  1. pretty sure I already mentioned how to fix this: you now have a manual transmission with an auto trans ABS controller. if you want the ABS to work i'd consider getting the right controller...an emergency situation is not when you want to find out what the wrong controller does for your car.
  2. crap i forgot about that, i've heard folks mention before that something wouldn't work with it removed (like one of the door locks i think), but it might depend how it was installed/removed...like if a wire was just tapped or actually cut. not sure about the alarm. where was the remote starter installed? did it look difficult, maybe i'll buy it from you so mine will randomly start? i saw your call last night but i was about to head to sleep. i'm at my parents if you have their number.
  3. oh nice, well i know not to waste my time except to cut it out maybe, cut the bolt on either side of the ears so the arm drops out. of course then the problem still remains.
  4. control arm bolt won't come out of the bushing where it passes through the mount on the car. nut is off, sprayed with PB Blaster, and pounded with a hammer and the bolt won't budge. bet someone has seen this before? i posted the same question 3 years ago. i don't even remember what i was working on back then or if i ever got it out!?
  5. the plastic cam sprockets suck. i've known people to break, crack, and damage them and ask me for help. i'm sure it's not out of the question for someone to tweak them and try reusing them or not know they're bad after a timing belt/cam seal change. then again it could be something more ominous, but i think chances are higher for the other and if the engine turns over fine that's what i would lean towards.
  6. assuming generational differences are in check - yes, sedan and wagon doors aren't any different.
  7. that's another can of worms, depends on why it's doing it. could be just stuck, could be a sign of internal failures.
  8. sounds like someone removed the thermostat or it's stuck. get a Subaru thermostat, that could be the problem, someone previously replaced it with an aftermarket which look like tin toys next to the Subaru units. aftermarket tstats are known to cause issues sometimes. but even if it is Subaru it could be 15+ years old.
  9. it's when the 4WD is engaging but shouldn't be. have you ever driven in 4WD on pavement..and felt a braking, slowing down, feeling? that's torque bind due to the 4WD.
  10. need to find out for sure what's going on. jack both sides and see which tire has resistance. probably a brake hanging up - have the caliper slides ever been regreased, are the boots in good shape with no cracks? once i had a front ebrake hanging - i freed it up, moved it back and forth a few times and never had a problem again. could it also be torque bind - the 4WD?
  11. i wanted to install a new coolant temp sensor connector anyway since that's a common issue on the XT6 and i already have the connectors, so i'll do that and clean the sensor or maybe even replace it.
  12. sweet, i hope it is. anyone have experience with an O2 sensor making that much difference? i've never had that happen. seems fine.
  13. 88 XT6 manual AWD is only getting about 15mpg. i should get 20-25 with the kind of driving i'm doing and close to 30 highway. Is there a good way to track this down? not looking for a laundry list of possible things, i realize it could be dozens. I'm thinking there's probably only one or two things that can make it this bad. Runs perfect, no check engine lights, PCV, plug wires, cap, rotor, plugs all replaced. Brakes all redone and crisp, bearings tight. I have a new O2 sensor but haven't installed it yet - an O2 sensor wouldn't drop it that much, would it? I've run without O2 sensors and it didn't seem that bad, but its been awhile. Fuel pressure regulator? i'll have to look up how to test those, or if it's easy i'll just swap one in?
  14. this really isn't a big deal, doesn't need to be an argument or ideological struggle. conformity is not the goal of the board. we'll all learn something from it. if i were him i would make an honest few thousands dollars in one day out of this whole deal, but i don't expect him to do what i would do. there's not much need for another EJ25 debate but they have other issues as well, like piston slap and rod bearings...seen a few rods through the block.
  15. the power steering pump is there and the a/c brackets are there, so might not be hard to get all or some of that back. yeah, that's legacy scoop, looks good to me if it was one color. paint that thing.
  16. Yep, common. What is odd is that it's relegated mostly to 99 year only. Even more odd is that this and the delayed transmission problems are basically 99 only issues..with a few 00 bleed overs.
  17. i've installed them before on XT6's roy, doesn't take anything but reaching back there, inserting them (usually VERY tight, but they fit), then pulling them through with a lug nut. if you don't have room it probably is just as easy to install another used hub considering you don't have rust out there destroying them all! i'd probably do that over taking it somewhere or disassembling the actual hubs/bearings if it came to that.
  18. i've shipped power steering fluid overseas, didn't think to check about that. someone sent me Wine from an international destination, is that legal? is tranx X flammable? i assume it is, but did anyone read the label? technically speaking the USPS can't ship anything based on the questions they always ask me "Is there anything liquid, fragile, perishable, or potentially dangerous." The answer is always yes - most car parts are potentially dangerous...if you try and eat them...drop them on your head...throw them at someone!?!? seems like it shouldn't be that hard to get it or it's equivalent/counterpart elsewhere.
  19. in general auto trans issues are bad news, but make sure it's not something simple. do all the tires match - in size and tread wear and correct pressure? check the trans fluid - is it full, is it old, does it smell burnt? i'd be changing the fluid immediately, sounds like you might be having a trans issue. does the AT light flash 16 times on start up or is the check engine light on? the TPS is intergrated with the transmission, so that's one sensor you could look into.
  20. i would just fit a used rack, are any subaru's available over there? even newer impreza/legacy should work just fine. install your EA82 tie rod ends onto the legacy racks. i bet they bolt right in place and they rarely fail.
  21. i've mentioned this before as well. glad you started a thread, might be a good reference for others or to link to later. I would keep in mind that myself, GD, and Davebugs have no idea how many Subaru engines we've pulled, replaced, and swapped, easily 3 digits worth between all of us combined. We are suggesting this for very specific reasons, not just bantering. there's a high percentage of repeat failures (i haven't had one yet but i quit replacing them years ago), and the failures i'm aware of are from very highly skilled people who have done custom subaru motors swaps, used subaru parts, etc. not just your average guy tackling his first clutch job. this also coming from guys - that always replace all seals we can get to - like crank, cams, oil pump, whenever we do a timing belt job. but the rear main is kind of a different beast, i've always wondered why?
  22. there's no reason for it to run poorly and you certainly won't have any problems passing emissions with bad head gaskets, so that's not anything you even need to think about. that's awesome instant leave-you-stranded overheating quit. wonder if the cap alone would help with that? you did the sealant stuff first right?
  23. i would inspect this right away. ujoints, center bearing, or rear diff bushing are my guess. the first two can cause massive damamge (folks have posted pictures before) if a ujoint fails. some grabbing and pushing around on the driveshaft might show the culprit. sometimes a bad driveshaft ujoint isn't detectable unless you actually remove the driveshaft though. bad joints are very obvious then - either seized or lumpy.
  24. Will, I can hook you up I believe, but someone else might beat me to it. I'll send you a PM.
