at the ford dealer we would use a kind of acid and you would just spray it on and let it sit and hose it off. worked on even the worst wheels. didnt harm the clear coat either. im sorry i cant remember what it was called, it was bought in bulk.

theres a oil seperator built into the valve covers, it may be clogged up just take them off and clean them out wiht carb cleaner.

its usually press fit, except automatics are often welded.

what purpose do these serve? the diff is cast iron, i cant see a rock cracking it like an egg. i see people adding these to thier imprezas all the time.

i can answer #3 a tap sound is simply expanding and contracting. it cools at idle and warms up at speed. completly normal. a rattle is however a sign of a damaged cat
