Automatic Transmission won't shift from 1st or "slips" in 2nd
closer wont do you any good have 6 subarus in a line waiting takes months to get in my shop have a crazy wait list. A good idea is to take detailed pics of how it comes apart so you can refer to them when puting it back together. Eg pics of witch way toringtons go were tubes and drums go ect. If band addjustment helps the band is very close to being worn out probly just temp fix have seen them run and work with no coating but drum takes a beating

have done the 5 speed swap is a pain and hard to get check engine light out I think the 4eat is 90 % stronger than 5 speed i do 5 standards for every auto. And a'm considering the 4.44 4eat as the new offroad trans to replace the 5 speed high low as is way stronger and reverse is bulet prof. I absoluty torture the 4eat in my race buggy and it holds up when i ran a deul range 5 speed i blew 1rst 2nd and low in one race mind you was runing a 2.7 turbo six with nos

Radiator in the rear, booster pump?
The buggy runs rear rad is a pain to burp air out but works well i also added a 6L heat exchanger inline to add volume to coolant sestem it holds 12 L i use a sprint rad as is very light. Is mounted higher than engine I had to put a radcap filler off the upper heater hose to fill engine and front half of sestem. Have been useing this setup for 10 years and 20 different engines ea ej dident mater as long as all the air was out. Even drag raceing in 35 degre heat can run all day and never overheat

I rebiuld alot of 4 eats takes me about 1 hour to teardown and go thru one they are very good about just fixing whats broken and get out. You dont even have to pull the pan to change clutches just diff and tailshaft.

plan to pull trans and inspect its internals sounds like a broken band or planetary or high clutch drum 1rst and reverse use low reverse clutch drum the rest use high clutch and band and forward clutch. You could pull pan and see whats in it any meatal is bad.

Putt the ARP head studs in last night clearanced the heads to block had to use 1 2.5d headgasket and one layer of 2.51 headgasket to get right height so pistons dont hit heads. I only get a hour here and there to work on it but is coming along

yes short block is asembeled and the heads are ready cams are here look realy nice. Pistons in block come about 1/2 a mm above deck the headgaskets will be here today. The rear diff is a 88 rx posi with extra thick clutches on clutchpack from subaru has a outback 4.44 ratio uses a 80-84 gl center axle with 85-89 gl cv ends on it i do break them from time to time but mostly when i do donuts or realy sharp turns. Seems to hold the power well have broken a few diff stubs but are easy to change out and i carry a spare i call them the diff fuse save the diff blow the stub !

1996 Legacy outback chewing up transfer clutches
I test them on a uphill gravel grade from dead stop should drive away with no front wheel spin or very little. Is it posibble that fluid got contamanated that may make it break down clutch materal ?
