  1. hey i'm soon going to be doing this on my 79 brat... the backing plates are SO hard to get off... i still have the rear suspension from the rx sitting under a tarp waiting for me to pound the poop outa it... but while pounding i kinda, may have bent the muck outa that sheetmetal plate (it was super rusty anywho) and i was wondering if its important to have on there... i was planning to just cut it off or bang it back into a decent shape... its just a dust shield right? should i be worried about removing it? are my brakes gonna stop working?!?
  2. alright... my dad used to sell this stuff for a living... what should be written on the box or whatever it comes in will tell you its maximum working load... its breaking point is 10x that of the max working load... its the industry standard...
  3. oh man mike this is going to be awesome! deffinatly cheering the brat on!!! that er27 is gonna be a big bite for the 4spd! its gonna be sweet... don't go to big on the tires i'd say! smaller tires = happier axles! we need pics! and are you doing this to the 78 from the suby show? lol... you got a head start! you got the good struts in there!:-p
  4. 3200lbs should be ok i think... the standard for rope has a breaking point of 10x its load limit... so the rope shouldn't break until it reaches 32,000lbs... you winch should/would crap out before it reaches that limit... although i don't really have any off-road experience to go off of... i just know the numbers...:-p
  5. lol thats awesome! apparently i was an odd child... i didn't like playing in the mud... i do now though! tell me when he makes a recreation of you pulling my sorry butt out of that gravel pit at wcss7...:-p
  6. lol thanks for the quick reponce! i've checked this on the front and back... what happens on the dash is what happens outside... turning left is worse then right... the left works fine if you hold the blinker down about half way... without it pushing past the little clunk where it stays down... works like normal then... but if you push it the whole way down it will blink once then nothing... and its not even a full blink... just a quick little flash...
  7. the blinkers DO work... i can get them to work whenever i need to turn... i have to hold down the arm to the point just before it clicks into place and stays on... the fuse i'd assume is fine since the blinkers turn on and what not... dash all lights up... before they stopped working i'd push down the arm and then i'd get one blink then it would click about 5 times faster then it should... i'd get a click but no blink... inside or out... but when playing with the arm nicely the brinkers work... oh hey... that might be it... the relay... hmmm... where would i find that? and is that the same part that makes it go click click? i think it is that... when my dad talked to the shop the guy said it'd take 2 hours to get to the problem... which indeed frightens me... thats a long time to be taking apart a dash... plus i'd be scared doing it myself... knowing me i'd probably find an airbag punching me in the face...
  8. alright... its not that urgent... calm down...:-p the blinkers on my dads 01 legacy are going... you push the arm down and you get one blink then nothing... right turn is the same thing if your not special with the fingers... now i'd assuming this is the switcher thingmie... i want to know what years i could pull one out of and have it work...? anybody know the interchangablity of the blinkers? anybody else had this stupid problem? (fyi warrenty is gone... suby won't do diddle... although i might try again...) thanks!
  9. no they didn't slip right in... the brackets are about an inch and a half wider then stock... also... the tab in the corner closest to the back of the ebrake is the wrong shape... for the passenger side i took off the the bracket on the RX and installed the stock bracket from my brat...(had to drill one hole...) make plates for the other side that bolted to the stock holes on the car and the seat brackets... driverside i drilled out the wrongly shaped tab and fabbed a new one outa metal plate... easy to do... then make adapter plates just like on the passenger side... oh and a little bending of the tabs is needed... and some washers as spacers...
  10. title pretty much says it all... RX seats went into my 79 brat! alright... these are an awesome improvement over the stock seats... very comfortable... also these seats have 'sides' to them... no more slipping out of the seat for me when turning sharp! that was my reason for installing them (along with them being free:D) but i ran into some rather unexpected, yet good, results... the seat sits much higher then the stock one... giving me more leg room... which is nice because its cramped as it is in there... plus having that up/down adjustment is just so much fun to play with...:-p i was worried they'd conflict with my speaker boxes... but they didn't! hazzah! actually there is almost more room back there... you'll notice the driver seat is a little torn... but you can't beat free eh? i can tell how i did it if anybody is intested...

  12. gen 1 brats have 65hp and 81ft/lbs...(depending on the year) so ya... i can spin the front tires in first and shifting into second with ease aswell... as for tow ratings... the gen 1 has an 800lbs limit... thats total storage weight including people... this limit is apparently for in car and towing... although! i've seen many people tow much heavier things... i've seen one guy on here with a nice blue gen 1 hauling around his camper thing... its gotta weigh 1200lbs i'd say... actually... here is a sheet telling all the basic engine specs... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/specs/mechanical/engine-specs.html enjoy...
  13. here is another thing... if your dash lights are flickering and giving 'feedback' it is also i sign that your distributor is going... not quite sure if this is true, as i've never seen it myself... but its from a reliable source...
  14. and add a hurst shift knob to complete the slanted look!
  15. no the tranny won't fit... its got a side mounted starter while the single range has a top mounted starter... i've heard of people changing over the bellhousing on the engine... but is it really that worth it when you could just put in a whole ea81 engine and trans...?
  16. nope its deffinatly not a justy disty...(justy is a 3 cylinder...:-p ) its a very nice swap! propane is awesome! my old auto teacher runs propane on all his cars...(non of which are subarus... but hey...) propane is cheap! and it is a higher octane rating from what i hear... now i really want to get my conversion parts together! darn! looks great!
  17. hehe good work dude! nothin' like a subie, snow, and an empty parking lot to make an enjoyable evening! i want to have some snow! or go somewhere with snow! come on snow!
  18. I've been wanting to mount my Zire72 into my brat... this is pretty cool! i've also seen some engine management programs that run off your palm pilot...(dunno about the pocket pc...) i was thinking up higher on my brat... because i have a built in digi cam in my palm... hmmmm... car cam?:-p this is inspiring!
  19. it will a little bit... the tires are about 1 inch taller overall... so half an inch increase in radius... so it won't change it enough for the speedo to be inaccurate... now if you were to go to like a 29 inch tall tire... then you'd have speedo troubles! but i wouldn't worry about it... even at like 120km/h its probably only going to be like 10km/h off at the most... i could do the math for you if you'd like... but i'm running 175/70/13's... and i don't have much trouble...(my trouble comes with it being in mph while i live in a country that uses km/h... )
  20. i believe the normal tire size on the older subies is 175/70/13... if you're looking to replace your old tires, i'd go with that size... its more common then the 155's...
  21. maybe if it was the subaru 4x140 turned into the new gen 5 lug... then i might be interested... doing that conversion isn't the easiest to do... then we could run wrx wheels and the what not without changing out our entire front strut assembly...(heck i could even run it on my 79... ) then i could have the 5 lugs for the street and summer and what not, then put my 4 lug suby rims on during the winter for the snows...
  22. pleanty of sound! and i am running the original alt... i'm only running a 150W RMS system using a pioneer 2 channel amp that is bridged... and i had to trim the center consol a little bit... so it didn't rub... this sub doesn't move as much as a bigger sub...and the trim on the sub is quite large... and it is centered inbetween the seats... i tried to center it as well as i could... but its pretty darn close...
