Calling all lifted rigs.. ground clearance ###'s
'03 outback wagon lifted via kingsprings 215/75R15's At tires dia. 28.9" Mudrat front bumper for better approach/departure angles (several inches clearance over stock) front clearance at borla header 9.75" stock exhaust was 11.00" But a small sacrifice for more torque! Rear clearance at diff. protector 11.00"

Who's got a winch?
When in doubt check it out before running the hole! I always check it out before .depth, obstacles hidden. Perhaps another rig goes before then you can guage abit how much clearance you need or a better line. No shame in gettin out of you soob and walking up and poking a stick in that hole just to be safe ... I mean most serious boaters have a depth finder/maps/channels/markers to navigate with. just common sense... Perhaps a snorkel is in your best interest if your drowning your soob and/or more lift to keep that dist. dry.

Who's got a winch?
My outback is the heaviest gen they've made yet('00-04) my '03 tank... The new gen '05-up is much lighter. I'm well over 4,000lbs! so a 6,000lb winch is good Mate that with a yellow top D35 optima and I'll be ok....

Wheelin' HoodRiver
I met up with Scrap 487 and we chk'd out some great stuff just out of HoodRiver . Fantastic views of the gorge and HoodRiver valley were just a few of the treats that awaited out mudhungry soobs....although we never found a alot of mud it was abit dry in most places. We took Country club road out of HoodRiver from (exit 62 East I-84) and followed it up several miles and turned right onto Riordan rd and headed into the woods! All I can say is Wahoo! This place was a mtn bike/motorcycle /atv/soobie heaven! Some of the folks up there erected serveral dirt bike ramps for jumping! The farther we went I just got better at every spur rd we could find... Lot's of fun hillclimbs, tight tracks, moguls, quarry pit and abit o' snow to play in too! We got snowed on for abit then the sun came out. We had a great time wheelin' !!! Here's a few pics until my camera batt. died....DOH! We even got some great video too! I did clean that hillclimb first try with my outback too! It's on video!

Hardcore trail rigs and subaru engines
as far as turbo powerband, seems like the only time you would need a lot of power you are on the gas, and on it hard. most turbos capable of 450hp are going to be spooling by 35-4000 rpm anyway which is not out of the question. lag, that is what automatics are for. I had to get an auto (4eat so my wife could drive my subie) plus none were avail. in a outback when I got it. However, I found the gears were lower in my 4eat than a 5MT and I climb alot of hills ... Just luck! Everyone disses my 4eat but hey , I have yet to see another 2gen .outback doing what I do with a 5MT either!...even an NA EJ25 with a borla has planty of torque to crank up them steeps ...but it's no rock crawler!

pieces of subaru youve left on the trail?
Within the second month of owning my new '03 outback wagon I shattered the front lower plastic"engine" protective cover and sides breakin' trail in foot and half of snow...many little pieces as crunched it over frozen glazed snow crossing over a bridge... I threw the rest in the cargo box! Then bought a Primitive skiplate! I left a bit o' paint on a tree stump somewhere at Mt.Hood and bashed my lower rad. mount good too! ( no skid on doh!). I almost lost a drivers mirror smacking a tree when I goosed it on a hunters track in mud at lolo pass ..thank God for folding mirrors! I just lost my lic. plate frame and plastic cover after backing up over brush...on the front bumper , The plates still there so that's all that matters

First baby! First Subaru?
scoobyclimbs replied to scorch's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOk, first of all 2.5L vs 2.2L is all about displacement and torque A 2.5l will have more torque to move a heavy wagon (outback)than a 2.2l both are great engines. I would go with a 2.5L outback or legacywagon for family car . You might find one that had the headgaskets done anyway. Besides its the '98-99 that were troublesome with headgaskets. by '03 no problems. Subaru recommends you add the coolant conditioner costs about $1.93 that's a cheap fix! When my wife got preggo I had to sell my beloved s-10 pu ...so I got an outback and never looked back!
-
going from big to rally style
I can give you some advice from our rally driver Paul Eklund "Primitive racing "no replacement for displacement" I agree with that! 2.5l all the way. " Torque wins races , hp sells cars.".Carroll Shelby As far as struts you might contact Subiegal at www.subiegal.com she races a wrx wagon so she knows how to set up a wagon for rally. AGX's are great !Unless you can buck up for DMS.$$$$

dune running?
DId you dyno it yet?My outback stock had 165hp .With the mods I have now I'm well past that...I dynoed mine at 108whp 118torque at the wheels! so you lose alot due to AWD! my mods to 2.5l are: WR cai, borla header 2.25" catback, Perfect power SMT6 piggy back ecu.,Perrin pulley
