  1. Out of curiosity, I emailed CCR asking how much a 2.2L engine was. I got a return email back today with an attached PDF file of the quote. With the $375 core charge the rebuilt 2.2L is $3570. This quote failed to say if shipping was included in the price so it could be even higher. Quote Date 2/18/2008 Quote # 96 Name / Address Colorado Component Rebuilders, Inc. 5861 Marion Street Denver, CO 80216 Rep Project Total Description Qty Total 2.2L Legacy engine 3,195.00 Core Deposit (refundable) 375.00 Colorado State/Local sales tax 0.00 $3,570.00
  2. Can you imagine less than 4 years later CCR is now charging $3570 for a rebuilt 2.2L?!!! That's absolutely rediculous. They charge a $375 core charge too. People are swapping a 2.5L for a 2.2L. Why charge a core charge on a completely different engine? Maybe they know this and will only accept a 2.2L engine as the core? Who in their right mind is going to go through the trouble of palletizing their 2.5L engine, taking it to a shipper, paying $100 or more for shipping to colorado and then hoping they refund the $375??? IMO, CCR is a very poor option now.
  3. I'm pretty sure those grooves just fit together and there are no gaskets between them.
  4. search ebay for "subaru master timing belt" and you'll find a good seller offering a nearly complete kit for the 2.2L for $189 + shipping. Good quality stuff. I used it on my 2.2L.
  5. For the record, I got my vac hose from advance auto. It has really thick walls. While removing an old hose on that little electrical/vacuum thing on the passengers strut tower, I broke off the plastic nipple. I did super glue it back on but when blowing or sucking on the nipple there was no noticable air going into or out of it. I was pretty careful not to get glue in the hole but who knows. That this is a selonoid activator?
  6. My sister in law bought an 04 impreza TS wagon. It has a nice drawtite hitch that she'll never use. I can have it if it'll fit. Will it bolt right on my 96 OBS? It looks like it will. EDIT> Looks like I posted too soon. I just checked drawtites website and they list the same part numbers for all imprezas. Nice! Now, if I can just convince her that it would be much easier to just trade cars instead of swapping the trailer hitch!
  7. my vac hoses were so hard that I could bend em and they'd snap... break. I'm assuming they were all oem hoses. The walls of the hoses were pretty thin compared to the new hose I put on.
  8. Damn... that's crazy! If it were my car, I'd stick it in a garage and crank the heat for a few days. It'll all dry out eventually. What else can you do really?
  9. thanks PC73! I replaced most of the lines today with some good quality stuff. Just for kicks, I blew through the metal lines under the throttle cable. One of them had quite a bit of liquid in it. Possibly water? I'm guessing it could have easily froze and restricted the air flow through the line. Also replaced the PCV valve (the old one seemed fine though) and reset the code by unplugging the battery. I blew and sucked on the EGR vaccum hose and could hear it opening/closing. I'm assuming it is fine. Will fill up the gas tank and check MPG again. Hopefully it goes up from its current 14.5 mpg and the cel stays off! Weird thing is... the car always starts and runs fine... even with the cel on and the po400 code. On the passengers strut tower there is a device that has a 3 prong electrical connection and 1 vaccum line going to the bottom of it. What is that?
  10. The CEL came back on today. I'm found one cracked vaccum hose and "fixed" it. I probably have other cracks that I can't see. I'm going to get a bunch of new hose and just replace all the old vaccum hoses. They're hard like plastic now. Dumb question... is there any need to use the steel line sections that go under the throttle cable? I'm thinking it would be safer and easier to eliminate these possibly rusted and blocked lines from the vaccum system. I'll run the new rubber lines OVER or behind the throttle and use zip ties to keep them away from moving parts.

  12. If you've got $5k into the car already and are hoping for a trouble free 100k miles... why put it back together with an iffy head? Maybe you can get another head from a junkyard and have it machined? At this point you'd be nuts to 1/2 a$$ it.
  13. were the pits there before you dropped the head off? If it were my head I would have pointed out the pits and asked if they were going to be an issue ...before any work was done?
  14. AGreed. also, the dealer will probably charge subaru for both HGs under warranty and the $300 they charge you will just be extra cake in their pocket.
  15. njdrsubaru told me that info. I may have mistaken him though. Hopefully, he'll be along to clue us in. He's done many suspension swaps and seems to know what's up.
  16. from what I've read and been told, you have to use outback struts on a legacy and forester struts on an outback. You can't use forester struts on a legacy.
  17. on my 96 obs auto the car doesn't have to be running but the battery can't be completely dead either. Look in your manual glossary for "shiftlock" and it will tell you what to do. Mine... I turn the ignition on, step on the brake and I can hear the "click" of the shift lock opening. The car does not have to be running.
  18. My 96 obs 2.2L gets 14.5 mpg in the city. It's a horrible waste of money. CEL not on.
