Remove the interior liner of the hatch and take out the key cylinder (not difficult at all!)--soak it in penetrating oil and give it a good scrubbing. It's amazing how much dirt and crud gets in there--I don't know how the tumblers moved at all! After rinsing, drying and re-lubing I put it back in . . . it worked like a brand new lock. Good luck.

FYI, the 2.2 liter (EJ22) engine was NON-interference from its introduction through the '96 model year. From '97 MY on, it was an INTERFERENCE design.

A neat trick some folks do--pull a pair of Subaru OEM axles from a junkyard and clean, re-grease, re-boot and install them. Then clean/re-grease/re-boot the old axle(s) and put them on the shelf for future use.

I would think the play is not normal--but I'm no tranny/axle expert. Maybe one of our gurus will take a look and chime in. Reason I asked about the axles is that sometimes aftermarket ones can be problematic.

Is that first axle you showed an aftermarket (non-Subaru) one?

Hi Bill R, welcome to the USMB! Since your car is brand new, I'd suggest you take it back to the dealer ASAP and have them fix it. (And if they try to tell you it's "normal" ask to drive another new Forester to see if it feels the same.) At least that will get the problem documented and on record. Sounds like you're off to a good start. You might try cleaning the MAF--but do so very gently and carefully! O2 might be worth trying. Good luck--keep us informed!
