Bay Area Meet... Early May?
ShawnW replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I heard theres a 1500 car meet out there somewhere from a friend and WRX owner....just a tip. -
Kudos to you all! This is One of my favorite mods and accs from the 80's, right up there with Brat T-Tops and jumpseats. I await the day I get my vanagon running so I can invest some time into putting the 81 Vanagon cyclops retrofit into it (the 84 has A/C and alot more hurdles to jump over than the 81 did).

A simple problem

That'd probably be the timing set incorrectly. Oh and welcome back and enjoy your charter icon. -

Camping and wheeling! Possible running and operational vanaroo to show off soon but it aint wheeling! Shawn -
Re-use the bolts, never re-use the gaskets. LH drill bit should get the bolt out of its place. You may need to take a small chisel to the bolt in a reverse fashion to kindof persuade it in the right direction--I hope you know what i mean. I have done 5-10 of these repairs without much problem. Worst case scenerio isn't that bad...insert the head with a Timesert.

Yep 2.2. Theres a few 2.5's out there.

EJ22 Head Gasket Replacement Question
ShawnW replied to 88westy's topic in Vanagon Conversion Discussion
Yep, use spray. -
Timing belt is VERY doable in the van on mine, in fact I had mine apart and it was easier in a Vanagon than in a Subaru. Extrodinarily easy if you do it with the cat and muffler off.

Id like to live in the same state as you again. Westward ho the wagons to where they don't use salt! A few days ago I found 2 wagons in the junkyard, one had 361K and the other 389K and both looked like they would have driven into the yard.

'84 turbo coupe with a weird tranny issue
ShawnW replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Fluid swapping is my guess as these are known for that. If so check the reduction gear for damage. -
Pull plug wires one at a time and see which one has the least affect on how it runs if any of them. If one (or 2) dont have a lot of change do a compression test.

Another new conversion project...
ShawnW replied to 88westy's topic in Vanagon Conversion Discussion
Post a pic of tell me the markings on your block heater and I can see if I have one lying around that is smaller. -
If you are afraid of the wiring check out the vendor forum, i offer this service. Has anybody tried using the ej22 power steering lines?

Completely interchangable and no spring compressor needed.

Remember cooling systems work because they are under pressure. A leak of any kind (head gasket) will cause a loss of pressure and cooling capacity. Its a head gasket and if you continue to drive it you will warp the block so consider parking it until you can afford to fix it properly. I assume you have around 120K miles on the car which would also point to HG. These radiators are really good on these cars, last longer than the head gaskets by ALOT.

You need to inspect the timing belt components. Specifically on California and 2000 and later cars the Drivers side cam gear (L) and the crank gear are different and they talk to the cam and crank angle sensors differently. There are more teeth on the crank gear and different teeth on the cam gear. The passenger side ® gear doesnt really matter. You can swap the crank angle sensor and gear from your car along with the cam angle sensor and gear from your car to make it work. You should also leave the ECM from your car in, it should work as well.
