Going to look into staying in a hotel somewhere nearby. I saw the suggestions for the locally situated ones. Don't have a clue whether they are booked up yet or not. Does anyone have a town recommendation? If I do get a room, I welcome crashing to the tired or a place to go to later for the more awake people of the crowd. Jay

power windows 87 turbo wagon
gravelRX replied to 86subaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a problem with my window switches on the 87 RX and took the switches ALL the way apart. The contacts in the switches were ugly with carbon(?) and gunk. Cleaned the contacts, carefully reassembled and they all work. Pretty straight forward, pay attention to how they come apart. Good Luck, Jay -
Dammit,These rallycrosses are only a winding closed course maked by big tires, high grass and trees. I don't recall any cones, but I'm sure they were there to mark course direction. If you go off course usually end up being a DNF because of damage or stuck car. Straight timed runs. Penalties for cones. Yeah, I'm sure there were cones. Harpua, I'll take some pictures and Email them to you of the grill and such when I get another digital camera. Mine was stolen Fri. night. I do run in 4wd when rallycrossing the GL. Seems to be easier to control braking when you can gear down and drag all four. Didn't say it was the fastest, just easier. Oil from the breather, back to the intake and straight into the cylinder. Makes for a BOND type show. Ugh. So embarrassing. I have since fixed this problem

Find an older sube with the 3rd eye and take everything, relay switch, etc. For the install, take the welded-in front brace in the middle of the radiator support and chop in out. Insert the older crossmember that holds the light in. Mine bolted right up, the hole were already there. then mark the grill and break out the dremel. I ended up taking it out because I installed the winch bumper and the third eye set-up is specific for that bumper. I still have all the goodies, including the modified grill. Jay

Yup, totally forgot. got a good talking to by the marshal too. Did pretty good. Was grouped in MU4( modified WRX's, Eclipses with all the goodies, etc) with a class of 20. Came in 5th. Woo. I was pleasantly surprised. Jay

Had fun. Working on the RX to have more fun. Jay Does anyone see the blatant disregard for rules in this picture?

I kept getting a speed sensor code on my 87 RX when pulling long hills and accelerating steadily. My parts car is an 88 Turbowagon. Swapped the gauge cluster from the 88 to the 87 and so far nothing has stopped working, smoked, or caused that wonderful burning smell. The center section of the cluster with the car outline is swappable so I kept all the indicators for the center lock and low intact. Now every time I want to know how many miles the car really has on it I'm going to have to do the math. I had heard that the speed sensor was removable and I could just swap the part, but this was easier and my 2 1/2 year old got to help. The mileage error won't be a problem because I'm going to drive this one until it dies. Whether it be a sharp, crunchy death or a slow, sputtering one. So FYI, you can swap gauge clusters from an 88 to an 87. Jay

Checked the crank and cam sensors, replaced the coil pack, and the igniter. Same problem as described in the first post. I have eliminated the fuel system from the equation because of the way the car acts. It's breaking up in the ignition somehow. Hard to explain what it's doing. It's getting worse though. After the car warms up to op. temp. it acts like the ignition is cutting out for some cylinders. Bad miss, engine shakes violently when you attempt to give it throttle. Will die quicker now than before. Will not idle after reaching op. temp. A subaru mechanic guessed the ignition relay when I explained the problem. Same shop, talked to another tech and he guessed the same without hearing the first guys response. How would it effect the car if this was bad? They both tried to explain where it is and what it looks like but I'm at a loss. FSM picture or info anyone? Today was a bit of a trail. I hate losing my temper at anything or anyone, especially an inanimate object, but this problem is really starting to get to me. For Sale as is. 1200.00 is closer to what I really want to do with it. Deep Breath. Diagnosing is the hard part. Fixing is easy. Rant, Jay BTW, I was just positive that it was the igniter. I even posted it as a fix for the same problem for someone else on the board. Jeez.

i've got an 86 hatch and it has speakers in the dash. One is between the air con. vents, this one is thin. Then there is the one to the far left under the vent. For what it's worth. The dashes due seem to vary quite a bit. Sat night. Jay

You can raise the rate of the front springs by compressing them (raise front,) I think. PRELOAD? I'll check for sure. Jay

Small world. Good tips in Car Construction. Jay -

Check for codes on the ECU. This is, like someone said above, heavily related to the distributor. I believe if you do the green, double bladed connector for the ECU you should hear the pump run. For that matter do you hear the pump when you initially turn the key? For 5-7 sec or so? BytheSea is close to the money shot. Jay

I typed this post topic in and went to review post and it looked fine. When I actually posted it I got the big Red death X, so I replied to my own post and added a link to the picture and messed that up too. So I went into edit and changed both posts to read , basically I'm an idiot tonight, moderators kill the post. Checked back in and the link is working, my reply to myself is gone and I've got the answer to my question. Jeez, what was in that bottled water I just drank? Jay -
Note that this refers to placing myself in a comfortable prone position anywhere that isn't an imposition after much beverage consumption. I agree whole heartedly. We need to play somewhere close to a hotel/ motel if we plan on imbibing. Your yeah yeah comment makes me think you aren't up to 10am EJ? Is anyone going to stay in a hotel nearby? Maybe we should coordinate that so we can play in the same place, or at least close. Regards, Jay

Don't know anything about the car or Rally, just thought it was quasi-cool. Anyone got their research hat on? Jay

Under the steering wheel? That has a relay mounted on it that controls the int. and the park. It's a black box with a blue connector. had mine off checking the ECU while troubleshooting and the symptoms were the same. you have to disconnect it to remove the panel completely. Not trying to stir anything up but I noticed three separate and distinct answers on this question including mine. Curious to see what it is because I usually heed the advice of Q and Skip respectively. Morgan has a good suggestion for the K.I.S.S. method too. Although I seldom see the easy things until I'm struggling with the most difficult, unneeded fix. Regards, Jay

More likely to take over a good autocross locally. They run at a small airport near Roanoke, Va. once a year. Had my 86 Capri to 90+ on the longish straight. Much faster and hairier than your run of the mill autocross. Most of the autocrosses around here are technical, car control sorts of events. Not that that's a bad thing. Will look into track time requirements at VIR and Summit. Most of my time is spent on firebreaks and National park access roads in the wee hours of the AM. Bro in law recons with a two way radio. One way in, one way out. The wildlife is another story. Jay
