no thats ok... i have access to my own but its 40 minutes away and i can't go out there all the time... it would be easier for me to go get mine then for you to send it to me... thanks for the offer though! perhaps it would be easier if i just went and got it... then i'll be sure my measurements are accurate...

speaking of urethane... how hard is it to make urethane bushings and other assorted goodies? a chunk of urethane and a modeling knife could go a long way i'd think...?

i agree with everybody saying you should replace your radiator... but juuuuust to make sure get the car nice and warm and feel (carefully now) the fins on the radiator... check and see if the heat is consistant the whole way through the radiator... start from one end and work your way across... if it isn't consistant heat then your radiator is deffinatly clogged and you can put your mind at ease in knowing that that's the problem... this isn't fool proof but its pretty darn good... replacing your radiator is a very good idea no matter what though... you might want to unplug the fans to make sure you don't get whacked by the blades when you're feeling around in there... and carefull not to burn yourself... Good luck!

according to my dad our 01 legacy is having some issues... he says its 'missing' while accelerating and we got about 100km less in the last tank of gas... i asked him and he's posative that its not throwing on the CEL... any ideas? possibly due for a timing belt change??? (as far as i know its never been done and its got about 85-90k miles on it...) could that be the problem?

alright now that the debate is over... (yes it is over!:-p) i still need measurements! i'll look into cost of materials... i'd assume i need high grade aluminium for this... (we make small aircraft landing gear parts and boat props so i think that stuff should do dandily) and yes i don't want underdrive... slowing down my accessories would suck... i use WAY to much power for that! so if anybody could get me some #'s that'd be fantastic...

i'm posting this because a handfull of you have/going to/are doing the ej22 swap... we've just gone through the first day of CNC machining at school today... and it seems like i'll have access to the machine a fair amount... first thing that came to mind when learning to use it is lightened crank pulleys!!! since i wanna put the ej22 into my brat i think making my very own crank pulley would be awesome... (a personall touch if you will) i need to know the EXACT dimensions of this thing... if somebody could take some accurate measurements or if you're up to it draw it in autoCAD that'd be fantasic... (perhaps a quick drawing just so i know the dimesions properly) i don't have easy access to my ej22 so help would be appreciated! at the very least if i can't make a couple sets i could save the CAD file and the G-code file so it could be used in any compatable CNC machine and i'd be more then happy to share... could also do the alt pulley! (same as above... measurements and drawings) thanks everybody! sorry mods if i can't put this here...

solved using the fat-case... i wanted to do this because my trans is going and i got an RX trans just sitting... but then i realized i would be buying a bunch of clutch parts and it really didn't seem worth it... however now that i know exactly what i need i just might try it out... it'll be a dog with the 3.7 gears...:-p (leave it in low range... might help...) bratsrus1: does it HAVE to be from an 86 brat? i have access to quite a few wagons... but no brats... if you could get some parts #'s you'd make my day! thanks!

swiftt is mostly right... MOST struts come with 'cartrages' that can be put into the strut housing... however subaru didn't start using these until the ea81 series cars... now i've never done work on that old of a car but i'd assume it'd be the same as my gen1 stage2 car... i think you can upgrade to ea81 series struts which do have replaceable cartriges... they require slight modification to fit my car... i have no idea about yours... you'd have to experiment a bit... do a search in the historic forum and perhaps retrofiting forum for suspension upgrades and the like... a few people have done a few different things... but with ea81 struts you can use larger heavier duty springs... (like those from an RX) however this will raise the car up slightly... up to you how you do it really... caboobaru has done some nice stuff aswell as renaissanceman... do some searches... as far as finding factory style struts to pop in you're most likely outa luck besides stockers... Good luck!

NEW RIMS!(sorta) never seen before!!!
Zefy replied to Zefy's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
no worries! thats what the board is here for! -
i'd recommend getting a complete carb rebuild kit... it shouldn't cost more then 50 bucks... you'll get all the gaskets and the accel pump... just make sure you get the carb kit for the right carb... ask for one for the 1600 and they should be able to help you at the parts store... you don't need to use the whole kit... yet its a good idea to rebuild it all anyways... just so you know what you're dealing with... carb cleaner and compressed air is pretty much all you need to do a carb...

still need to get them cleaned and whatnot.. gonna try and get em bead blasted... but my money is kinda gone because my windshield is leaking and i need to replace the gasket... they are 4x140 of course! -
when i did the clutch in my 79 brat the seal coming from the trans was leaking in mine... for me to fix it i had to competely take appart the trans since the seal is put in on the trans side and not the bellhousing side... so its hard to do... the seal is cheap... like 3 bucks... but as long as you go slow and take notes and stuff it should be ok...
-
alright here is what i found... if you have them near the front then light shines on the hood and windshield and you can't see diddly... there are two ways to fix this... either cover up the bottom portion of the light with electrical tape or something to stop the light from shining on the hood... or you could do what i did and move the rack to the back of the cab... works good... be sure to post pics when you're done!

i was thinking possibly converting to coil-overs... dunno how stiff that'd make it... and i'd be in place of the torsion bars... but which is better? coil overs or torsion bars???
-
alright i'm broke but what the hell, i'll ask this anyway... what strut options are there for the gen1's? i did a search and found some good stuff but not quite what i'm looking for... i want to be able to turn a sharp corner without the car leaning over and have everybody think my car is gonna roll... i heard that KYB GR-2 struts are a bit stiffer... anybody know what'd it take get GR-2's for say an ea81 to fit? i know its possible... i have a set of RX springs which i think would compliment nicely... anybody done this? should i just go on a field day and upgrade the hubs, control arms ect ect so i'd have vented rotors???? oh and what about the rear???

hey how'd you get your grill so pretty? you paint it? just clean it? how? i wanna do the 3rd eye conv on mine and having the grill super nice like yours would be a ++... oh and the trim on the hood and around the turn signal lights... what did you use to paint it? how did you prep it? any chipping anything taking place? i really like the look but i don't want it to chip and look gross within a month... -
Scum of the earth strike again
Zefy replied to Brumby Boy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
your first line of action should be to not part in surrey!:-p surrey is or was at one point the car theft capital of the world... hence i try my best to never ever ever go there... (i feel scared in surrey) also avoid burnaby... i have to go to school everyday there but the bcit parking lot is pretty secure... always remove your deck faceplate and TAKE IT WITH YOU, and any other nice expencive toys... the only way to stop people from stealing things from your car is to have nothing to steal... -
been figuring out brake upgrades for my gen1... i've done the rear disc brake upgrade and still working on the vented rotor upgrade... so with all 4 corners covered i still notice it doesn't brake as well as it could... (4 wheel disc's on the legacy is still 100x better than the brat) so that got me thinking... what is the something that everybody seems to neglect? the brake booster! now i'm pretty confident in assuming that all brake boosters aren't created equal... perhaps and ea82 brake booster or maybe even a legacy booster would work better??? with some major plumbing work i think it could be done... i'd assume i'd need to swap all the valves and whatnot so the pressure doesn't go all wonky...

i do believe it is safer to tow a honda auto then a normal one... this is due to the honda autos being based on their standards... unlike normal auto trans which have drums and bands and the like the hondas actually have gears just like the standards... you can prove this to yourself by driving it in reverse... you know that wrrrrrr'ing sound you get when driving in reverse? this is because the gears are straight cut instead of helical cut... (so if you were looking at the gear from the top with the gear standing straight up it looks like |||||||| while the helical looks more like /////////...) honda autos are just like the standards and they have this type of gear... try it out... drive your auto honda in reverse and see... then drive pretty much any other car (except a saturn) and listen... you won't hear anything... so i bet that has something to do with it not blowing up in your face... so there is some useless trivia for you...:-p

i've worked on sidekicks and the like... and a vitara isn't much different i dont think... the engine compartiments in those are SMALL... but since the engine isn't transverse i don't see why it couldn't be done... assuming the engine isn't to wide...

Again, EA81 conversion question...
Zefy replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
you could measure it... measure from the motormounts to the output shaft... if they are the same for the ea71 and ea81 then i'd think you'd be good... also... you might want to PM 'subaru jim in maple ridge' he's done this conversion... and as far as i know the only part left to do on his brat is the exhaust... -
PROVE SUBIEJIM WRONG!!! RX discussion!
Zefy replied to Zefy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
we observed the opposite of that... the rear output shaft was having a much harder time spinning then the axle stubs on the front... mind you after we free'd it up a bit the one front unlocked axle stub was spinning with the rear output... and shouldn't the rear spin 3.7 times faster then front axle stub? hence the gear ratio in the diffs??? -
actually this might be pretty cool... from my recent experiment with subaru jim in maple ridge has left me pondering... the centre diff is VERY open when it isn't locked... so maybe a limited slip would be a grand idea! this makes me wonder though... a viscous diff only operates at high speeds... so launching from a stop it won't help you... (although you've got a locking centre diff so whats it matter eh?) if you manage to get it to work(fit) and do some testing i'd be interested... i wonder how much those mazda diffs cost! only game on the GTX...? i wonder how hard it would be to fit something like a phantom grip lsd to a RX centre locking diff... even possible? seems like its kinda redundent now... maybe if you got a pic of both diffs sitting side by side we can see what we're dealing with...?
