  1. So I have a stock '90 Legacy and I'm putting OBW struts on it from a '96 or so(just swapping top hats for the rear struts) will this affect the camber? And if so what will I need to do to make it right? I have some 205/60/R15 tires that are going to go on it as well not sure if that helps or not.
  2. well Fairtax you're lucky it's minivans causing the accidents.... here it's dang SUV drivers think they are tanks and get over confident then end up killing somebody because of it. and on another note.... that sucks ericem if you had under/uninsured on your insurance a lot of times it won't replace your car but will provide you with health insurance.
  3. Yeah PNW is a pretty good place to get a soob, they are cheaper on average and the bodies tend to be in better shape.
  4. as far as....? engine and tranny and everything is pretty much the same on them. a few body tweaks here and there plus there is LS and L lines for the bodies but mechanically they are dang near identical.
  5. Yeah I may just fix the damage to mine instead of getting a new one can't find a decent body out there none the less a LS body. And I'm spoiled by a non leaking fully functioning moon roof lol.
  6. aww i was hoping it would be lifted and negate that work... lol oh well... I guess my main question is if has compression issues will it be hard to fix and will it cost a lot and if other things(mostly if other things that are more $$) that they aren't saying (or don't know about) could be making it smoke?
  7. ohhh a 95 outback auto was just listed.... they have the 2.2 so that's looking good right now... do they have the same lift as other OBWs?
  8. Yeah I plan to do that it's cause they said they called dealers and asked what they would charge they said one said 1500 and the other 1700 cause of the miles (248k) But on craigslist I haven't found one for under 2100 haha. and The salvage value they got from calling a company that does salvage auction and that's what they said they'd get for it. at this point I'd be happy for them to settle at $2000 but I'd only get $1000 after the $500 for buyback and $500 deductible (though I may get the deductible back if the person has insurance). Also may have to go with a '94 5spd touring wagon that ShawnW found for $1300(mileage 200k) though it has a new clutch. although I did find a '92 auto for $900(188k) but they said it smokes due to poor compression should I trust it? the other '90 auto for $1000(205k) needs a new head gasket and a new cv joint. any ideas?
  9. grr the insurance company just called and said my car's value was $1550... wow.... lol I can't find a vehicle in running condition same year or not for that much without serious body rust... lol then they said the salvage value was $500 so if i keep it for my engine I get diddly :/.
  10. that's not the worst I've seen I saw a dealer say 93 subaru legacy with VTEC 4 cyl. I was like wtf?! I don't trust this car already!
  11. ok so what are some things to worry about when test driving and stuff, I mean obviously if it slips it's a no go but what other things might give it away? and by maintained you mean changing the oil every 30k or so? or what?
  12. Oh ok thanks for the input Yeah ShawnW is most likely going to be doing the Work so just wanted to get some info and waiting (will prolly find out monday) on the insurance I have uninsured/under-insured insurance and they will total it out then i'll just buy it back if the person doesn't have it the only prob i see with it now is the guy wasn't listed on the police report and the car he left (as it couldn't drive) was registered to some woman and it's listed as possibly stolen. So not sure how that will work out. And what are these options GD paddle shifters and the solenoid? is that standard on the tranny or no? I mean I'm sure I can go over it with Shawn when the time comes just wondering. Yeah Grossgary I'm more for function as well just had a string of bad auto tranny's with some domestic cars so was always a bit wary of them which is why I was asking. I don't plan on doing too much 4 wheeling with it though I will put outback struts and springs on it to lift it and putting some 15" rims on it to get me where i need to go when I go camping and hunting. And definitely thanks for your input.
  13. So I currently have a 90 5spd legacy wagon but it was hit by a drunk driver who left on foot and I need to basically transplant my motor and tranny into another vehicle. But there isn't a decently priced 5sp body fro sale right now they are all 4eat and one is a spitting image of my car except its 4eat and needs new head gaskets. So I'm wondering if it would be best to wait it out until one does pop up, or to to get that one and do a manual conversion, or to just keep the tranny and swap the engines out. Also just looking for the pros and cons of 4eat vs. the 5 spd manual.
  14. heh I've pulled people out as well with my legacy but I think he was saying he wished he could pull people out for 3 days just for fun lol. Well I haven't done anything to my 90 legacy yet (besides clutch and timing kit) but I got hit by a drunk driver last night and now need to replace pretty much all the passenger side rear quarter + the bumper he ran off on foot and i think they ended up getting him but have to wait for a week for my insurance to get the police report, the good thing is I do have unisured/underinsured property and medical coverage so if it ends up being bad with him and no insurance I can do that though it's a $500 deductable. Other than that bad news I do plan on lifting it with some outback struts and springs and putting some 16" steelies on it from a forester or outback.
  15. you know this sounds a lot like my car my clutch went out the pilot bearing was done for and also my tensioner on the A/C pulley broke right know that hasn't been fixed due to just not having the part ready (getting it from ShawnW) and it's not in demand haha.
  16. Yeah you did good with just a washer left over just finished mine and I have a bolt and an accessory belt left over . My pilot bearing was out too
  17. Oh yeah really that seems the best way to go now... spent so much time on that today and still didn't get one of the bolts so will probably spend some two hours getting one of them tomorrow (why do they need to hide them?! )... other than that the only thing left is the battery, the starter, and the two coolant hoses to the transaxle.
  18. less than an 1/8th of an inch lol. like I said enough to grab it but not to thread it and we moved the hole back and forth and such but it's like the mount is angling the bolt at such an angle (straight) that it wont thread cause the engine isn't flat.
  19. We did jack up the trans the trans and engine are connected we're now trying to get the engine mounts back onto the engine because at first we just unscrewed the nut on the bottom of the mount so the bolt kinda hung down but we weren't able to get that to go back in because of the angle it was like the engine and trans had to go back more which it couldn't. so then we just took the mounts off the engine and we're lining it up that way it's a lot better but still no dice the hole is lined up enough to grab the bolt but not enough to start the bolt and the passenger side is the same going in from the top its so very close but not quite... it's like engine is tilted to far forward to line up perfectly but raising the back end with a jack under the tranny isn't doing it... and lowering the engine all the way isn't lined up enough plus we cant move the engine at all haha.
  20. hehe yeah the problem we came across today is getting the engine mount bolt into the mount hole seems cause of the angle of the engine (front is higher than the rear) that they wont line up, have tried to raise the transmission but didn't solve it. any ideas?
  21. Oh you'll want one when it goes out and you can't drive it anymore. And this is exactly what my car was doing before it quit and it was actually the pilot bearing of all things so it could be that (either way might as well replace everything since you're in there) but TOB sounds more since it was squealing and mine wasn't. I can understand your reluctance to do the clutch as they are a pain in the bum but it's something that should be done. Clutch kits vary usually they start around $150 and go on up, another thing to consider is prices on flywheels if it needs to be replaced due to cracks and such, engine coolant if you're pulling the engine or tranny fluid if your going that way (not recommended if you can help it) and random other stuff to do while you got it up in the air. This link http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=116167 has some good stuff on what else to do while it's in the air.
  22. So a bit of an update it was the pilot bearing that went out just replaced the whole clutch and tomorrow we're gonna drop the engine in and hopefully be done with it!
