My 'new' 79 wagon (thanks RavenTBK!)
Subieguy replied to DerFahrer's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Man that makes me want to go get my gen 1 wagon now! But I will just have to wait till next Saturday. Nice Score by the way! -
Just buy the dash piece new. I had to for my 88 XT. It is still available from Subaru. Have fun getting it out without breaking it. It has 3 metal clips. Two on top and one to the bottom left side right below where the door chime is at. I made my own bracket out of the orginal radio mounting bracket. A little welding and you can make anything!

Going to need a door for a 78 wagon
Subieguy posted a topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Anybody know where I can find a drivers side rear passenger door for a 78 wagon. Going to be my first Gen 1 wagon:D . Now the fun begins to find the parts I need for it. Looks like the door and a hood will be where I start my 78 wagon project. Hey at least it is a 4wd car! -
88 turbo just would not start,
Subieguy replied to 86subaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That happened once when my XT had dirty battery connectors. Or it could be from possible loose battery cables. Long shot but you might want to check it anyway. -

Put me in for one. The one in my Brat is long since shot! Probably should get 2 but money is getting a little tight right now. -
Man I just went to the Subaru site and man! That new 07 Spec.B looks Great! Especially now that they did away with that Brick red leather interior:clap: . Six speed tranny looks good too. I think I am going to have to hold out till this fall and pick one up. I was going to buy a 06 Legacy GT in a few months but it looks like the wait might be worth it. Anybody else had a look at the pictures yet?

Subaru part #665002820. It will fit Brat, Wagons and sedans 77-81. Hope that helps. -
Alright the engine in my 85 GL-10 appears to be worn out. I just got the car for free on Saturday and it appears the former owner just drove the car into the ground. It is leaking oil everywhere. It just does not feel solid to me. So I have a 87 DL wagon that is a parts car. The engine and tranny are strong in it. It is a 2wd wagon and the 85 is also a 2wd. Question is can I use the FI motor out of the 87 to use in the 85. It is also fuel injected. I am going to do this if it will work. I can't see why it would not. As long as I am not trying to put a EA82T in its place, right? Any help would be appreciated.

Scored a FREE 85 GL-10 sedan today
Subieguy replied to Subieguy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think I have come to the conclussion that the engine in this Subie is tired. It is leaking oil everywhere. Looks like it has lost the rear main seal. The clutch feels almost gone. So I think it looks like rebuild time. It is just to nice of a car to just throw away. -

Any other suggestions besides the vacum leaks? Anybody? -

Could the EGR valve be bad? I unhooked it on one end and no difference. I can't seem to find any vacum leaks. -

That is what I figured. Just thought I would check first with the board and get some advice. -
Ok I found this Gl-10 sedan today. The guy told me he took it to his mechanic and the guy said, "broken timing belt so you got bent valves now". We all know that is not the case. The guy replaced the timing belts but it still would not run so, he gave up. I brought it home and checked to see how the belts were lined up with the marks. Not even close. So after about 20 minutes I had everything where it was supposed to be and one turn of the key and the 85 was alive again. Now I just have one question. It idles way too high. Like at about 2500 rpm's. After a few minutes it will finally come down but so low that it does not want to idle. Less then 500 rpm's. Any suggestions as to what I should do? Besides that little problem and a broken LH tail light I think I have gotten a pretty good score. Not even a rip in any of the seats!

1978 Subaru Brat - Need Parts / Donor Vehicles
Subieguy replied to subi1978's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I have a lot of the parts you are looking for. They all came from the 4 78-79 Brats I have parted out. Let me know. Thanks. -
Wow! That is some bad rust Trudy. Hope you can save it. Man sure glad we don't have rust issues like that in California.

Brat tailgate... its supposed to open right?
Subieguy replied to rsb's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Ok this is a common problem on Gen 1 Brats. All 5 I have had all had the same problem. If it won't open the cables that open the latches on the tailgate are stretched out. Take off the access cover. List up on the tailgate latch and watch how the innards work. This will show you what to do to open it. Once you see the direction they are moving reach both your hands inside the tailgate and pull in the directions that the latch is pulling the 2 cables. Keep pulling until the tailgate comes open. In order to stop this you need to compensate for the stretched cables. you will need to remove both of them and cut a little notch out of them. That will give you more room to adjust them. That is where the screw hold it to the latch. Use a small cut off wheel or a dremel to cut out little parts. After that reinstall them and make your adjustments. It will work like brand new! -
Need to stop the oil leaks in my 78 Brat
Subieguy replied to Subieguy's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I definetly have a gear oil leak that runs right onto the exhaust. What is the name of the seals that go on the transmission? And, where could I find them. -
Ok I need to freshen up the motor in my 78 Brat. It had been sitting for 10 years when I got it. Since I have been driving it more and more oil is leaking from it. I know I need to replace gaskets and seals. Just need to know which ones need to be replaced. I am more familar with ea 82 engines. I know the ea 71 is not the most complex engine but I am not sure all what to replace. Obviously I need to do the valve cover gaskets but what else? I only have oil leaks. No anti freeze. Tranny leaks too. Thanks.

Why NOT to use a forklift to lift a car!

Man! What a shame! No way is it worth that kind of money. Maybe $50 no more for it. What a jackass:banghead:
