When you are cool enough you can say stuff like that too Anyway, back on topic... How wide are those 31"s ? What rims w ould you be putting them on? With 15" pug rims you can go as wide as 9.5". More offset rims you can go wider. Height isnt really a big deal; you could cut and beat clearance to make 31"s fit with just a BYB lift.

t-belt cover what if..... continues

I was just thinking about cam timing adjustment pins today Delta Cams can even custom make some up; didnt ask how much extra that would have been. I know someone has already done them 3 degrees advance at the cam. Said the low end was real mean but she ran hotter also. Wish I remember who did it... Maybe a search will reveal this. -
Not to rain on the turbo parade but my first mod on that nice wagon would be a real 4WD transmission Swapin an 5spd Dual Range 4WD tranny. Someone on the boards just did it recently and others have in the past so info can be had to make it easier. Would feel kinda silly finishing up a turbo upgrade only to blow up that 3AT from the extra power. They didnt even withstand stock horsepower as well as the manual trannys did. Good luck

How to Use a Multimeter
MorganM replied to Bill90Loyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Do you check EGR at full operating temp? Or when the engine is still cool? Thx -
The 5speed dual range I installed seems to be hard to get into 3rd also. I'm chalking it up as a bad synchronizer for 3rd but I honestly dont know. What I find helpfull is to be sure the engine/tranny are READY for 3rd. Cant shift too early or its gonna be trouble. If I hang out too long in 4th while slowing down I sometimes have to skip 3rd, brake, then go into 2nd instead Rev matching definatly and sometimes double clutching helps get into 3rd. Heard lots of rave around Redline products. Might help but certainly wont fix whats broken. Good luck!

What ever happend to tossing them in the garbage? Plenty of ppl have ran with out them. I only have the back ones on right now and the one middle front one. Belts and cams are fully exposed on both sides in the front. Do lots of offroading and playing around. Timing belts are clean as can be; everything tends to just fling off them Next time I have that junk apart I'm just gonna rip them all off. THey are ruined anyway and just a head ache to reinstall. -
I know it's not a race car but come on!!
MorganM replied to aphat426's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Definatly sounds like you have an issue with lack of power. Youre right they arent fast cars by any means but you honestly should be able to drop the clutch and spin the tires; gravel or pavement. You should also have little trouple achieving 70 MPH. Much beyond that you better hang out in 4th gear till 80 before going for 5ith! lol Anyway it could be a number of things. Sounds like you are already hot on its trail. New ignition componets was a good shot; dont stop there! How about timing? Get a timing light on there and find out. Should be 8 degrees BTDC for carbed EA82 and 20 degrees BTDC for fuel injection EA82. Might try a new coil. They arent very expensive and despite the hype around how long they last they DO wear out and can deliver a weak spark QUADRUPLE check your fire order! You definatly can have some funny swaping plug wires and stil run, and run poorly. Fire order is 1 3 2 4, cylinders are labled right on the block, cap should be labled somehow with #1. Clogged cat certainly could give you a lack of power for no apperent reason. Some cars have plugged them so bad they are very hard to start and run like dogs but show now physical reason why when you start looking under the hood. The air passage holes and screen mesh in the cats are VERY narrow and easily plugged up. I belive someone here has used a magic potion (fuel addative?) that 'cleans' your cat and maybe they can comment further on that. I have just pulled and punched out a few cats; that works for me. That fuel pump could also be in question. Get up under there and make sure its all mounted well and not wiggeling around. Just a loose fuel pump can make it sound pretty bad. I can hear mine at idle over my loud exhuast so they arent exactly quiet pumps. As noted above filterS is a good idea. There are two, one under the bonnet and one in the back near the pump Keep hunting, youll find it! -
How to Use a Multimeter
MorganM replied to Bill90Loyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Electrical issues are the worst I use mine for 2 things really. I dont know much about how to properly use all the fancy buttons and such but I get by lol. The first setting I use a lot is just Volts testing. You set your meter to read within the range of volts you are testing. So in the case of a car, 12 Volt DC. Mine has a setting for upto 20 V DC. Now when I touch the red probe to a hot lead ont he car, and ground the black probe the meter will tell me how many volts (upto 20) is going to that wire. The other setting I use is OHMs for resistance testing. Again I set the meter to the range I'll be working in. Put the red probe at a wire or device terminal (for example one spade end terminal on a Throttle Position Sensor) and ground the black probe. This will tell you how high the resistance is for that wire/device. The higher the resistance, the harder it is for electricity to flow. Hope that helps somewhat I'm sure some electrical gurus will reply back with some more indepth descriptions on how to properly use a mutlimeter. Then hopefully I'll learn something also! Peace. -
delta cams on a n/a EA82
MorganM replied to subaru_styles's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just got off the phone with Delta Cams. Dude said they can do high end or low end performance cams for EA82 NA. I spose it depends on what you want. Personaly I want low end for offroading. He told me UP TO 10% gains from the low end performance cam. I would assume this was after tuning for the new cams. Callem up! http://www.deltacam.com/index.htm 1 (800) 562-5500 -
See that's kinda the exact oposite of what I would like. Could they grind a cam up that would give me more lowend at the sacrifice of high end performance? I guess I could just call them hehe Thx for your insight on the NA cams, WJM and Myxalplyx. --------- So I just called He said they mostly do cams for higher end performance, but they can do up some cams for the EA82 NA that will yield gains for lowend power. He was willing to say UPTO 10 % gains achieved. Sounds like what I'm looking for Also said about $135 for the set if I sent mine in to be redone. Peace

I would suggest looking at first generation Legacy wagons. You can get them with AWD and 4speed automatic transmission. They are very well built as far as engine/drivetrain. Quite a few buggy electrical issues; mostly to do with cabin options. I loved my Legacy wagon and it was quite reliable. What repairs I did have to make I found to be just as easy as my EA82 SPFI.
-
I guess it just sounded from WJM's description that they really didnt add any more power till higher RPMs; which I really dont use often. From your description it sounds like you are enjoying gains from most of the RPM band. That's what I'm talk'n bout! I need a little more pep in my step for these tires. I'll let Arch test them in his first and then I'll prolly get some

For sure. If you are sick of answering the same questions over and over; then stop answering them. Sick of reading them? Make a comprehensive FAQ or some a worthwhile contrubution to the Ultimate Subaru Repair Manual.... or just dont read them

That sounds rather silly. Why is there a 'drag' cam for a wussed out EA82 N/A ? I want more lowend not highend

Yes, um, right away and please send all money to Morgan M.....

Where does the Justy owner fit in on this site?
MorganM replied to Just a Justy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Bumped into a guy on base today in a lifted '91 GEO Tracker. It was pretty sick really. Up on 32X10.5 Super Swampers, about 6" suspension lift, stock engine and running gear. Looked like a blast! I'd rather have the Samurai I think tho -
They did some seriously funny stuff do the drivetrain in the Justy. Check these links out: Overall Subaru history: http://www.subaru-global.com/about/history/ More Justy specific: http://www.subaru-global.com/about/history/1984-001.html#subhead-001 http://www.preloved.co.uk/fuseaction-forums.showdiscussion/thread_id-2996/ddcb80c8.html Pics: http://www.subaru.co.jp/spirits/history/h4/img/h4_1984b.GIF http://www.deautogids.nl/site/wie/auto/ECVT.jpg http://www.worldwidetransmissions.com/wtg/images/ecvt.jpg http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=www.isuzu-suvs.com/subaru/justyecvt/thumbnails/ecvt(Justy)4.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.isuzu-suvs.com/subaru/justyecvt/&h=225&w=173&sz=13&tbnid=HsW3B7rg3NkJ:&tbnh=101&tbnw=78&start=7&prev=/images%3Fq%3DECVT%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8 http://www.automatic-berger.de/Explosionszeichnungen/Subaru/ECVT.gif I've seen a few Justy's come through the bone yards. A few MPFI 1.3L, a few TBI 1.3L, one RS with pushbutton 4WD, and one ECVT 4WD. Truely odd little creatures.

Definatly replace that belt. It's really not that expensive for one and you already have it off. The rest I say if it aint broke then don't fix it Might verify the pumps are indeed new. I know some shops say they 'do everything' and really just replace what was broken and charge for it all anyway. If everything looks new and not leaking I'd leave it be; 20,000 miles is not a lot of miles for pumps and seals.

Sounds like a pretty good deal for cams. Did the EA82 ever come with a comparable cam profile? Who all has delt with Delta befor? Happy with service and products? I wouldnt mind bolting on a little more unf

AC problem...fix it or ditch it?

Um ya? It gets over 100 degrees in more places than Phoenix, AZ.... AC makes people weak -

You sure could. Just apply enough time and money -
What is the bottleneck in the EA82 SPFI?
MorganM replied to oobnuker's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
They do make performance cams. I bet you would notice some power from a set of cams.
