  1. i'm really not sure about this (a guess really) but isn't the ea82 control arms longer? adaptablilty...? also making control arms seems kinda risky... having a control arm break when going down the freeway would really suck...*pictures it*... *shudders*... anywho... no they probably wouldn't be hard to make... you could also make em a little different profile as to make a smidge more ground clearance... i know i've hit my control arms a couple times... or you could go all out and swap in legacy front suspension... the legacy has fully adjustable camber, caster, and toe-in... (while ea82 and prior only have toe-in... but you all prabably know that already... )
  2. heh when i need tires mounted i just go to my old high school... have a chit-chat with the teacher and i put the tires on myself or i get one of the students to do it...(i don't tend to trust the students...) but ya... 10 bucks CND... mounted and balanced...4 or 5 tires... i just tell him 'a set of tires' and off i go... old tires disposed of for 1.25...
  3. pfffft...:-p i've had my 79 brat get to 90... mind you this wasn't completely under its own power... i had a decent stretch of downhill and my foot to the floor... the brat is amazingly stable at that speed... on flats (as flat as it gets around here really) i've gotten it up to 80... i bet if you wind it out you can easily get going to well over 100...
  4. no your switch should be ok but its the ground that is bad... look at the wire you grounded... is it corroded and nasty? clean that all up and plug it back on... if the fan works like normal again then its fixed.. if it doesn't work still then i'd say the switch is gone... i saw some on ebay for cheap... just do a search and you'll find em...
  5. it was the door that gave it away for me... i seriously had to look at to figure it out! good work!
  6. is that real? it looks kinda photochop-ish... it looks sweet! i want one!
  7. oh ya... good point... i don't see how a shooshing sound could be signs of HG... this has been going on in my parents legacy since it rolled it off the factory floor...(or soon after... we weren't actually at the factory:-p) i have also never gotten it to overheat...(prominent when air pockets are in the engine) i rev that car like a hoolagin sometimes and i've never had a peep outa it from overheating... however! the legacy does have HG issues since when we flushed the coolant it began burning fluid(mmm sweet sweet coolant smell) then when we went to complain they put in the additive stuff for the 'quick fix' pile of crap... i say we should all get free HG!!!
  8. this happens on my parents 01 legacy and i really think its nothing to worry about... i'm pretty sure its just the heater core filling up with fluid... this thought just came to mind... but perhaps it is so the car heats up faster...? when you hear the heater core filling up that fluid had just come from the engine... supposably fairly warm fuild by the time it gets there... plus... nothing ever goes wrong... its just a noise that happens for like 5 seconds then goes away... you should hear some of the noises my 79 makes... now THERE is some mystery!:-p
  9. me and subaru jim (well it was actually all his idea but i really like it) were talking about how to set up using two engines... this was going to be for a boat application but i don't see why it wouldn't work for a car too... synchronizing two engines running two different sets of wheels is hard... you can imagine why... so his idea was to have the two engines sitting one in front of the other... then connecting the output shaft of the engine up front to the engine behind via an electic clutch attached to the crank pulley of the engine behind... there now your two engines pretty much have to run at the same speed! the engine behind will be connected to your trans like normal! you can even turn the front engine off when cruizing to save gas... (hence why you can see this is perfect for a boating application) the front engine won't need any accessories like an alt... because the engine behind can generate pleanty of power to run both... and if the engine behind breaks... you got a parts engine right in front of it! if the front engine breaks... disengage the electic clutch and you go home slowly... then wham... use two ea82's and now your pushing a little over 200hp! lol... use this setup and you're going to have a LONG buggy...:-p but just some ideas to think about... (i'm pretty excited about the boat idea though... would be cool...) sorry jim... i've spilled your plans!:-p
  10. i remember reading an article about the justy being used as a rally car in the late 80's or sometihng... they made it able to shift at 12k rpm... they did TONS of head work on it though... got something like 120hp out of it without a turbo... i'm also pretty sure they went through a motor every few races too..:-p i can't seem to find the article anymore... if anybody knows where it is...? there was a justy being used in a stage rally that i went to... it was a cool to see a justy in the same race as a 500hp sti...:-p (different class of course but it was still awesome...) they make cool rally cars... and with intake and exhaust done you can get like 75hp outa em... which when the car is gutted ain't to shabby...
  11. i'm slowly getting into tsd... i've done 1 so far... trying to get into more but its kinda hard when you're completely broke...:-p also trying to volunteer at stage rallies and tsd rallies... once again rather hard when broke...
  12. so that guy still has the d/r but he's lost the center diff lock... hmmm... this is just a backwards thought (i tend to do that) but everybody is trying to get 4.11 and 4.44 gears into the d/r trannies... what about sticking a d/r with a locked center diff into an ej? stick the butt end of a d/r onto an ej??? just a thought... any thoughts?
  13. 4th gear is pretty much 1:1... if i'm not mistaken 4th gear just connects the input shaft from the engine directly to the output shaft going out to the diffs... completely ignoring the layshaft which has all the gears on it... so theoretically it is 1:1... i think the .03-.08 difference is due to slop in the gears...? but really... this thing is going to be for beachs and sand and stuff right? a .1(tops) difference isn't going to make a big deal... the tires won't have enough grip to worry about it anyway...
  14. a lot of rallies done by the WCRA up here in BC usually have a vintage car class in most of the races... old sunbeams, volvos, ect ect... check it out... www.rallybc.com just click on some of the rallies and look at the pics... mostly new cars but always a few old ones... (no old gen subies (pre 79) that i have found however...)
  15. hehe ya your supercharger set up is awesome reddevil! i was wondering why your car was so awesome at wcss8 and why it hauled so much arse! lol i also wondered why it spat carbon gunk all over my parents 01 white legacy rear bumper after being parked behind you for a couple hours... (rev rev rev...):-p a sweet car none the less!

    79 1600 lift?

for the rear the fenders aren't the problem... you'll notice on the back that your control arm has a big arse joint where it connects to the rest of the suspension... and this joint overhangs the rear tire... so you can only get bigger tires until they hit that spot...(until you go with a lift of course) i think the max size tire you can fit under there is 205/60/15... i've seen people run that size before... but you couldn't even fit your pinky finger between that spot...:-p
  17. i was looking at the ATV tires on there... i know its been discussed many many times before but it says the weight rating is around 480lbs... now is that for one tire or for all 4??? a suby isn't far off from that... i've seen off-roaders use tracter type tires before... i got some vids that are absolutely awesome... best non-suby vids i got! in the first vid you'll just kinda go... oh my... oh my... OH NO HE DIDN'T! then you'll laugh...:-p (poor landrover...) http://recolo.org/images/RussianMuddingVid.wmv http://www.iauto.lv/4x4video/trapenes_purvi.wmv
  18. driver ain't no passenger!:-p 6 passengers and one driver does equal 7 however...
  19. a simple way to check the fan is to take the lead off the fan and ground it to the body or right to the battery... the lead i'm talking about is on the bottom of the fan housing on the side closest to the battery... there is a little block with a wire on it... disconnect it(it should be a little plug) and ground it... if it turns on then you're original ground is bad, the thermal switch is ruined, or the fan is just plain bad... anyway... if you want to replace it just go to any junk yard and yank one off pretty much any car as long as it fits... take the old one with you to compare... heck get two and have dual fans...
  20. well the answer to that is move the bench back to the very back of the car... 6 passenger seating!:-p
  21. the heads will work... BUT in doing so you'll be raising your compression to something like 10.5:1... next on the list is they are EXTREMELY restrictive... the ej18 was designed with economy in mind so the in total you'll be raising you compression then getting way less air into the engine... making the hp gains near 0... go with the ej22 heads... or if you're really inventive and want freakishly high compression port and polish the ej18 heads...
  22. last year registration was 11 dollars pre-paid if i'm not mistaken... 15 at the gate...? a really great deal for all the fun you get!
  23. i'm pretty sure he's got something going on like this... normal front mount engine and trans. the fwd axles being used for driving wheels. instead of the 4wd output shaft going to a rear diff, it is going to another trans. it will be locked in 4th gear so it will be a 1:1 gear ratio so it will match the very front diff in the first trans. then on the second trans axles are ran, along with a rear diff like normal with the 4wd output shaft... giving it 6wd!!! this is a really sweet idea! its gonna be a heavy freak too!!!:-p if i were you i'd use something with a little more ooph like an ER27 or something. a turbo motor might have trouble with that thing at low speeds. and that thing is gonna be built for low speeds it seems. i would also be looking into gutting the second trans. running it in 4th gear means you can take a LOT of gears out... (actually almost all of them...) can't wait to see how it all turns out!
  24. and what about the rear? bolting on widened fenders on the front would be easy... making the rear match however...? you would do the rear correct? if not then i'd think it'd look kinda goofy with wide fenders up front covering all the tire and tire poking out on the rear...:-p making flares would be a lot easier... and you can make them out of fiberglass and just make as many as you need... make em nice and not super flashy...
  25. your coupe should have a kinda trans support hanger thing that helps stabalize then engine... there is a bracket that mounts to the trans then it goes up and attaches to a spot under the spare tire area... that should give you proper measurements if you just hang it off that... i can take a pic to show it better... tell me if you need em...
