  1. What nipper said. There should be a detailed list of items to be done for your 30K service in your owner's manual/maintenance schedule that came with your car. Stick with that, go to a trusted shop, keep the receipt, and your warranty will be fine. Link: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/subaru_maintenance.html#2000Maintenance
  2. I really wanted to fit a square speaker into a round hole. Thank God my wife talked me out of it after she saw me break out the sawz-all.
  3. KYB GR2 are what I'm using on both of our subarus. Great struts. To me they are slightly stiffer than stock, but not too stiff a ride. For overload coils to tow things with, the only place I have seen them is for 2000 and after at http://www.ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.aspx?CategoryID=1675&NodeID=5397&RootID=1414 maybe someone else here will get you what you need for your 99.
  4. Um, I forgot the exact model. My guess is that today's version of the Kenwoods I put in a couple of years ago is KFC-1660S. I'm driving them with the stock CD player.
  5. In both of my cars, there is only one bolt holding the tank down. Remove that bolt and the whole tank comes out without much trouble. I've had good results with hot water and Dawn soap.
  6. That part number is correct and you should probably just call them and verify. Sometimes the same part and corresponding part number is listed in various sections in a catalog. That makes the catalog longer, but easier to navigate since you may need that part for different purposes.
  7. For some reason, the US spec Legacies (BE/BH) have a slightly different front top hat and correspondingly larger diameter spring than the European and Japanese ones. The European and Japanese ones have the same dimensions as the Impreza line. Therefore, the headache you're going through. The following will fix the problem and should be about $15 a piece at your local dealer...even cheaper online if you can afford to wait for a few days for shipping. STI front top hats Subaru part number: 20323FA000 You need 2 of those. Good Luck! BTW, any spring kit meant for European and Japanese Legacies, such as, H&Rs need these top hats too.
  8. I have Kenwood 6-1/2s for all 4 doors. They were $50 a pair and from Crutchfield. They were guaranteed "direct fit" and mounted to the stock brackets with no modifications, no clearance issues, and they sound great. Crutchfield is the way to go.
  9. Factor about $300 for 4 struts, and then the rest for labor. Does the above quote include an alignment? If not, factor an alignment on top of that. I've done the struts on my wife's 1993 legacy. I got the best parts price at http://www.tirerack.com Changing struts is a pretty straightforward job if your willing to tackle that yourself and save some serious cash. Maybe a friend can help you out if it's your first time changing struts. useful links: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50268 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=60902
  10. I wouldn't worry about it. You did everything you could. I really doubt your filter's damaged. Let it sit out for a while and let the remaining water dry up. After it's dry again, you may need to add a little oil to the areas that may have taken up a bunch of water instead of oil.
  11. My wife's got Kumho Solus (I think ferret meant Solus, not "solstice") Grand Touring tires on her 1993 Legacy. She loves them. I have Kumho Ecsta ASX on mine. Also a very good tire. In our opinion, the Solus is quieter, smoother riding and longer wearing. The ASX has more grip at the expense of faster wear. I think you can't go wrong with the Solus, it's a great tire.
  12. FYI: I read this post yesterday, and today, I parked next to an early model impreza. Thinking of this post, I took the time to read the wheel size. It had 13 inch steel wheels.
  13. Also Google: Duracool Friends have used this in their old R12 systems with really good results.
  14. You can do it yourself!!! I've done it to my 93 and my 02. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=60902 IMO: I highly recommend you replace all 4 at the same time because of handling issues.
  15. Alignment sounds about right. Tire mounting and balancing are a bit high...but you live in NOVA. NOVA has a really high cost of living, so it may be a good price in your area. BTW: I hope no tire shop out there uses pure oxygen in tires.
  16. I grew up in Northern Virginia. Rust is a problem on cars along the Atlantic coast areas (Norfolk, VA Beach, etc) and to a lesser degree in Northern Virginia. Road salt is used during the occasional winter storms that come through there. If the car spent its life in western portions of Virginia, there is a lot less likelyhood of rust being an issue. The easiest may be look for sure signs of corrosion is with the help of a trusted mechanic...or find a member here from the rust belt that tell you (or share pics) where to look for rust on that particular Subaru model.
  17. Otis, to answer your question: "Why is everyone giving this guy a hard time?" He's getting grief over his comment: "Frankly, with Honda coming out with an all new CRV later this year, and the new RAV4 this year, Subaru is going to be left in the dust." He is slamming a manufacturer (in this case, Subaru) to justify his decision to purchase a different brand. It's like us going to a Jeep forum and saying that they drive crap, and Subarus are better.
  18. I used to live in the land of perpetual summers (FL). Had a dark colored car too. Getting your windows tinted to what Florida law allows will help your a/c out greatly. In Florida, if you've got a wagon, you can tint the sunroof and rear windows really dark...otherwise this chart lists what sedans can have: http://www.tintdude.com/laws.html Ask some of your friends for a reputable local tint shop recommendation.
  19. You may want to check out: www.nasioc.com There are impreza fans there that have most likely done what you are asking and can answer your question.
  20. I had my alternator crap out on me, and then my battery started acting funny within a few days. The battery had an internal short that showed up randomly, eluding tests. Towing charge next time your wife is stranded: $50 Wife's anger avoided by buying a new battery now: priceless
  21. I second the transmission cooler recommendation. You may have noticed that etrailers sells an assortment of transmission coolers as well: http://www.etrailer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=E&Category_Code=TRAN They are pretty easy, though a little messy, to install yourself. Spending about $50 on a tranny cooler for peace of mind is a good idea compared to what new/rebuilt tranny might cost.
  22. I second what Subie Gal said. My plastic cover panel was fine until the thing tore from the rear and practically ripped in half. Freeway driving would make it flutter and hit the car and scrape the road (bang...scrape...bang....scrape). If you don't off road, the 1/8 inch one does great. I have an 1/8 inch ipd aluminum skid plate and have recently had the pleasure of "testing" it on a tall parking lot curb. It worked great and lifted the front of the car off the ground. I got mine here: http://www.ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.aspx?CategoryID=1672&NodeID=5262&RootID=1414
