  1. Snowman

    Bad Night.

Ditto what Morgan said about driving it home and swapping engines. Mine made it about 10 miles after #3 started knocking, so you might just make it! This engine is not worth rebuilding at this point anyway (you'd have to machine the crank and all kinds of stuff).
  2. Does the A/C work correctly? Have you checked all the belts? All I can think of off the top of my head is that once the A/C comes on, the water pump is no longer being turned, causing the overheat.
  3. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=39822 A guy from Australia converted his EJ22 to a distributor-style ignition so that he could run propane instead of gasoline. If it's ease of installation/servicing you're looking for, trust me when I say that the stock EJ22 fuel/ignition system is NOT hard to hook up.
  4. I can email you the engine section of the 89 FSM in two parts if you want.
  5. Use a small chisel to remove the cone washer. Works every time.
  6. You should be able to get a title for it by posting bond. It takes a little while and will cost a few $$$, but it's really not too bad. I had to do it on a 91 loyale that was given to me two years ago with no title (found that out after I had taken posession of the car).
  7. Make sure the gaskets you get are the metal-type with a stout metal ring around the inside. There are different kinds, and that's the only type that actually works.
  8. So, could you take it apart into like five pieces and get it for "parts"? (You might think I'm kidding, but I'd do it if I was close enough.)
  9. I've been told it's usually that vacuum solenoid that goes bad. Put 12v to it and see if it clicks.
  10. Paul, you got any that you want to get rid of (like that you have two copies of or something)?
  11. Maybe you left the green connectors plugged in? TPS is a possibility...have you tried checking for codes yet?
  12. That's nothing compared to turning it into a "GL Type R" with one of those stickers from Mal-Wart!
  13. Not to be a party pooper, but did you ask them what makes it so special? Unless there is some huge difference in size or design, I would tend to believe that it's just slick marketing.
  14. I'm not sure if it would fail catastrophically right away if you had different ratios, but it would be difficult to drive and would place an incredible amount of stress on all the driveline components, which would eventually fail.
  15. What did you use to cut out the adapter plate?
  16. The rear differential has a different ratio on the M/T cars (3.9 instead of 3.7), and I believe, but I'm not positive, that the driveshaft is a different length. I don't know if it's possible to pull the engine and tranny at the same time. However, it's really easy to pull them separately.
  17. Hmm, that's a bit of a predicament... Can you twist the pump back and forth, or does it not budge at all? Maybe try GENTLY tapping it with a rubber mallet and see if it loosens up.
  18. To tow the car with all four on the ground, you would need to remove the rear driveshaft and the front axleshafts. If the transmission is spun by the output shafts for any length of time, it will not be lubricated properly and damage will occur. Probably the easiest thing to do is get a tow dolley...then you only have to remove the rear driveshaft.
  19. Welcome to the board! The tranny swap is pretty straightforward on these cars. Just get a Chiltons or Haynes manual and dive in. The 4wd is engaged by a vacuum solenoid on the pushbutton cars. If you're interested, it's not a lot of work to convert it to a 5-speed manual tranny that has dual-range 4wd. There's a little bit of extra stuff, but it's really not that much more work and the result is 10X better than the old crappy soob auto tranny. (That's one thing I'll admit Subaru screwed up...their old auto trannies just plain suck.)
  20. If you already removed the flywheel, it would probably take less time to put it back on the engine than to come up with a way to time the cams correctly without the flywheel.
  21. Sorry Noah, Ketchikan isn't on the road system. You could take the ferry up from Bellingham to Haines and stop in Ketchikan on the way. If you make one of those shirts, I will wear it!
  22. That won't make any difference. The fuel system is the same. The EGR pipe goes from the back of the manifold to the head on the passenger's side and must be removed in order to swap the manifold over. It's a direct swap between those two engines. It's REALLY easy to swap the intake manifold and distributor from your 87 to the 93 engine.
  23. At what stage of assembly/disassembly is the engine? I can't think of any good ways to prevent movement yet, but I'll ponder it.
  24. Okay, so who has put an EJ engine into their old EA subaru? I know this swap is becoming very popular these days, and having done it myself, I know why. Please share your specs, stories, and pictures here, and maybe we could compile all the data into a "FAQ" thread and sticky it here, like has been done in the offroad forum. Please include what kind of car it is, what engine you put in, what transmission you are using, and what adaptations had to be made to cooling systems, exhaust systems, etc.
