  1. I can't believe I am posting this, but I am in total disbelief. It was sold in mid 2001 as a 2001 Legacy L with a build date of 10/00 I believe. I have owned it since June and have put about 12K on it since and the current mileage is just a hare below 58K. Last week, I got a notice from SOA that my car hadn't recieved the coolant additive band-aid treatment yet. Two days ago, I pull into the parking lot at work and there is coolant "smoke" coming from the drivers side of the hood/wheel with the smell that we all love and know. I checked the coolant and it was below the "Low" line. I filled it up to "Full" and I have been keeping a sharp eye on it. Yeah, I can still get a whiff of it here and there...especially in the wheel well and over the 2/4 cylinder head side of the engine. Other times, I can't smell it at all Is a failing HG possible even if I can't smell it all the time? No overheating... I called the dealer today to inquire about the coolant additive letter and to ask why this problem wasn't taken care of (i.e. masked) when I bought the car...the tech cut right to the chase and said they made a mistake and simply forgot. I made mention of my very recent coolant issues, and he said it probably was not coincidence and that a failing HG was a very real possibility. I seriously admired his honesty (scare tactics?) Anyhow, Car goes in Friday for a looksie so we'll see... Take care, Kevin
  2. Who had that new OBS that blew the head gaskets? I have been searching and can not find that thread. Thanks, Kevin
  3. Welcome I'm sure you will get some useful comments on this board, but I'm going to throw you over to NASIOC which is the North American Subaru Impreza Club. Free to use, and it's where you will find seats for sale as well as a ton of technical information. More specifically, check out the Tri-State Forum since that is where NJ is. We're a good bunch Take care and enjoy the new ride, Kevin
  4. Your 99 is a 5-speed as opposed to your 96 automatic? Totally different AWD systems...the FWD fuse holder is for automatics only. Hope I helped, Kevin
  5. cool, hope it works out!! BTW, the shifting pattern is not reversed if you get it from Australia. If you flush a toilet though.....
  6. Anyone see why I couldn't run a 205-60-15 on a TS that has a stock size of 195-60-15? Cheers, Kevin
  7. Hahaha, it my little secret stash If they are Speedline Safaris I will probably go with those, but then again the 98 golds are hard to come by...
  8. Chew on this for a minute...put yourself in my shoes: Months ago, you meet a guy who used to be a diehard Subaru owner. Through conversation, you learn that he has a few sets of Speedline rims and a set of stock 98 RS wheels from his ex unicorn RS sitting around that he has no use for. He used to very lighty dabble in the rally scene, and he says he bought the speedline rims wholesale in 1997 or early 1998. You express your interest in a possible purchase of a set, but don't follow up. Today, he calls you, leaves a message, and wants to know if you're interested still. He basically says they are of no use to him. So obviously, you're interested, but you can only afford one set of lets say 4 sets. Would you grab the goldies or one of the speedline sets?? Model of speedlines is unknown. Thanks, Kevin
  9. http://techinfo.subaru.com/html/ixSearchKwAll.jsp?publication_type=10&model_year=1998&vehicle_line=Forester Enjoy. Unfortunately, you have to pay now. I remember the days when you didnt have to. Kevin

  12. Yes, just use a 1/2" square drive...just make sure you remove the filler hole (top) before you drain it. I believe the front differential takes a 18mm socket, and there is no crush washer on it. By the way, what kind of ru did you get? Kevin
  13. 2Outbacks: When I first read your post I automatically thought of the front differential fluid. When I changed mine, it made a world of difference...so much quieter! I would suggest swapping the fluid out for some fresh 75W90 and go from there Hootow: you can contact SOA in a very polite manner, explain your situation, your brand loyalty, and they might chip in for half of the repairs (after you send them the invoice). They have done this for me before when the car has been out of warranty. Take care, Kevin
  14. I wouldn't be afraid of used tires. If they look decent enough, go for it.
  15. I bought a set of Forester steelies with Blizzack tires that probably had 65% life left for $150 a few years ago. Check the newspapers, the want ad publications, ect, ect...
  16. Is the steering wheel a standard Legacy GT wheel? SOA part number for that dead pedal? Thanks Jamie Kevin
  17. Yes, it was cheaper than the WRX during the GM employee pricing. I believe they were being bought from anywhere between $18K and $20K.
  18. The rims will fit fine, but the tires might be a different story. It will sit really high with those tires. Your spedometer will be thrown off, and the will most likley rub on sharp turns/parking lot stuff. Kevin
  19. I believe that Subarus are exempt from chaining up...possibly with all seasons, definately with tires that have the "severe winter use" logo on them (mountain with the snowflake in it).
  20. I just read this on specialstage.com! Sweet....there may be a WRC event 45 minutes from my house The possibilities of this are very real IMO. Author: Herb Clark The Sullivan County Visitors Association and Rally New York, Ltd. have reached an agreement to pursue a bid for a future round of the World Rally Championship. Rally New York, Ltd. is seeking approval to submit a bid to the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to host a World Rally Championship here in the Sullivan County Catskills. The FIA is interested in expanding the World Rally series especially with a location in the United States. The observation year would be slated for early 2007 with the actual event held from 2008 on an annual basis. Rally New York, Ltd. has already received approval from the Town Supervisors of the towns where the championship would be held and legislative approval from Sullivan County. “We are very interested in bringing an automobile race of this importance to Sullivan County and fully support the efforts of this experienced promoter” stated Chris Cunningham, the Sullivan County Legislative Chairman. The Sullivan County Visitors Association is working hand in hand with Rally New York seeking public and private partnerships to sponsor the event. “A World Championship event of this caliber will give Sullivan County world recognition and a substantial boost to the economy of Sullivan County, the region and the entire State of New York” said Roberta Byron-Lockwood, President & CEO of the Sullivan County Visitors Association. Ivan Orisek, President of Rally New York, Ltd. stated that the process is a two year venture with the first year being an observation event in which observers from the FIA would evaluate the rally to see if it meets specifications to be included into the World Rally Championship. The next year would be the actual event seen on TV by hundreds of millions of rally fans around the world. The economic effects of an event of this magnitude are millions of dollars during the event and residual millions due to the extreme exposure of the race. Ed Jackson, Deputy Clerk of the Course added: “This is a culmination of our five-year effort to bring rallying in the United States out of distant wilderness inaccessible to spectators and to the vicinity of New York City.” Sullivan County Catskills is a resort area located only 90 miles northwest of New York City with excellent highway access. Rally New York, Ltd. is already the promoter of Rally New York USA and International Rally New York, two of the eight events being held in the 2006 United States Rally Championship. Rally New York will seek support of ACCUS, the United States Affiliate of FIA, the United States Auto Club (USAC) and National Auto Sport Association (NASA) for the bid to the FIA.
