Need helping replacing lower ball joint!!!
Subieguy replied to jk4138's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mine were so rusted in place in my 88 XT that I had to use a air chisel to get them out. Took some real coaxing but they both came out and man! What a difference it made in the driving of the car. That and both front CV axles. Have fun with that. -
75 wagon still in the yard
Subieguy replied to gen1lover's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Somebody has to go get this one! Think about it, how often do you find a 75 subie sitting around. Even if it is rotted out it has got to be worth the money to strip it and keep the parts for hopefully another subie down the road. The parts alone have got to be worth the money. Heck if I were closer I would go get it just for that. I would try and talk the guy down on the price though. Cash talks! -
Looks like brand new inside! Great looking car!

Heck this has given me the itch for a gen 1 wagon now! Anybody have one on the west coast. I am thinking California would be nice. I can pretty much drive to pick it up in the state. Any condition would work for me. Help me out guys! -

Wow! That sure does suck! I was looking forward to owning a gen 1 wagon too. Would have been nice to park next to my 78 Brat. Oh well, I guess I will just have to keep looking. -

Well I talked to the guy. He said it only runs for a few seconds and dies. Said it is a 4wd 4spd car. It only has body damge to the door, obviously and the hood. He still thinks it is a 73 though. Probably cost me like $200 in gas just to go get it with my truck. Still, that is not all that bad. I would have the only 78 Subie wagon around. That is for sure. What do you guys think? My only real problem would be finding a door for it. There are no old subies like that in my local junkyards. -

I sent the guy a e-mail with a few questions. Hopefully if I could pull it off it would be like a 3 1/2 hour drive to go get it. I drove that far for my 78 brat. -

No, I did not touch the front brakes. Never even thought of doing it at the time. -

I did the 4 wheel disc conversion on my 78 Brat. Took a few modifications. Mainly doing some grinding to get everything to bolt on. But the bolt holes all lined up so no redrilling of any holes. Got my brakes from a 87 GL-10 wagon. They work great too. -
What a difference after the change! So much better! Well worth the time to change it over. Still did it in a few hours in the driveway. Piece of cake!

Did it on my 89 GL-10. Took regular struts from a 85 GL wagon. They must be 4wd struts. Big difference in how it handles too.

77 From Hamilton City
Subieguy replied to RenaissanceMan's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
What price did you pick it up for? Nice score too Mike. You can't mess that one up. It would almost be a crime to cut up a old subie like that. -
A answer to your fan question: On my 78 Brat which is the same engine compartment as yours I put 2 EA 82 fans in there. One from a 88 Xt and one from a 87 GL10 wagon. Both the same fan though.I wired one up to run off the accesory and I put the second one off a constant hot and put that to a toggle switch in the dash just in case it starts to get hot when I am going off road. It might be a little overkill but I had the extra fans laying around and it turned out great. The only thing I had to do on one of the fans was cout a notch to clear the water pump. But man! Do those fans pull some air!

'FREE' gen 1 brat stuff
Subieguy replied to uncoolperson's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Hey Mike if you nees a radiator that bad the other junk yard up here in Paso has a 78 Brat. It is A1 auto wrecking. I have got a lot off this Brat myself. It still has the radiator too. Scored my Jackman wheels and uncracked steering wheel off it. Give it a look. They are fairly decent on their prices too.
