Over from the older generation group. I'm looking at a 2003 Outback H6 3.0 with 145K on it. I know nothing about these newer engines or cars for that matter. What to look for? Concerns with these engines or the mileage on it? I'm told that 95% of it is open road/highway driving as a commuter vehicle. How many miles do these things go. I know the older EA81's will go indefinately with the proper periodic maintenance but how about these things? Thanks.

I have a rear window defroster setup that has 2 leads going to the element. Recently the system has not been working. When the dash switch was in the on position the indicator light didn't come on as showing the system was working. I checked both element lead wires with a test light and found that only one lead has juice to it when the dash switch is on. I cleaned both leads and plugged them both back in and nothing. No indicator light on the dash switch. I unplugged the lead from the element that had no juice to it and turned the dash switch on and got an indicator light. WTF? Can the element function with just one lead plugged inand supplying power?

I had a p/b 5 speed in an '88 EA82T wagon and loved it. I ran 205/60-15's with no lift and the car never let me down. To date it may be the most dependable vehicle I ever owned. That thing was awesome in the snow. Never did any hard off-road with it so I couldn't comment on that, but for a road piece I loved it. If the PennDOT winter road pre-treatment hadn't done in the underside I'd still be driving it.

Vehicle painting vs. weather seasons

Yep........regular automotive acrylic enamel. -
Have the Brat ready for paint. I live in Pennsylvania and for those of you not in our part of the country its been incredibly cold as of late. Long range projections show no significant relief either. While I know that the car will be in a heated garage for some period of time before, during and after prep and painting I can't help but think its better to hold off until warmer days are the norm. Any thoughts on painting vehicles in extreme cold?

ea 81 dash speaker upgrade 3"-3.5" ?
ettev replied to scoobyclimbs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Eliminate the dash speakers and run a better speaker in your doors as the front channel. Add a set of truck box speakers behind the seats as the rear channel and your set. http://www.flickr.com/photos/26905545@N07/sets/72157605926523746/detail/?page=7 -

Looking for EA81 engine rebuild kit.
ettev replied to bdmartin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If there's an automotive machine shop in your area they usually can get rebuild stuff for anything. Trust me, I've ordered some REAL odd ball stuff. -
Here are the door mounted (front channel) speakers: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113KFC1687/Kenwood-KFC-1687.html?o=m&c=10&tp=95&s=0&a=0 They are Kenwood #KFC-1687 3 way 6 1/2". Power range 2 - 50 watts RMS. Peak power 200 watts. Impedance is 4 ohm. The rear channel boxes are Pioneer TS-TRX5 and are double 6" within a poly sound box. I did a web search but couldn't find any free spec data. Here's what's on the speaker box: Nominal Power 50 watts Max Music Power 150 watts Impedance is 4 ohm

Mods, I'm asking for a favor in that you please don't move this to the stereo forum, it doesn't look like anybody ever visits or posts there. Situation: I have the following Pioneer receiver/CD unit I'm going to be installing in my Brat: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/CarAudioVideo/Source/CD-Players/DEH-1400?tab=B. It's a 45W x 4 channel unit and I'd like to run a bit more power output. I'm a complete dullard when it comes to what car amps actually do and even more so as to which would be right for me. I'd like to keep it an all Pioneer system so here's the link to the amps: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/CarAudioVideo/Amplifiers I don't need anything elaborate, just something to push 4 speakers with a bit more umpf so it can hear the radio over the cherry bomb muffler. I have upgraded the door speakers and I'm going to be running "behind-the-seat" truck box speakers. I've removed the in-dash stock speakers and am not replacing them. I will run the door speakers as my front channel and the behind-the-seat boxes as my rear channel. Question: Which Pioneer amp will fit the bill? Can I use one of the lower priced GM Amps that they make, and if so which one? Here are some pics of the audio mods so far: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26905545@N07/sets/72157605926523746/detail/?page=7 Thanks.

I just traced and verified all my stock radio speaker wire plug connectors this past weekend. If I can remember I'll post my findings tonight.

I followed this procedure and it went great: http://random.removed.us/altswap.html

Doubtful. They are either good or bad. No in between. -
oiling the underbody of a car
ettev replied to bheinen74's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That NAPA chain and cable lube you use is in a spray bomb isn't it? If so that makes the process less cumbersome. How about everyone else? With regular oil how do you apply it? Do you thin it with kerosene or something first? Spray it on out of a garden sprayer or what? -

ettev replied to bheinen74's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Same here in Pennsylvania. This new stuff is not only killing vehicles but its also rotting out our reinforced concrete roadways and bridges. My inspection mechanic tells me that it literally is rotting cars away from the belly upward and our state highway department has undertaken more "emergency road and bridge repairs" than I ever remember prior to them using this crap. -
Would a rear seat out of a mid-80's EA81 sedan/wagon work? Might be easier to modify than something from a different manufacturer.

I had the same questions. Oiling doesn't make sense to me. How is it done? Do you guys use motor oil in a garden sprayer and blow it all over the belly of the beast? What kind of oil do you use? If I'm going to go thru the trouble of spraying something on the underside it's going to be something that doesn't wash off. -
OK, I've read this in several posts already. Please expalin what you guys do to oil the underside. Do you blow it all over the undercarrige with a pump sprayer or what? What kind of oil do you use? Standard motor oil, synthetic, etc?

Who is the USMB member that makes these? I remember seeing someone post that they did this.

want a new exhaust. ideas?
ettev replied to crazylong127's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
About 125 miles north of you on I-81 in Pottsville. I work in Harrisburg which isn't too far from Frederick. Just a quick ride up Rt. 15 to I-83. I haven't taken this to work yet and probably won't until I get it painted in a couple of weeks. I'm usually around home on weekends if you want to take a ride up. This weekend if its warm enough outside I'll be prepping it for paint. A friend of mine does exhaust work at his garage. He did the install for me. I just told him what I wanted.
