http://www.dual-concepts.com/gallery/ Notice the very light ATV is sunk into the mud in several pictures...not floating on top if it. Dualies are for agricultrual implement or towing; not offroading.

Here's my anual submission to Suby Pic of the Year. Taken this year in April at the MN 4WD Association annual event. There was a black diamond hill climb to get to the top of this platue. The image is not photoshoped; the dirt really is this red! I'll submit the next one on Archemitis behalf. Just came out of one of the mud holes. Same time, same event, just later that day. The mud was an interesting orange color and consistancy of molten clay. Here's a close up of the rocks we roll on up north! Nice sharp, jagged, rocks that love gashing side walls! If only they were all as small as this one

Electronic Ignition woes

Get yourself a used one. -
Lower gears, using stock drive & 31" tires ?
MorganM replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Off Road
Sounds like you need a Toyota then... or atleast a Subaru with Toyota running gear to give you the clearence, tire sizes, gears, and aftermarket support you want. -
Auto trannies have a transmission control unit and do not have 'gears' per say. What Austin wants is a 'granny gear' for a 1st gear in his manual tranny.

MorganM replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Off Road
With a full 6" lift then 31" tires and t-case can fit. Maybe Bushbasher can chime in because I'm refering to him as a reference here. I think you already have an awsome offroad machine. Just need to go out and prove it to yourself -
It's quite typical for thise insta-lube joints to over fill yoru oil. Either drain a quart out yourself or take it back ASAP and tell them to fix their mistake.

Oxygen Sensor Quality and Price Question...
MorganM replied to mentis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Pay for what... all 15 minutes it will take to put the old one back in? Tell them you aren't retarded and know it wont take more than 15 min for a trained professional to swap those sensors again. -
Oxygen Sensor Quality and Price Question...
MorganM replied to mentis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Why are you still dealing with this shop? Tell them to A) Stop Remove their faulty part C) You'll be picking it up later and D) haggle with them on charges. Most I'd pay thus far is shop time/labor. Your car will drive just fine with your old faulty O2 sensor. In the mean time you can A) Live with it or find a different shop. A 'new' computer is going to be quite expensive. A used one will not be expensive. I'd get a second opinion before changing the computer. -
McBrat: Could you post the exact location of the meet again? *edit* Nevermind I found it */edit* I can't seem to find it in this huge thread. I *MIGHT* make it down for SAT. It would have to be a one day deal; head down that morning and head out that night. Still have to run it by my wife. Baby won't be born till 12AUG; sheduled c-sections make it easier to plan things! OOPS! I got a wedding to go too on SAT! :-p Well better luck next year right? Have fun!

Possible? Yes Hard? Yes Worth it? Doubtfull. Only way I'd see it as wrothwhile is if you could get the 2WD vehicle + all the AWD parts for cheaper than just buying an AWD vehicle. Let's also factor in time and know-how to actually accomplish the task.

Why dont subes have free-wheeling hubs
MorganM replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Because its way easier to just unhook an axle than it is to retrofit and adapt some lockout hubs. Also note what Calebz said; and that was an older KIA. The newer ones are so much better than the older ones. I test drove a 2000 Rio and said NO WAY. Two years later I test drove the 2002 and could tell it was SO much better; financed $8,000 and had me a brand new car -
procedure to replace O2 sensor?
MorganM replied to bgambino's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
22mm wrench or special socket; whatever you want. I prefer the socket since I can use my 18" breaker bar to make short work of the deal. Drop the Y pipe from the heads so you have plenty of room to swing tools. It's fairly straightforward. Remove, unplug, screw in new one, plug it in, fire it up! -
I certainly hope so!

Performance Radiator Hoses...
MorganM replied to mentis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Correct; it's not preformed. It comes off a huge spool in whatever length you specify. Copperpipe makes for good couplers and elbows. Large diameter hydrolic hose is another option for 'high performance' hoses. Northwet makes a valid point. Use it where you need it. -

Most concerning thing thus far is A) It over heats really fast You are loosing coolant.... where? :-\ C) QUIT OVER HEATING IT! -

Silicone. You can find them in bulk and veriable sizes at truck repair shops. By truck I mean semis and dump trucks.... the big guns! It was about $15/foot last time I priced it out. -

Paint it all to match! I think it looks so retarded when ppl have miss matched spoilers/hoods/trunk decks/ground effects. -
Offroad trail riding is my hobby I am most passionate about. Just so happens I like to do it in my Subaru Only time it gets hard to justify to my wife is when large amounts of money are involved. Thankfully my Subaru is just my ORV toy and I can 'put it on the shelf' so to speak when money is scarce. Buy things bit by bit untill I have what I need to make repairs or upgrade.

Max lift i've seen so far is what; 2" lift? What's the max tire size with a 2" lift? Dual range will help but you also need clearance. It's not that it wont ever do what an old EA could do; it's that they arent quite there yet. People are moving in the right direction and I hope we do see some EJ's doing some seriouse offroading that the EA's have traversed. I think any EJ series with a 4" lift, 29" tires, and a dual range tranny would equal an old EA series with the same equipment. Just that we havent seen any built like that yet and taken on really rough trails. Even with said equipment you'd have to be willing to 'roll with the punches' and take a lot of body damage; that's a tougher decision when it's a more expensive platform. I've looked under a lot of EJ series Subarus also. The control arms and other suspension parts that connect to the knuckles and such are not as beefy as old EA components. Even on the Forester the front control arms and such were way more beefed up than say an Impreza but the rear was not beefed up. Another concern to consider... are those components a liability? Only one way to find out

Of all the broke axle's I've seen it was internal failure inside the 'cups'. Either the C/V 'cage' giving way or the DOJ giving way inside the 'cup'. Don't see where you could weld in there to reinforce them.

I think you need to take a look at what kind of offroading you are going to do here. An Impreza can go 'offroad' but you wont see any on this trail: http://www.mnchopshop.org/images/offroad/jul04_craw4cure/morganm_rock_gorge_01.AVI http://www.mnchopshop.org/images/offroad/jul04_craw4cure/morganm_rock_gorge_02.AVI Really comes down to what you needs are for the trails you will be on.
