  1. Not much to look at, but here's my "shop"... it sucks when it rains Next purchase for the "shop",... giant tarp & sheet of plywood!
  2. So if I use Conklin's Convoy 10W-30,... my oil results will show wear because of the presence of zinc? Zinc is listed on the MSDS... http://www.conklin.com/products/msds/50294.msds.pdf rtcaravan quoted: " just like royal purple, now they advertise they have zink added into the oil. why would you add a metal to your oil, to make your motor wear out faster? royal purple test results come back as used oil! thats new out of the bottle! "
  3. Congratulations! Great news! Cool pics too!
  4. i have read in a thread that one cannot over-tighten the castle-nut. (please chime in, anyone...) I had a similar problem but front DS. I literally jumped up and down on the wrench, took a 4' cheeter bar to it. then I drove for 50 miles, inspected, and sure enough, more tightening was required. Not much more, but enough to insert the cotter pin one more notch over and tighter on the castle nut. And for good measure, I lifted the front-end to take the weight off the axle/wheel in case this would prevent further tightening... it worked well End result: no more noises! I have no idea if replacing the conical washer & nut will make any difference. I believe the FSM calls for replacing the washer each time its removed... i could be wrong though...
  5. There are two FFs. One on passenger's side, under the car by rear tire, and the other is under the hood, driver's side. What do you mean the FF is getting air in it?
  6. That's one hell of an upgrade! Congrats man! Looks killer! Bet she drives a little differently, huh?!?! Btw, did a board member buy your '82 wagon?
  7. throttle bushings are located inside the throttle body of your carb, the lowest portion. It sits up against your intake manifold... here's the link to my thread and a pic for reference... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=98105 Bump for the Carburetor Gods to chime in...
  8. Both FFs? maybe choke related? How does it run when it's not warmed up... rich or lean? Does adjusting the idle mixture and idle speed screws help at all? You mentioned rebuilding the carb... i presume you adjusted the float level to 10.5mm (7/8"), or close to that... Shot throttle bushings can be a major vac leak... with my hitachi, this vac leak wouldn't appear until the engine got hot... then it would be a PITA to get it started again when all warmed up... Just throwing things out there... hoping General Disorder will chime in here soon... GD has helped me out tremendously with these stupid HiCrappies... I know it stinks waiting for a reply, but it's the weekend and you should get a flow of answers and suggestions here soon... hang in there...
  9. Welcome! You'll find this to be the best place on the internet for anything Subaru related! Sounds like you have a Hitachi carb... I'm sure if u do have a hitachi, most here will tell you to SPFI or Weber it... let me tell u,... I weberized my 84 gl wagon (just this past week as a matter of fact...), ... worth every penny! Idles like a dream and purrs like a kitten... I was sick and tired of tweaking the Hitachi to get it to run half-way decent... After Weberizing it, it's like a new engine... it really brought the EA81 to life... Tell us what you have under the hood and I'm sure you'll find a wealth of information in the replies... do you have a black or blue kidney-bean shaped air filter housing?
  10. I've been pondering that same question... My thought on this only works if it's also difficult to start when warmed up, but not turned over immediately, like 10 minutes later or so... like it was with mine... My guess is there's expansion of the metal at that temp to the point where the shot bushing (or dying bushing) reveals itself. When cold, the contraction of the metal sort of resists the effects of the dying bushing...? just a thought
  11. You describe the exact symptoms that I had with my Hitachi. My secondary throttle shaft bushing crapped out on me. Gas was seeping out of it. Here's the thread with a pic of the area... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=98105 I found it by having somebody else crank it. I was on driver's side, looking at the throttle body of the carb just above the intake manifold. Flashlight helps and air filter housing off. Could have nothing to do with it but that's my recent experience. Hope it helps. Good luck!
  12. That is a great description of what I was trying work out in my head from post#4. Thanks GD. I wonder if anyone is currently running it like you describe. What would a suitable fitting material be? Or what should I avoid?
  13. I don't know what to say... I have tears in my eyes... Many, many thanks!
  14. cause I needed a car and it was $500. But now I would never consider buying anything else... got the illness I guess...
  15. I can't figure out how to save this file... tried everything Is anyone willing to hook me up? I can provide my email if you'd like... Thanks! Fred
  16. ^^:lol::lol:^^ There's gotta be a forehead dent on the top of that cab!
  17. Good call on trying the urethane paint thinner... will do. I also give a few other household goodies a try. I'll post my results if eventful.
  18. I want your Soob! Seriously, best of luck with the resto! Seems like a ton of fun! I'll be keeping an eye open for your updates...
  19. That's a sweet Soob! Don't get rid of it! You'll figure out how to squeeze 5 in there! go to the JY and pull the jump-seats out of a Ford Ranger, install in the back of cargo area, and walaah... seating for two more...
  20. I am embarking on solving my windshield leak (84 GL wagon). After getting the dash off, I came across a bunch of expandable foam. I managed to carve much of it out, but needless to say, there remains quite a bit. I want a clean area to work with... Does anyone know off a quick simple solution. I know the "cleaner" it is sold with does a decent job (toluene i think), but does it work on dried old foam? Would 70 % or higher alcohol work? WD40 or carb cleaner...? I am trying also not to make a stinking mess, more like spot clean, slowly until its all gone... I also would like to be kind to the windshield gasket... thanks!
  21. Welcome fellow Wagoneer! I like your ride! Rust doesn't seem too bad on her... Welcome and keep us posted on your progress... How bout under the hood? Is it still running the HiCrappy carb?
