Why 3,000 miles
Well, there must be something to changing oil every 3,000 miles. When I bought my Honda new, the dealer gave me a certificate from Pennzoil that guaranteed my engine for LIFE as long as I could prove with receipts that the oil was changed and replaced with Pennzoil every 3,000 miles... that's a pretty gutsy guarantee. My Hyundais and Baja owner's manuals both recommend 7,500 miles... that's way too long in my book. Just my opinion... that and a buck and a half will get you a quart of oil

Cheap paint - 2005 Baja?
Seahag1978 replied to mtnpat's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSand on the roads isn't the bad part here, it's the chunks of asphalt from the potholes that are big enough to swallow a Buick!

Lets compare the Legacy and the Mustang
Seahag1978 replied to Slegacy96's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThat's my philosphy... I drive a Subaru... but I love to look at the Mustangs... so being on the outside of one is really kind of better... you can't see how cool they look going down the road or hear them as well... if you're driving it!

Cheap paint - 2005 Baja?
Seahag1978 replied to mtnpat's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI spent all day Sunday washing and waxing my 05 Baja. I was actually happy with the paint job on this car, the clear coat is clear and bright, paint laid smooth and even. My car was used (5,000 mi.) when I bought it. I know the area where the car was driven, the main highway is terrible, I got a cracked windshield traveling that road a few months back. I noticed 3 stone chips in the front cladding paint and 2 in the paint on the hood. I blame it on the Massachusetts roads... they're AWFUL! I also have one stone chip in the windshield (which the dealer will fix.) I think the rock chip problem has gotten worse than in years past is the higher speed cars are travelling. Now compare it to my 04 Hyundai. That was the cheapest paint job in the industry. The car was black and there was orange peel in all the recessed areas, the clear coat was hazy. No matter what you did to that car it looked like a 10 year old paint job. Junk. I think the plastic cladding on the Baja would have benefitted by another coat of paint, or a clear coat, but other than that, the quality of the paint on the metal parts is fine. I'll need the Monterey Silver and Brilliant Silver touch up. You are on the right track for the bra... how well do those magnetic ones work? They also have the clear for a bazillion dollars.

Finally found an Impreza for a reasonable price.
Seahag1978 replied to edrach's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGlad you got what you were looking for! Same happened here... screaming blue Mustang... went back to grab a salesman to test drive it... he pointed to a couple at another desk and said, "Sorry, they're signing papers on it." Best of luck with it!

So does it look better now...?
Vicky has my vote... the gold is quite "dainty" and doesn't anchor the car... seems to "float". Otherwise it looks great!

Daytime running lights
Seahag1978 replied to jeansain's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt's a silly design. I knew about the switch, but must have hit it by accident. The parking lights were on all day while at work... luckily the battery didn't run down. Now, as habit, I glance back to be sure they're off.

Subaru performance part
Seahag1978 replied to Greg's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI was curious about it so I went to: http://www.xcceleration.com/terms.htm Nope, you read it right, it is 3 days. Also, they make NO warranties on anything they sell whatsoever not even that it will perform for its "intended use". Seems like a very hard-rump roast company to deal with, but I can see why... they're selling parts that are intended for use by professional drivers for competition vehicles and if someone sticks the stuff in their street car and gets themselves killed they don't want to be held responsible. I think the terms are there to scare away the kids that want to be big and bad. A wise business decision I think

How much rust before a Subaru is unsafe?
My first Brat's body was perfect... not a touch of rust on it. I brought it to a dealership to overhaul the whole car (big $) well, he refused the job due to the rusted frame... he deemed it unsafe and not to spend any money on it. I wish I had known then that frequent undercarriage washes are about the best investment a rust-belter can make.

Subaru performance part
Seahag1978 replied to Greg's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCould be a misinterpretation... they may actually mean that it needs to be called in within 3 days if it arrived damaged in shipping. Most parts carry a minimum 30 day warranty... even used junk yard parts do. I would call them about that... seems wrong.

Alarm Issue with 2005 Forester
Seahag1978 replied to Jan Martinez's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDon't have that problem, the lights flash ok. My problem is when you even breathe on the front end of my Baja it beeps the horn 5 times. Just the ticking of the engine cooling does it too. Any type of "sharp" noise makes it beep... like its saying, "get back"!

How long til Suby survey arrived?
Seahag1978 replied to pqspin's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI bought a used '05 BajaT from a Subaru dealership a few weeks ago... I tried signing up at mysubaru.com and they want a fax of my registration to prove that I am the owner?! It makes me laugh because way back when I got a used Brat from a non-Subaru source and they somehow found me and mailed me a recall notice... long before computers were commonplace. Go figure!

Blow Off-Pop off valve for Baja Turbo.
Seahag1978 replied to Greg's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI see the name GReddy a lot when reading about Bajas... I drive one, but I don't know anything about turbos, intakes, BOVs, I just know it goes fast enough right out of the box... heck, I'm still trying to understand how "the wheels on the Brat go 'round and 'round." I peeked under the hood of the Baja and closed it real fast!

'97 outback failed emmissions?
Seahag1978 replied to tracedog67's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThis may or may not help you... but I believe I read somewhere that Subaru's warranty covers certain emissions components for up to 8 years... (it's a Federal thing) check on it... could save you some bucks... and headaches.

Aesthetic Opinions Please....
The first one... the last one draws your eye from back to the front... like the truck is built backasswards? I do like the color

cold weather mechanics club....
Hats, jackets and gloves help... but I find the "anger factor" helps the most... these cars can get your blood boiling!

what happens if you tow an AWD improperly?
My owner's manual also tells me that for emissions testing, they can't put it on a 2 wheel dynamometer because it can cause serious transmission damage. My state uses them and Subarus are exempt from that portion of the test and perform only the basic two-speed idle tailpipe test. 4-wheel dynamometers are ok and won't do any damage.

4WD problem
I have seen a 4WD totally bind and lock up. Mismatched tires caused the problem. By backing up he relieved the bind. Also remember, don't engage 4WD while cornering or over 50 mph.

Doing own oil changes - warranty issues?
Seahag1978 replied to mtnpat's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI get Luray and Skyline mixed up... I have been to Skyline too... that's the one with the eagle and the organ?...there are some pretty awesome formations there... we go down to Lovettsville twice a year. It is a beautiful area.

Doing own oil changes - warranty issues?
Seahag1978 replied to mtnpat's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFrom what I understand, you can go to Subaru.com and there's a page called My Subaru. There you can open an account (using your VIN) to record all your own information regarding any repair work done on consumables not under warranty... oil changes, coolant, brakes, wiper blades, etc. SOA tracks all dealer/warranty repairs and they will also appear in your account. I addition to this, I would also save receipts as proof of work and dates it was done. Good luck with your new car! They're great Oh... I just noticed where you are from... we went to Luray Caverns last summer... that place was AWESOME!

pissed off at dealers
I feel for you... sounds like the one I got... at first glance it was great... look and listen a bit closer and yikes! Don't worry, it can be fixed with enough blood, sweat, tears and a whole lot of parts from the members here, they're great and can locate just about anything you'll need. Good luck!

Body work on '92 Subaru for Inspection
I used Triumph for my Brat, the same price, $200.00 and they seemed to be the only ones willing to do it. Giant Glass said, "No way, too old." The kid at Safe-lite didn't know what a Brat was?!

Paint Problems
What you see is oxidization of the paint. Get some mild rubbing compound and begin polishing lightly BY HAND. Do a small area and keep checking the progress by wiping it down with a dry rag. Once you get down to good paint !STOP! you can get down to primer real fast. Rinse it thoroughly to get rid of the grit and then apply a good wax with UV protection in it. Be sure to keep a good coat of wax on it in the future and it should solve the problem. Good luck!
