  3. It would be nice to know what year your car is or if it is FI or carb. With FI, it is possible a bad intake manifold gasket would cause that noise, but not an oily type smoke. If you are talking about blowby, where oil is passing by your piston rings into the combustion chamber, then you are probably due for a new engine. I personally don't believe these things are worth more than doing a head gasket job on. However, I really don't understand what you are saying and how you are diagnosing your issue. If there was air escaping from a head bolt, your engine would more than likely be up ************ creek and coolant and oil would be everywhere. Have you checked your spark plugs? air might escape and cause some misfire issues if they are not tight enough. Otherwise, your picture shows about normal Subaru oil leakage after 20 years.
  4. Sounds easier than what I was going to do. My concern was that the O2 sensor would not work properly without the cat.
  5. I am considering building a stack exhaust system for my 91 loyal. I know I've seen them on here, but I can't seem to find it using the search button. I am wanting to go 90 degrees off the cat to a cherrybomb out of the hood and maybe up an inch or two topped with one of those tractor flap things. Also, I have no emission standards where I am, so I was considering removing the cat. As long as I keep the O2 sensor, will this cause issues? If you have pics of your exhaust, please post them. P.s. the reason for those type of exhaust system is that the PO removed all of the exhaust hangers. I also like the idea of having something a little different. (Not that a lift Soob with oversized murders isn't already different!)
  6. Thanks. I finally found a thread that said Bosch was the way to go, but they are really not too picky. I just wanted to be sure before I went and bought one of those parts that could be OEM only.
  7. I really don't know an EA81 oil pump from a hole in the ground, but could you tap it with a rubber mallet or use a hammer and a 2x4? Not hard, but just enough to jar it.
  8. Sorry, I know this is another overkill question, but I want to make sure I am buying the right part. Are these cars particular to an O2 sensor in the same way they are to thermostats? Do I need to buy OEM or can I buy aftermarket? Which aftermarket ones are BEST and which to avoid? Thanks.
  9. honestly, it probably is the wheel bearings. They are super easy to do and if you already the stuff to do it, you may as well get it done. The bearings are a wear part and your car will be that much better off if you do them. I'm not sure if it is posted in your thread, but here is a link with instructions to get it done: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=77491 . Good luck and if everything goes smoothly, it should take no more than 3 hours per knuckle (including learning curve).
  10. ya, I got the felpro gasket set and I am trying to use everything in the kit so that none of it goes to waste like the valve seals. The HLA's are fine, I have no ticking or had no ticking before it came apart. I just wanted to preserve them and not get cleaner/degreaser on them while cleaning the heads. Otherwise I assume they work fine.
  11. I took both heads off of my 91 Loyale EA82 and I need to clean them. I was going to use brake cleaner, but I didn't really want to spray down the hydro lifters. I actually would like to test and clean the lifters and remove the valves too. So here are my questions: 1) How do I get the valves off? My spring compressor doesn't seem to be doing it. 2) How do I remove the hydro lifters? 3) How have you done it/ What is your experience? By the way, I'm using a spring compressor that looks kinda like a gear puller. Also, I will not go to a shop to have any work done. I want to do it my self so I know how it works and how to fix it if it breaks, etc.
  12. It would be helpful to know any symptoms, problems or leaks you have. Otherwise as far as maintenance goes, if you don't know when the timing belts were changed, do those along with all the o-rings and seals including the oil pump, maybe a water pump, valve cover gaskets, A/C and power steering belts, and any other items like that you can think of.
  13. Agreed. I suppose I could start collecting information and links for that if I could get some help from you guys.
  14. Yup, I agree also. I was one of those people who was told to go OEM and thought I could be fine with a NAPA part, which is why I have the one in the picture. I look back and wish I could have have saved $10, my sanity, and hours of lost time. That is why I posted the picture and I hope it helps at least one person.
  15. So, I know that this is a big deal here on the board, so I thought I'd throw in my $.02. I am in the middle of doing a head gasket change on my Loyale and wanted to show the difference between the Subaru OEM thermostat and the NAPA version which I can only assume is the same at other parts stores. If you ever doubted the difference or questioned whether or not to spend the extra $5.00, I hope this helps make your decision. I think the answer is obvious!
  16. Pictures update: Passenger Side Head Valves from cylinder 1 Piston 1 Piston 3 Hope this helps. Oh, plugs are BPR6ES11
  17. I really don't notice any bogging or lag. The car is kinda a gutless wonder, but I guess that's just the EA82. I suppose I can put it back together and see how it runs before I worry too much since everything else looks fine. And thanks for the plug info. I will check tonight to see what was in there.
  18. How do I fix that with spfi? And which plugs would be right? I'll check what I put in tomorrow.
  19. I kinda thought that if coolant was in that cylinder that the burning coolant could cause a white residue. However, this is a first for anything this heavy so I really don't have experience with it. I would assume it was an internal gasket leak. I was building pressure immediately in the radiator and there was a small trace of coolant in the oil and oil in the coolant. I don't know, it just seems a little weird. The original plugs were black and the new ones are white. The only thing I did between changing the plugs was replace the intake manifold gaskets and drive about 50 miles.
  20. Ok, so I finally got started on gracefully ripping my engine apart to do my head gaskets. I pulled off the passenger side head off and found that my spark plugs (less than 1 hr of run time) and valves were bone white. The piston heads have typical carbon build-up and I really don't see anything non-typical (cracks between valves). What does this mean? I will be able to post pics tomorrow.
  21. If this can reasonably be done, I think it would be a great alternative. Keep us up to date.
  22. Sorry but I've gotta do this......FelPro and Cortex are not Subaru OEM Now that's out of the way, what are you torquing to and how are you doing it?
  23. Also, PK Davis is no longer making lifts (for a while now). I would suggest SJR (scott in bellingham) for lifts.
  24. I had this happen when I installed my cd deck. There are 2 power wires that need to be flip-flopped. I can't remember which ones, I think it was a red one and a yellow one.
