90 loyale power steering
MorganM replied to brus brother's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Look down on the passangers side of the engine bay. YOull see your power steering lines come down from the engine, nexto the rocker covers, and to some fittings on top of the main crossmember. Could be leaking at those fittings. Also get way up under your car back behind the oil pan. The steering rack sits above the main corssmember. Look for signs of powersteering fluid thats been seeping from above. The rack itself could be leaking at either end. The tanks can aslo sweat some fluid right on the pump there. Cant really notice it a lot of times as it leaks from behind or below. Just leaving a slight film or sludge below on top of the block. Honestly a slow PS leak is not a big deal. Ive had them leak for years on several cars. Just keep it topped off and you are good to go. I wouldnt worry about it too much unless you notice it getting drasticly worse OR if its affecting your steering/control at all. -
AC problem...fix it or ditch it?
MorganM replied to nutt7's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Fix it or ditch it? Is that even debatable? Throw that junk in the garbage -
Dunno what I coudl add other than I think is a great idea and to go with it! There are lots of other subaru sites/forums on the net. Be sure to drop them the info too and get a more broad spectrum of input.

MorganM replied to WagonBoy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

trans problems while slowing to stop
MorganM replied to 89Ru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you cant FEEL the tranny slowing you down (trans-braking) then its either time to clutch in, go to neutral and brake or clutch in and shift down again. Letting it sit in gear to long as you slow down is gonna start some 'bucking'. As all your rubber mounts get old they get more spongey and flexible. Wont hold up to much of any 'bucking' or 'burping' Tend to just slop forward and backward and misbehaive. -
If it makes you feel any better my brakes are the same way About half way down the brakes start enguaging (real pressure at the pedal) and even then its still rather "soft" However the pedal does get very stiff twoards the bottom and it holds pressure. I still feel like there is an air bubble I just CANT get rid of! Maybe its in the hill holder? That's like the ONE thing I didnt bleed the piss out of When you press down on the pedal HARD does the pedal get STIFF? Can you lock up the tires if you hit them hard enough? What matters the most is you can STOP when its MOST necessary therefore keeping yourself and others safe As long as you HOLD pressure you are fine. If you hold the pedal and it slowly looses pressure you have a leak and a seriouse problem. Sounds like you have done lots of bleeding. Rear adjusters are key; I bet fixing those would help A LOT. Have a strong suspision that rear adjustors might be my problem. I think I'll just do a rear disc swap instead of dorking around with rear drums much. Good luck and dont scrap her jsut yet!

EA82 Engine swap... what to replace it with?
MorganM replied to WagonBoy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Archemitis used the EA82 MPFI, no turbo. The XT came both NA and Turbo. It will not be a DIRECT bolt in and drive. Modification will be required for ANY motor swap you choose. Unless you are putting in another EA82 SPFI to just basicly replace the one you got. That would be a pretty direct bolt in replacment. Lots of work but very minimal modification would be needed. Honestly this would get you back on the road sooner. I guess are you looking for a fun project or just trying to get back on the road? Time and Money (READ: parents) will dictate really what you should do -
reverse light wiring, 5spd conversion, vice versa
MorganM replied to MilesFox's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
A few of the plugs do line up. I pluged what ones I could in. The rest I left unplugged. I have no reverse lights so I can't help you there. Would be nice to wire those up Have you been keeping up on McBrat's thread? He's trying to track down similar issues. -
I think I Can! I think I Can!!
MorganM replied to subynut's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Pulling a wagon with a wagon is nothing. Poor Archemitis has had to tow me around a few times Also watched him pull an Isuzu Impulse around. Said the clutch never slipped and really had no problems. The lawyers made them put those warnings in the manual That trailiner in your photo Miles looks like some serouse towing! LOL Thats a pretty beefy trailer alone. Not to mention the hefty load ON the trailer. -
Blowing cv axles left and right
MorganM replied to one eye's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just look at the ratio for the rear end in the '80 wagon and compare to the ratio in the '82 brat. If they are the same ratio then the tranny is fine and that's not your problem but if they are different then you gotta swap the rear diffs out as well. Prolly should have done this at tranny swap time Good luck! -
EA82 Engine swap... what to replace it with?
MorganM replied to WagonBoy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm quite impressed with Archemitis MPFI swap from an XT into his EA81 hatch. Definatly has more spunk than my SPFI. Shouldnt be too rough fo a swap if your old engine was fuel injected. Just an option -

Y pipe Oxygen sensor location question?
MorganM replied to lagwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The wire for the sensor wont be long enough. Have to make it longer. I would suggest running a whole new line from the plug in connecter under the engine bay to the sensor itself. Leaving the connector to ECU wire in tact and unmodified. The sensor sends data to the ECU on a very narow margin (0-1volt). Splcing and using connectors could effect that signal. If you are good at soldering then you might get away with extending it that way sind a solderd connection shouldnt loose signal. Personaly I'd just run a new wire from plug to sensor and solder the connection at each end there. Then you would just have 2 solderd points, one at the plug and one at the sensor itself. -
exhaust manifold- use 4 studs instead of 2
MorganM replied to lagwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Only times I've had problems getting headers to seal against heads was due to the exhuast not allowing sufficent clearance. The cat would hit something and not allow the exhuast system to come up close enough to the body so the headers could mate flush with the heads. Or the mid pipe to the muffler had too much angle and the muffler hit the body; again with teh same result. Another time the header on one side wasnt welded on perfectly and was at a slight angle not allowing the header to come up flat against the head. In these senarios 4 exhuast studs wouldnt have helped. Make sure you allow the exhuast to come up close enough to the car when you make it. So your headers will come up flat against the heads. Avoid my mistakes and I think you will be fine with 2 studs -
Pics of my gen1 brats(more pics & tech )
MorganM replied to lumpycam's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That lifted Brat is tricked out, WTG How was the 10" lift achieved if you could share some more details? Did you just adapt the bellhousings on the 2.8 V6 / 5spd DR ? How about fuel delivery, FI or carb? How about flywheel/clutch assembly? Just redrilled the flywheel for the V6? Thx -

WOW I'd say you are lucky to have that Subaru still! That had to be so scary; trying to push it back! I dont think mine is water proof enough to remaind boyant and float at all; id just sink to the bottom LOL Glad to hear its running again. Migh t give her a good day or 2 in the sun with the hood up to dry EVERYTHING out Could help with that idle! -
ER27 in an EA82 car, can it be done?
MorganM replied to All_talk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
XT6. It came with a 2.7 Litre 6 cyl boxer engine. Subarubrat has one in his Brat so I'd say it fits in an EA82 also! -
What could I get for Selling My Soob?
MorganM replied to Skipper47's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If I was in the market I would pay $500 to $600 for it. Sounds kinda low but it is a Loyale (less options than GL) has an automatic transmission (nutorious for going out on you) and only single range 4WD, and almost 100,000 miles. I know the EA82 SPFI will go longer than 100k but any way you cut it; thats quite a few miles. Would not expect the 3AT to go much over 100k Just my 2 cents; im sure people would pay a lot more for it. -
I've had a tricky starter. The selinod worked fine (that clicking you hear when you try to start) but it would only kick over the starter if I was VERY persistant or hit it with a lot of juice (jump starting it) Swaped on a junkyard starter and havent looked back. Might want to try a junkyard one, just to see if its the starter, and replace it as needed. Thats my guess

I'm VERY happy with Speed Bleeders. They are replacment bleeder screws for your wheel hubs. Simply unscrew your old ones out and put in the new Speed Bleeders. Then you can bleed your brakes by yourself. Crack the new bleeder free 1/8th turn and pump the pedal! There is a one-way spring loaded check valve in each one. Makes life simple for the DIY'er It was tough finding bleeders for my old drums in the rear. Prolly not an issue with newer subarus. I also made some custom ones for the rear so if you cant find a perfect replacment let me know and I'll post how to make some customized ones up!

After decades of being pentup in slow old subarus... LOOK OUT, here comes Tim! You've unleashed a monster! New cars are great; I'm glad you bot hare happy. I'm with Vickaroo, Tim will get the first ticket!

Overheating Question! Ugh Grrrrr
MorganM replied to Goatboy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Definatly worth a shot if you are on a strict budget. I've scored a couple good ones from junkyards now. Might even find someone who replaced theirs with a two row or find a turbo model with one! Good luck
