 times more complex and it'll guzzle the premium gas... hope that helps! Good luck! -
wow that's shiny! looks awesome... i was kinda joking about the blingyness... i actually don't really like the look of crome or uber shiny stuff... i like a more dull look... more ruggidish if you get my meaning... so these colours will most likely not be gloss colours... flat colours... possibly gloss if it's a dark colour or i really like the look of it... (i like that 'grabber green' diff i saw a pic of... that'd be pretty sweet although i'd like to keep it 'my own'... so a different colour, but same idea... anywho... i'm gonna confuse myself... i don't really wanna do blue with yellow since hey, it's been done...:-p

i was planning to paint he diff... obviously... but i never thought about the driveshaft!

that's the plan... what's a few more hours for a nicer look eh?
