  1. pics of your progress?
  2. i failed at finding aftermanket head studs for these engines. :-\
  3. i wonder why the owners manual says that for your engine. with the price of gas id stick with regualr. that mileage sounds low to me, i got 36 mpg on a good day out of my wagon.
  4. what was the redline in those rabbits anyway? they had a 1.6 right? had to be slow with no turbo and that puny engine. swap in a turbo engine from the jetta? pyrometer, boost guage, new head studs, intercooler, 2.5" turbo back straight pipe and crank up the boost maybe drop the compression with a 1 notch bigger head gasket and play with the fuel watching the EGT's.
  5. working very slowly about 3 hours a day so far. heres those intake manifold bolts i was talking about wow must have been some chemical reaction becauase the drivers side was terrible!! I can see what you mean about breaking bolts! so far so good.
  6. are there any published times or road tests from back in the day for refrence?
  7. sounds like carb problems. hows the fuel filter
  8. last i checked that was what mine was at. no ping or anything.
  9. i wouldnt get steel cable, id get synthetic, so mutch safer and easier to handle.
  10. check the clutch and check the timing belts. sounds like the starter solenoid is broken. someone here will have one
  11. doesnt mean they cant be modded. Just add a turbo retard the timing and either injectors or play with the pump. can anyone find one of these to import?
  12. the weird thing is it seems this isnt the first time its been apart. there were mixed fasteners all over and some bolts heads showed some wear. and I did throw in a new pcv before all this. the intake manifold gasket looks like it has been leaking coolant for a while as well. I have all new gaskets and timing belts and its due for both. edit why does everyone want me to run thicker oil? my oil pressure is fine, i get no lifter tick, and it runs very quiet. thicker oil is just a waste of engine power.
  13. it smokes when i start it, the head gaskets leak oil, every seal leaks, lucky you.
  14. the tube from the head to the manifold with the male flares on it
  15. current progress slow no resize for you the intake manifold bolts closest to the firewall wont bunge and im afraid to break them what size flare wrench do i need for the egr tube what size is the crank bolt socket?
  16. heads with a pre chamber, very common on older diesels
  17. ultimate engine swap id want one. I bet they are IDI though.
  18. yeah spend some money and get a detail
  19. well if its infinite then its obviously broken
  20. you checked it with an ohm meter right?
  21. what valving are you running in them?
  22. gapless rings are the best if you can afford them. especially on these smaller engines where you need all the hp you can get. thats what my engine builder told me when i asked about putting them in my jeep. I think that JE pistons are very cost effective if you go custom.
  23. bad oil pressure can wear the cam and crank bearings making the problem even worse. id like to see at least 1 bar at idle. if you get the new oil pump you at least get the peace of mind that its no longer a problem.
