the possible death of the sedan
I say do what you can to fix this one up, AND get the coupe. If you can get a solid coupe for cheap, jump on it!!! But if you can save the one you have for the price of your time, do that too!!

Spewing Coolant - Now Part Of The HG Club
bratman18 replied to Durania's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI honestly don't know. I just know that this is EXACTLY what mine was doing, and it was the HG's:-\. These won't mix with the oil, because the phase 2 2'5's have external leaks. You may not be seeing any leaks yet, but I bet there is some sort of leak there, it just isn't really showing yet. Just make sure that you let it cool down and top the radiator AND the overflow back off, so it never gets hot. My old RS is still thriving with it's new owner. He replaced the HG's and it's going strong!!

bratman18 replied to Durania's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell definitely try the radiator cap first. Just grab one off another similar Subaru and see if it works. If it doesn't, then I'd say it's the HG's. Man I really feel for ya. I tried the additive on mine. It prolonged it a little, but it still did the same thing to an extent

Swap 2.5 turbo for H6 in 2005 Outback
I think the STi motor swap would be real doable. They are very close. But to go with an H6, it would be quite a bit of work with wiring

bratman18 replied to Durania's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI was dreading you posting about this eventually. It may be the radiator cap, but my guess is the HG. That's what mine did pretty much the whole time I had it. Spewed coolant outta the overflow. And as long as I replenished it when it cooled down, it would never get hot, but it was the head gaskets. Good luck man!!

Forrester turbo died
bratman18 replied to koneall's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAs long as it was on the exhaust side it would have been fine, and it kinda sounds that way. I didn't think it had anything to do with the banjo fitting, again, that has only been a problem on the other style block (Legacy GT, Outback XT, and Baja XT) Glad it's all good now!! Hopefully it stays that way!!

It finally goes
That looks amazing!! Great job

question, how to blow a fuse
bratman18 replied to bheinen74's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf you remove the fuse you are asking for problems if you ever get in a wreck and someone investigates. Chances are, no one will, but if they find you deliberately removed the ABS fuse and therefore had no working ABS, they might make a stink and then you insurance company will fight it all the way.

Need your opinions on 04 Forester XT
bratman18 replied to Vmax540's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX^Headgaskets are not an issue on the turbo Foresters. I'm not saying it's never happened, but as a rule, the N/A 2.5's are the ones with the issues, and not the turbo'd ones. Oh and book value on mine with 78k on it and it's a 5spd is 11,500, it will be a bit less for the mileage on this one, and the fact it's an auto. I paid 9500 for mine

bratman18 replied to Vmax540's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou'll love it. The auto's are great in these and the motor is very reliable. You will have to run at least 91 octane in it, the turbos don't like the lesser grade. It would be a good idea to use synthetic oil when doing oil changes, other than that, the maintenance is about the same as any other Subaru. Timing belt is due at 100k, so yeah try to get him to do it. It's not a bad price, but it could be better, so if you can get that stuff to be done, it would be better for you. It doesn't have serpentine belts, it has the same old 2 belts on the front, and then the timing belt behind the cover.

Rust-Free PNW cars- The End is Nigh!
That's BS. Salt doesn't work. It melts the ice and snow, and then it will just freeze again, it does here anyways. Sand does work, they might have to actually use a little more of it, but it works, or just leave the some snow on the roads, that is also great traction. Another idea, use pea gravel like they use in many parts of Europe!! They spread that on the roads and there is plenty of grip, then in the spring they sweep it back up and re-use it!!!! The only down side is they all have braws on their cars to protect from rock chips in the paint. Just my .02
